Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
Hope you enjoyed your freebie at Upton Park - sir. Do you like to be called 鈥渟ir鈥, sir? I don鈥檛. Don鈥檛 like Chief Inspector or even Mister. I like it when people call me 鈥淛immy鈥 or 鈥淛imbo鈥 or 鈥淧encil Neck鈥 or 鈥淔our Eyes鈥. Why? Because it means they are under-estimating me. And that is when I am at my most effective. My most powerful.
Forgive the melodramatics. I blame my father. Such a sucker for the theatrical flourish.
But I am in a fine old mood today sir, as I type this in the dawn light on my trust Imperial. After today there will be no Gene Hunt and no Fenchurch CID. It鈥檚 over. I have achieved everything I set out to do.
The scales will fall from their eyes and they will see.
I have taken ownership of a Sony Betamax video recorder. My instrument of enlightenment. There I go again with those theatricals.
As for my report on DCI Hunt - it is finished. I must say, it makes for fascinating reading. Fascinating.
鈥淎nd you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free.鈥
John Chapter 8, verse 32. I believe. I know my Bible. Must know almost every verse.
The birds are singing. The day is upon us.
Time to go to work.
Sincerely,
Pencil Neck Jim

Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
Firstly, many thanks for the flowers and message of condolence and support on the tragic death of Sergeant Viv James - a victim of the incendiary riots carried out in HM Prison Fenchurch last week.
Although we must remind ourselves that James was a criminal, knowingly abetting the rioters in order to secure the release of his cousin.
Why would such an exemplary officer resort to such selfish, reckless criminality? Two words sir - Gene Hunt.
It is Hunt鈥檚 abandon, his 鈥渙ne rule for us and one rule for them鈥 philosophy that infects and inspires other officers to break the rules in two. James paid for this cataclysmic lapse of judgement with his life. Not to mention (and just as important) the horrendous bill of damage to government property and cost of riot-control now to be footed by the tax-payer. I despair sir!
This riot was on the cards a long time. I knew of the growing power of inmate Jason Sacks. I knew that a confrontation between HM Prison Fenchurch and the police was building. And I sadly knew (despite my best efforts to prevent it) that DCI Hunt would wedge himself in the middle of the fray. Fanning flames and burning others.
Yet again a situation ended with myself cradling a dying officer. Viv James died peacefully in my arms as I tried in vain to save him. Despite his grave betrayal, he was much admired and much loved. Clearly his death has struck cold steel into the hearts of his colleagues.
I believe this will make it much easier for me to reveal the truth about Hunt to Fenchurch CID.
As they say, easier to cook a steak after it has been tenderized. CID have been 鈥減ummelled with the steak-hammer鈥 this week. Even DI Alex Drake has lost the stomach to defend Hunt. She claims to have uncovered something in Hunt鈥檚 personal artefacts - the breakthrough to the truth about Sam Tyler. I am buzzing with expectation, sir! The end of all this is in sight!
May I also congratulate you on the occasion of your 52nd birthday. I have enclosed 2 tickets to Upton Park. I know you are a West Ham fan. Oh yes Nick, my spies are everywhere - ha ha. It was quite fortuitous how they came into my possession and not being much of a football fan, I am delighted to see them go to a good home.
鈥淚鈥檓 forever blowing bubbles ..鈥
Sincerely,
Jim

Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
As you are already aware, I have placed DCI Litton in custody for what must rather depressingly be described as a string of mistakes and cover-ups.
It gives me no satisfaction whatsoever to see a senior officer with 20 years under his belt, carted off like a common thief. Litton鈥檚 track-record and success in high-profile investigations does I hope give him something 鈥渋n the bank鈥 to trade off. One suspects the man will avoid the ignominy of a full punitive hearing but I am advising my opposite number in Manchester, DCI Cross to have him pensioned off with the minimum of fuss. Still a relatively young man, DCI Litton will undoubtedly gain employment in high street security or some such.
First he must pull himself together - I am told that he has made a 鈥渉alf-hearted stab at taking his own life鈥. I mention this to highlight our need to provide emotional as well as legal advice to officers undergoing disciplinary procedures. I must counter this sir by saying that I have no such concerns for DCI Hunt. Again, his ham-fisted bull-at-gate style threatened to destabilize a police investigation. His shooting and injuring of DI Bevan (as you are aware) was proven justified. His crouching down and gloating over the fallen man was not. I don鈥檛 know what DCI Hunt said to him but Bevan was in considerable distress for the rest of the night!
Interesting to note that I discovered the burnt remains of a leather jacket in an oil drum behind Fenchurch station. Did this jacket belong to DI Sam Tyler? I suspect so. Hunt鈥檚 arrogance is now such that he is prepared to destroy evidence on his own turf, under my very nose!
Let him think he is burning away his tracks. For he is not. Pride comes before a fall. And fall he will. So very, very far. I can not say what is 鈥渁round the corner鈥 for Hunt but wheels are in motion, set spinning by myself. And next week a very big wheel will be rolling over Gene Hunt.
Sincerely,
Jim

Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
As I am sure you are aware, it is my sad duty to report the loss of a senior female officer in the field. DS Louise Gardiner was posted undercover by DCI Wilson of Hanfield CID. She was assigned the task of assembling inside information on the Stafford criminal empire.
But this 鈥渓oss鈥 of DS Gardiner did not occur at the moment of her death, mown down by a transit van driven by Daniel Stafford. It occurred the moment she decided to take the 鈥渢hirty pieces of silver鈥 offered her by kingpin Terry Stafford. She was seduced by the very criminal lifestyle she had been charged to destroy.
I was with Louise when she expired. I was holding her in my hands Nick. Despite her grievous betrayal of the Force, I could not help but be moved as she lay in my arms fighting for life. I believe that just before she died (forgive my hubris) I helped her find some peace of spirit.
But this incident only goes to show how any good officer can be turned to the easy path of corruption and deceit. No one can be exempt from suspicion in this situation. DI Drake may be my grudging ally for now but at any moment she may be persuaded by DCI Hunt to turn against me.
I pray that day never comes Nick. I would hate to find myself cradling DI Drake in my arms the way I cradled Louise.
Sincerely,
Jim

Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
I have, as you know, concluded my initial investigation into the shooting of DI Alex Drake by DCI Gene Hunt. I have conducted and concluded preliminary interviews with other senior officers within Fenchurch East CID. My Stage 1 Report is being typed as you read this and a Xerox will be presented to you within the week.
I have, as discussed on the phone last week, announced my intention to remain ensconced within Fenchurch East CID for the foreseeable future, better to be able to monitor malpractice and the misappropriation of Codes of Policing.
This of course is, to a large extent, a decoy in order to penetrate the smoke-screen that DCI Hunt has thrown up. I will continue to pursue my secret enquiry into the disappearance and possible murder of DI Samuel Tyler by DCI Hunt in 1980.
I am delighted that my time and effort spent 鈥渃onnecting鈥 with DI Drake has started to pay off. She has begun her own ad hoc investigation into the 鈥淪am Tyler Mystery鈥. She may cover a lot of ground on my behalf as DCI Hunt undoubtedly has strong feelings for her. Feelings which are blinding him and making it easier to investigate him expediently.
Interesting to note that DI Raymond Carling has exhibited deep dissatisfaction with his commanding officer鈥檚 hypocrisies and bullying, self-serving nature. Carling is a blunt tool but an effective one. He sees himself as officer rank but that only serves to make him more effective 鈥渃annon fodder鈥. I may yet have further use for him as I suspect he is only a hair鈥檚 breadth away from betraying his precious 鈥淕uv鈥.
Sincerely,
Jim

Re: Fenchurch East CID
Nick,
Following the shooting of Detective Inspector Alex Drake by Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt during the 鈥淒ouglas Lane Robbery鈥 and DCI Hunt鈥檚 subsequent abscondence to Spain, I am delighted to inform you that I am now fully located within Fenchurch East CID and am deep into an investigation of the malpractices of their Criminal Investigation Department.
DI Drake herself appears to have absolved DCI Hunt of all blame with regards to him shooting her. There is undoubtedly a chemistry and trust between them but I think he has her under some kind of professional/emotional 鈥渢hrall鈥 - if I may be so melodramatic. It has been impossible for me to conduct an aggressive investigation against DCI Hunt without DI Drake鈥檚 corroboration.
I have secured interviews with Detective Constable Christopher Daniel Skelton and newly appointed Detective Inspector Raymond Milton Carling. Both officers seem clear as to where their loyalties lie - ie; with DCI Hunt. But I have also taken note of a subtle veil of silence and disinformation being drawn to confuse me.
Nick, there is a much deeper concern here. As you are aware, I believe that DCI Hunt had a crucial role to play in the sudden disappearance of Detective Inspector Samuel Tyler from Greater Manchester Police in 1980. I now believe that I am not alone in harbouring these fears. DI Drake has doubts also. I have made contact with her on this matter. She is understandably reticent to discuss it but I have hopes that she will prove a very useful ally in the weeks to come.
Sincerely,
Jim
