Elliot Minor Q & A

In advance of them showcasing their evil wares this week at the Limelight, Belfast, we cornered rockers to tackle a series of cunning yet frivilous questions before brazenly stealing an acoustic version of 'Solaris' out of their backpack to give to you (gratis, naturally) while their backs were turned. Honestly, you just can't trust us for a second.

So it's here - that time of year when we put together a few lists. I've just completed my top twenty Irish albums of the year for Magazine's poll (still time to vote yourself - email a list to chris@iheartau.com before 5pm today - Monday) and will now consider the albums stuck in my car stereo or the singles I've had soundtrack dinner making in the kitchen (no idea why I always round up my favourite new songs any time I make a feed, but there you go) during the past twelve months.

Andrew (Griswold) Johnston is somewhat of a legend in Northern Irish music. As part of he's gone through 40 band members, played over 800 gigs and some of the biggest dives around Europe. There's been punch ups, a van crash, arrests, sleeping rough, muggings by strippers, and of course, full on rock 'n' roll shows.

Chattering Classes #3 - Not Squares

Post categories:

ATL | 15:03 UK time, Tuesday, 3 November 2009

" are three people from Belfast who combine language, sound and non-habitual movement in order to dance, shout and sing with you."

That's how they put it. Anybody who has 'taken part' in a Not Squares party will understand that they induce involuntary movements and sweaty dance floors via electro-thrash sounds.

notsquares.jpgThe three-piece, comprising of Michael Kinloch, Keith Winter (both previously known from ) and Ricki O'Rawe (ex- / ), have been working hard the last couple of months: Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio 1 Session at the legendary Maida Vale studio, Reading, Leeds and Latitude festivals and they're slap bang in the middle of making their debut album.

So ATL decided to catch up with them and give them 15 minutes to tell us all before their gig at Radar in Queens this Thursday.

14:04 - Rigsy: You ready to be interviewed to within an inch of your life?

14:04 - Ricki: I am but I warn you that I may only have an inch left so be careful

14:04 - Rigsy: Oh dear, are you delicate today?

14:04 -  Ricki: Pressure - don't talk to me about PRESSURE ;-)

14:05 - Rigsy: Where are you, what can you see around you?

14:06 - Ricki: I am in a shared office in Queen's - my good friend Tara is opposite me reading some scary jesuit text and I am surrounded by books on new age mysticism. Yep - my life.

14:06 - Rigsy: Inspirational. Ha. Right, well before we talk about yr gig this week, you guys have had a pretty crazy summer... some highlights please!

14:07 - Ricki: Summer... where to begin... Well I would have to say Maida Vale - fulfilling a boyhood dream (three boys doing so)

14:08 - Rigsy: I know, thats amazing! The bands who've been in there, like :-o

14:08 - Ricki: Reading was amazing - just getting so much back from a crowd who barely knew us. Also a gig in Edinburgh at Cab Vol in July was special as it was amidst a crazy week that began with Latitude and ended with us being invited to do that session.

14:09 - Rigsy: Wow. People who hear just snippets of not squares... or other people talking about you may (wrongly) think it's not hugely accessible or too arty or intense... So, to put that right... what's fun about not squares live?

14:11 - Ricki: haha i quite like those misunderstandings. I think we have just been about enjoying ourselves to the utmost and giving anything a go from the beginning. It has turned out to be quite catchy as we wanted to explore the engaging parts of the music and ethos we discovered in the music we have taken part in the past.

14:14 - Rigsy: ha ha, you see, statements like that!!!! ;-) I think if people go see you live they are guaranteed to be blown away

14:14 - Ricki: art and intensity is a bit of a bad word these days i suppose. I
 am glad you think so

14:14 - Rigsy: for the simple reason, you HAVE to dance

14:15 - Ricki: we WANT to dance!

14:15 - Rigsy: Even if on record, or even just the concept of you guys isn't, you know 'what you're into usually'... when you see it in front of you, it totally gets you. With that in mind do you see a connection to ASIWYFA?

14:16 - Ricki: Hmm Good question ... i didn't expect that!

14:17 - Rigsy: you didn't expect a good question?! :-o

14:17 - Ricki: that inch is decreasing...

14:17 - Rigsy: ha

14:18 - Ricki: ASIWYFA come from the same stock as us - we are both bands who like to meet people, engage them. They like to get everyone stirred up in solidarity, so do we...

14:19 - Rigsy: right well this was supposed to be 15 minutes, so tell me (and anyone reading) why they need to be at the speakeasy on Thursday night.

14:19 - Ricki: Well I think both Enemies and Cap Pas Cap are bands that ought to be caught (you should name a feature that)

14:20 - Rigsy: very nice! gunna steal that ;-) And not squares?

14:21 - Ricki: we are also going to play a new song called Release the Bees which we are quite excited about - expect sweat and dance

14:21 - Rigsy: awesome! Well look, please GOD keep doing what you do cause it's so much fun playing yr stuff on the radio :-) And thanks for the download. Enjoy thursday man. Our time is up!!
