Green turtles time their egg-laying to coincide with one another. This means that when the young turtles hatch, the area is swamped with youngsters and the individual chances of survival are massively increased. Despite the fact the females are fully grown, they are not adapted for life on land, so must come ashore under the cover of night to avoid predators and they do this in vast numbers on Raine Island. This remote desert island is swamped by as many as 26,000 females on a single night, making it the largest green turtle breeding ground in the world.
