INTERESTED IN COLONSAY?

Hello there,
I visited your island last year July 21th, when I was sailing on a Danish Schooner. The ship sailed again the next day, but I managed to walk along the road around the island. A very nice walk on a pretty island. It took more than the 1.5 hour I had expected though, so I was happy to get a lift by a man in a car the last bit of way, as my ship was ready to leave. I just happened to come across your blog, and I like the Scottish people and nature very much, so I thought you should hear this little story from someone like me "out there". Cheers Kim

I came to Colonsay last year and walked over to Oronsay, very beautiful. You need to get your ferries sorted out though!

It is my intent to "come home" to Colonsay in June, 2006. The 主播大秀's efforts to initiate Island Blogging was defined in my review of "The Corncrake." I am a novice at blogging, but I am willing try my hand in providing a "Colonial's Aspect" of return to his ancestral homeland. As a Texan, I have served my nation ministerially, an elected official, and as a combat Marine. Perhaps my experience ,as a displaced Islander could benefit the effort. I was in Colonsay only a couple of months back, well, I was actually staying on Oronsay. Me and a friend volunteered for the RSPB for 2 weeks and had an absolutely brilliant time. We loved the peacefulness and both found it really hard to settle back into the hustle and bustle of life back in Cardiff. What really made our experience special were the people - when we unexpectedly had to stay a couple of extra nights on Colonsay we were blown over by people's concern at helping us find somewhere to stay. Definitely memories we'll never forget.

My maternal ancestors were MacNeils, thus I have developed an interest in Barra and Colonsay. I would love to visit one day, see the castle, catch the trout, etc. Tell me anything that you can about this mystical place that haunts my gene pool.

My wife and I visited Colonsay back in 84 and stayed at the Hotel where we rented bikes for the day. We were about half way around the Island and got off the bikes to push them up a hill. A couple of minutes later a local man in his 60's rode past us pedaling up hill and said as he past "Bikes are for riding not for pushing". They just don't make them that tough any more. We visited friends of ours Andrew and Flora MacNeil before he passed away some years later. Had a wonderfull time and would recomend it to anyone.

I have read and studied maps of Colonsay and Oransay and visited many of the other islands but yet to make it to Colonsay. It is still an ambition to get there one day!

wow - you knew / know Andrew and Flora ? I spent most summers when I was young (Seventies) on Oronsay, and memories of it will last the rest of my life. Andrew and Flora were farming it at the time and we spent loads of time with them. Oronsay is a magical place, still unspoilt as far as I can see - those guys who did RSPB volunteering were very lucky !

Colonsay and Oronsay are the most marvellous islands, quite unlike others in the Inner Hebrides We are visiting the island in July 12-19 studying its geology with two professionals. The islands are not on the normal Scottish geo-tourism circuit so it will be fun watching the two pros try to sort out what they are seeing since neither have been to the islands before.

Working on a series for television which includes Colonsay! Of all the islands I have visited while filming the view from 'Beinn nan Gudairean', was well worth the climb. Certainly my favourite view in the British Isles to date. Kiloran Bay probably the best beach too!

My wife and I have very fond memories of Colonsay, as we spent our honeymoon there in 1987. Since then, we have moved to the other side of the globe, but we will return one day... I would be very interested to know of the TV series mentioned above; maybe it will make it to South African TV?

Although I've never actually visited Colonsay, I have made regular trips to Oban and some of the inner Hebridean Islands. I am very interested in finding out how I can make a life on such an Island, what work is available (Iam a teacher) and if there are any grants to help with moving, or setting up a business etc.
