Five top tips on street photography

Improve your skills with American photojournalist Devin Allen.

Devin Allen, 29, was born and brought up in West Baltimore.

He gained worldwide attention when his Instagram photos of the Baltimore Uprising in April 2015 went viral, shared by Beyonce, Rihanna and Usher. One of his images was published on the cover of Time Magazine in May 2015 – only the third time the work of an amateur photographer had been showcased there.

His work has now been shown in exhibitions around the world, published as a book Beautiful Ghetto, and many of his photos are on display in the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC.

Now working in Baltimore as a professional photographer, Allen has turned his attention towards inspiring the inner city’s youth to take up cameras, not guns. He trains students on how to use photography to express themselves. Through crowdsourced fundraising, he provides students with cameras, runs photography workshops and organises exhibitions of the students’ work.
