Silhouette - Volume Destroyed

ATL | 17:08 UK time, Monday, 31 May 2010

is the brain child of none other than stalwart of the local music scene, Shauna Tohill. It's hard to believe she's still only twenty two having already featured in Angelfall and Poet's Pocket Symphony.

Her new single, Volume Destroyed, has just been released and we think it's a cracker. Add to that another great (and fun) video by Darren Lee (, ), and you've got winner!

Indie Disco Anthems

Post categories:

ATL | 14:54 UK time, Monday, 24 May 2010

Is there any time better than that period in your life when you discover that not only do other human beings listen to music akin to your tastes, but they also celebrate this in the form of interpretive dance in clubs? Ah, the indie disco, now immortalised in song by Neil Hannon who happens to be one of our ATL session guests this week. In honour of Divine Comedy's latest we sent the office round robin email to illicit the definitive ATL end of the night anthems. Get involved and shout us here, or and we will give y'all a shout on the show tonight.

Amy's Fresh Meet: Tame Impala

Post categories: ,Ìý

Amy McGarrigle | 16:19 UK time, Friday, 21 May 2010

Meet , the perfect accompaniment for these (numbered) sunny days! Aussies as a nation love their rock, and these Perth-ians specifically like to do their rocking neck deep in psychedelic grooves. There's a large dose of The Beatles via Cream and a twist into modern psychedelic like Manitoba era Caribou.

Chattering Classes #14 - Kasper Rosa

Rigsy | 15:26 UK time, Thursday, 20 May 2010

kasper_rosa.jpgGreat new acts are finding their way onto the ATL playlist at an almost alarming rate these days. The latest demanding airplay are Kasper Rosa, an instrumental four-piece with an impressive work ethic. Ryan from the band spoke to our Rigsy during half time in Hull v Liverpool...

7.58pm Rigsy says: well sir, what you up to, what can you see around you right.... NOW

7.58pm Ryan says: Getting stuck in to six cans of [a popular supermarkets] finest premium lager and half way through a game against Hull (as Liverpool) in Fifa. And listening to .

Best Metal Song

Post categories:

ATL | 16:48 UK time, Monday, 17 May 2010

So at this stage, most will have heard the sad news that metal legend Ronnie James Dio has died. The devil horn pioneer had one of the best voices ever to grace rock and fronted Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and of course Dio, during his lifetime.

So in tribute to the master, ATL is turning its attention to metal this evening for the SuggestiON-AIR feature. We've had strange looks in the office as we've whacked up the volume to play our favourite metal moments, and air guitared our way into, well, ridiculous postures. The teams picks are below. What's yours?

Best Comedy Songs

Post categories:

ATL | 16:13 UK time, Monday, 10 May 2010

SuggestiON-AIRA decent marriage of music and comedy is a total rarity and a real treat. Bad comedy songs can make you cringe inside out, but when it's done right - well what could be better than the two best things about life - music and laughing - in perfect harmony? On Thursday, Rigsy nearly ended himself laughing at a shambolic Flight of the Conchords set in Dublin. Using that as an excuse, tonight we want to know about the funniest piece of music you've ever heard - be it a comedy act one of your favourite bands just having a bit of a laugh.

Rigsy Gives Off - Dublin Gigs

Post categories:

Rigsy | 11:56 UK time, Friday, 7 May 2010

Map of Ireland, with added badly drawn arrows to Dublin (ish) and a question mark beside BelfastBig week for me, I'm buzzing like a maniac. On Tuesday, myself, Warren and Amy from ATL carpooled down to Dublin and watched a pretty special Pavement reunion show. Tonight I'm for via a trip on the Enterprise.

Amongst the hype and excitement there will be a little complaining. Inevitable really, I'm from after all. But this is something that comes up over and over again. Why did I have to travel to Dublin in the first place? Why do some of you guys reading have to do the same to see and next month?

Pavement - Tripod, Dublin

Post categories: ,Ìý

ATL | 11:33 UK time, Wednesday, 5 May 2010

The first thing we hear from Pavement in Dublin is a bum note and a false start. Although deliberate, it's a good indication of what follows - an occasionally shambolic gig, full of scrappy versions of songs, some of which haven't aged particularly well. Songs performed by a band of men on the, ahem, "wrong" side of forty, fronted by a singer who looks so disinterested it's as if he's in detention, doing his best to get through it and back to doing something he might actually enjoy.

The Golden Age of Video

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

Amy McGarrigle | 15:21 UK time, Tuesday, 4 May 2010

Growing up without MTV,Ìýmusic videos were largely absent apart from dodgy multi-media CDs, badly streamed web views, or /2TV/. However, once Youtube arrived (and yes there was a time before youtube... only 5 years ago to be exact!), the DIY music video was truly born.

From then on, you didn't need to have a big label behind you to warrant a music video. Anybody could upload material, prompting low budget visuals for dodgy and great bands alike. Many alternated between unimaginative documentary style videos on the road or in the studio, or badly synced grainy live footage. They still possessed a certain charm, but there wasn't really great artistic substance to them, other than providing a slide show for the song. Some tried to work with a narrative, but they often just looked like cheap school projects shot on their parents' camcorder.

IMRO vs Blogs

Post categories:

ATL | 13:28 UK time, Tuesday, 4 May 2010

IMRO.jpgIf you follow any of the southern music blogs, you won't have missed the rather controversial move by (Irish Music Rights Organisation) to make music bloggers (those hosting mp3s) cough up for hosting, streaming or linking to mp3s - regardless of whether the blog earns money or not. This fee would be charged on behalf of any band registered with IMRO, even if that band gave an MP3 to a blog for promotional use.
