M8 Bridge to Nowhere

2009 may see The Anderston Footbridge completed at last.

There are two unfinished structures over the M8 motorway in Glasgow. The Charing Cross podium was a ghost bridge for over two decades, due to Glasgow Corporation and some disagreement with the designs in the 60s and the inability to find a developer to take on the rest of the project. In the mid 90s Glasgow District Council found an interested party and a short time later an office block was built.

The Anderston footbridge was planned as the main pedestrian connection between Glasgow city centre and a large enclosed shopping centre in Anderston.  The shopping centre was never built and the end of the bridge was left 40 feet above a car park.

Sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, started a scheme in 2007 to raise funds to complete the Anderston footbridge called Connect2.  In May 2008 Sustrans and the Big Lottery Fund signed a contract to receive funding of £50 million to complete a number of footways and cycle routes nationwide including the M8 Bridge to Nowhere.
