Long Susan Hart

Since we last met Long Susan, she has become a mother to Conor Judge, now almost two years old. But little Conor has had an unusual start in life, having never known anything other than the inside of Newgate Prison. Here he resides with Long Susan. A life of reasonable comfort in the Mothers and Infants Wing of London’s most notorious gaol.

But all this – as with everything else in Susan’s life – is about to come to a very final end. On her sentencing two and a half years ago, she took advantage of the article of English law that allows expectant mothers to ‘plead the belly’, thereby handing herself a stay of execution. But now there can be no further delay: Long Susan Hart will hang for her part in the deaths of the 55 souls who perished in the Leman Street locomotive disaster of 1894…
