Knoydart Again

I had been to Knoydart in May for a few days so it seemed like a good idea to have another look - the forecast wasnt great but I needed to get out and get some exercise so I headed off last weekend.

Even managed to combine the trip with some IT work in Ardnamurchan!

The weather was actually remarkably dry in as much as it didnt rain a great deal. However the ground underfoot is pretty soggy. On the Monday as I was leaving the weather improved dramatically and it seems to be set like this for the rest of the week. How's that for timing eh?

Managed a few pics on the way back which you can see below

A typical Knoydart river after heavy rain!

Sgurr Coire Choinnichean - a very fine peak that rises above Inverie

Geology time: a glacial erratic boulder of gneiss (probably Lewisian ie extremely old) sitting on Moine schists and psammites (very old)

More geology: a rather fine quartz vein running through the schists - that's Inverie in the distance

A sunny Monday, looking across the bay

Another view across the bay

On the way back from Mallaig I managed to get some nice pics of various beaches:

The sands at Morar - remember "Local Hero"?

Beach near Arisaig

Same beach from another viewpoint

Looking out to sea

Finally, not far from Mull, here is Camus nan Geall in Ardnamurchan - a really nice spot.

And now a week of great weather beckons. Think the camera might be busy...

Bye for now!

BEAUTIFUL photos----i have lovely memories of these places(i think i said that to you in a blog already)its when i see photos of places i used to visit a lot when younger i get really homesick--whats it going to be like living in allblackland??-great as i've said placed on the "corromandel" resemble the north west coast of scotland so i'll be okay(i think!)

carol (the french connection) from feeling nostalgique

These are great photos as ever, MM, and in this case I actually know the area. I couldn't believe the Caribbean colours of those beaches when I first saw them! Did you go to Inverie on the mail boat? I believe Cameron Mackintosh has a fairly spectacular house somewhere round there. Thanks again MM!

I remember being astonished at the white sands and azure-blue sea on a train ride to Mallaig in 1952. I was back in Mallaig this summer and photographs from 1954 showed what seem nowadays to be a pretty primitive sort of settlement. How our perspectives change! Barney from Swithiod remembering the stone age

Sgurr Coire Choinnichean is reminiscent of a painting Sunny-of-fond-memory did on Arran - it hardly seems photographic, with all those subtle colours and the touchable texture of the rocks...and the one rusty rock in the foreground taking the eye to the autumn bracken on the lower slopes.

Flying Cat from an admiring glance...as ever

FC, I think I know the Sunny pic you mean. That pic of mine does look a bit like the view towards Cir Mhor in Arran. Cir Mhor is more "pointy" however. Mind you there is a SERIOUSLY pointy hill near Knoydart called Sgurr na Ciche (pronounced Skoor na Kee-che , ch as in loch) One of the finest hills in Scotland. Scotlands Matterhorn? Some would say so. Maybe, or perhaps Sgor Iutharn (AKA Lancet Edge) near Ben Alder gets the prize? Go on, get googling, you know you want to.... :-)

MM from Mull

Shucks, MM, too bad I don't live in your area. You would make a wonderful guide. Great blog.

Thank you MM...Having the curiosity of a feline, I did as you suggested...:-o. Shocked!!! That you should treat an innocent pussy to such titillation!

Flying Cat from feeling braaly

That's an open goal, EffCee, and you KNOW it!

Barney from Swithiod save us from ...

You didn't meet 7 men digging claims on an English brewer's land by any chance?

Hyper-Borean from The folk club

You are up to something, Hyper-B. I can smell it, but somehow I can't put my finger on the source. Come on: out with it!!

mjc from IN, USA

Do Canadians not do punctuation?

Flying Cat from red pen in paw

Who "does" punctuation? It is a tool and we use tools.. educated feline, your frasing is usually more felicitous.

Barney from Swithiod, eh?

I am a colloquial cat...

Flying Cat from a large colon

I tried to answer your question mjc, I did! I wasn't controversial, I didn't advertise, I used temperate language and still the infernal machine rejected me. Anyway; I suggested you enter the name,"Hamish Henderson," in a well known search engine, the one with an OO in it and wished you enjoyment in your research. I hope this comment meets with the approval of the filter.

Hyper-Borean from The dustbin of history

Down Wiv Spam Fritters!!! Let's organise a virtual IB Protest March. You know it makes sense. Which would be a first...

Flying Cat from Freedom Come All Ye

Just googled Hamish Henderson, as you suggested, Hyper-B. Very interesting articles. I did not know about him. Will have to check the Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica.

mjc from IN, USA

"frasing," Barney? You really should not rely on spell checkers. Whatever happened to the third grade dictionary I gave you on your twelfth birthday? Maybe I did not give it to you after all: I probably needed it more than you did.

mjc from IN, USA

Oh he's a one that Barney...

Flying Cat from a hard stare

My withering reply to mjc got withered itself. Frasing was supposed to be symmetrical with pheline and phelicitous, that's the short and the long of it.

Barney from Swithiod SF

Phased/fazed you out, Barney. QED and OED to you, old boy. # I don't know about you all, but some of us here are sharpening our knives and drooling at the voting to come. Lemme at 'em. No mountainman, stoning would be too quick for that lot.

mjc from IN, USA

We here in Over-the-Pond-Land are watching with baited breath. Such a hard call for some..."do I vote on grounds of race(ism) or s*x(ism)?" Or policies...

Flying Cat from all agog
