University students sign up to work with the Yi minority in the mountains (pt 3/4)

Although pupils show a thirst for knowledge, they receive little support from home. For their parents, these children could be of greater help to the family by saving on school fees and working the land. Although the Chinese government gives aid to these remote areas, it is clearly not enough and families lead a tough life, scraping together only enough to feed themselves. Quite how tough is something that the student teachers discover for themselves when they settle into their temporary home. There are no toilets, no entertainment and even the electricity supply is unreliable. But they have made a commitment to stick it out to the end and to do a good job.
