Miguel Altunaga

Contemporary Mentor

Miguel Altunaga was born in Cuba and trained at the National School of Art, Havana. In 2007, after six years with the National Contemporary Dance Company of Cuba, he joined Rambert.

Miguel won the Cuban Best Male Solo Award in 2002 and in 2003 was chosen by Carlos Acosta to perform in ‘Tocororo’, which toured internationally from 2003 to 2007. At Rambert, Miguel has performed works by Gary Stewart, Christopher Bruce, Itzik Galili, Siobhan Davies, Doug Varone, Barak Marshall, Lucinda Childs, Alexander Whitley, Mark Baldwin, Shobana Jeyasingh and Merce Cunningham. Miguel has worked with many international choreographers including Joaquin Sabaté, Jan Linkens, Georges Céspedes, Julio Cesar Iglesias, Samir Akika, Steve Paxton and Exedia Dance Company (Greece). Miguel choreographed and appeared in Mikel Gurrea’s documentary ‘Txoria’ and the ballet film ‘Love Tomorrow’ (dir.Christopher Payne), winner of the Best UK Feature prize at the Raindance Film Festival 2012. In 2014 and 2016 he was nominated for Outstanding Male Performance by the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards.

As a choreographer, Miguel has created work for the National School of Ballet, Cuba, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba and for the bands Simply Red and The Zutons. He created ‘Memoria’ for Carlos Acosta at the London Coliseum and was commissioned to create ‘Derrumbe’ for Acosta’s Cubania evening at the Royal Opera House. He was commissioned by Kevin O’Hare, Director of the Royal Ballet, to create ‘Dark Eye’ for the Deloitte Ignite Festival 2014 (Royal Opera House). In 2016 he collaborated with the Tate Modern to create a work shown alongside the retrospective exhibition of Cuban artist, Wifredo Lam. He has also created five works for Rambert’s Evening of New Choreography and one of these pieces, ‘Don’t Think About It’, has joined Rambert’s repertoire.
