Mike Brearley: You have to admire Alistair Cook’s 'stubbornness'

The former England cricket captain Mike Brearley says the current England skipper was under intense pressure going into the current Ashes series against Australia and says his likely successor Joe Root should not be rushed into the job.

Mike Brearley was one of England’s greatest ever captains, famously leading England to Ashes success over Australia in 1981 when he could call on the talents of Sir Ian Botham and Bob Willis.

He says one of the difficulties today for England captains is they don’t get much chance to lead in county cricket before leading the international side and he fears the young star England batsman Joe Root could be ‘overburdened and overworried’ if he’s handed the England captaincy too soon.
