With the RNLI reaching a remarkable 200 year milestone this year, Cat Cubie shares some of Scotland’s stories from the RNLI’s ‘200 Voices’ archive. From the heroic to the heartwarming, the fun to the frightening, we’ll hear about volunteers from around Scotland’s coasts and the people (sometimes even the pets) they’ve saved.

Cat’s own memories of the RNLI go back to early childhood when she’d visit stations with her dad, who’s been involved in the RNLI for 55 years. She was always in awe of the crew and how much they’d risk keeping the seas safe.

Since it started, the RNLI has saved some 146,000 lives around the UK, nearly 12,000 in Scotland alone. At the heart of this second episode is the unfolding story of how Ben Thompson and his friend were rescued when a jet-ski trip nearly ended in tragedy. For former volunteer Dan Holland it’s the story of the emotional impact of realising you’ve saved someone’s life which stays with him while Vic Sutherland focuses on the lives lost from within the crews, in particular from Fraserburgh Lifeboat Station. Anne Scott and Doug Grant share how RNLI volunteering is woven through many volunteers’ family histories, decades of dedication to the cause, while for Rose Skelton being part of the RNLI family was so important to her, she ended up answering a shout on her wedding day.
