Queen’s student, Diana Culbertson, discusses her thesis on marching bands

Diana Culbertson is a Ballymoney student at Queen’s University - and her thesis is on the subject of Ulster’s marching band tradition.

She talks about her interest in the Lambeg Drum and how her PhD research led to her joining Dunloy Accordion Band. Diana thinks that marching bands are deeply misunderstood - and the ‘blood and thunder’ bands of old, are now more about musical finesse.

She describes her accordion and expresses her hope that her research will give people a greater insight into marching bands. (Broadcast: 5th Oct 2011)
