A journey with the fishermen of Mauritania

A story on Mauritania’s small-scale sustainable fishing operation and the men who sail the boats into dangerous Atlantic waters.

The fishermen of Mauritania are the country’s best kept secret – so much so that even many of their fellow citizens don’t even know they exist. But some of the richest fishing grounds in the world lie just off of the country’s Atlantic coast, and local fishermen have been working these waters for centuries.
Nowadays they face competition from modern trawlers from Europe, Russia and even China. The work is difficult and dangerous - whole boats are frequently lost at sea, and never seen again. But the fearless fishermen venture out to sea day and night in all kinds of weather. And our correspondent Chris Terrill went along for the ride.
