Chattering Classes #32 - Screendeath
Our first online chat of the new year sees a fresh faced star of the electro scene go head to head with Rigsy. Screendeath (aka Ryan Thompson from Donaghadee) had a remarkable end to 2010, with the likes of Annie Mac, Diplo, Erol Alkan, DJ Zinc and Fake Blood (basically a selection of the biggest electro DJs on the planet) playing out his track 'Packback'. The 19 year old's debut single was released by Southern Fried, a label run by the one and only Fatboy Slim. Screendeath took Rigsy by surprise, as you can see....
(Please note, as always, mistakes and dodgy grammar are authors own!)

Ryan says: hiiiiii
I'm about now if you want!
Rigsy says: LETS DO IT. spontaneous interviews FTW . i don't have any questions so you'll have to think of some yourself
Ryan says: i probably don't have any answers then
Rigsy says: WHATS YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES?!
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NAME FROM?!
Ryan says: hahahaha ... Err. influences are probably the likes ofÌýDJ Zinc's whole crack house thinggg and all that kinda sleazy stuff and theÌýGTA san andreas soundtrack - its sick
Rigsy says: ha ha, great stuff
Ryan says: as for the name - not a clue!
was gonna use ryan thompson but then there's your man in derrry so amalgamated two words and that's what happened although youtube says its some mad brain decomposition caused by watching tv TINFOIL HATS GO!
Rigsy says: speaking of zinc, he's one of a scandalously impressive list of DJs who's played out Packback. You were there when Fake Blood played it, IÌýknow Annie Mac, Diplo, Erol Alkan has played it out - you witnessed any of those?
Ryan says: nah man literally missed everything. Saw Foamo play it out which was ace but apart from that i managed to miss all the biggies bar fakey b either way im over the moon!
Rigsy says: have you spoke to any of these DJs? do they be in touch?
Ryan says: ha not excessively, I've chatted to Foamo and Fake Blood a few times but it's been relatively anonymous Not intentionally, THATS JUST WHATS HAPPENED ph god, caps lock my bad
Rigsy says: are they surprised/annoyed when they see how young you are?
(cause i know i was)
Ryan says: hahaha I don't know, there's younger about now!
sure Mele's about 6 months younger and already more or less one of the biggest names in the uk funky/future-bass-garage-2step/ whatever you call it scene
Rigsy says: do you feel under any pressure?
what with your first release being such a whopper and doing so well
Ryan says: yeah a bit, scaredÌýI won't be able to make something to a high enough level so been going hell for leather on quality control! ha still scared that southern fried are interested in putting things out!
Rigsy says: where did you make packback?
without being too nerdy (Cause i'll just get lost) talk us through it
Ryan says: Hahaha
errr made it down here in donaghadee on my good old 5 year old laptop! Just did the wee riff by coincidence smashing on a keyboard then built the rest of it around that. Itried it with a violin at first but it sounded... odd very very odd
Rigsy says: that woulda sounded a bit like Galvanize so obviously yr classically trained and all of that then?
Ryan says: ayeee, been playing violin since p2 or p3 which has helped massively in doing all the melody stuff, now pretty glad the parents through me onto it!
Rigsy says: absolutely. it comes across
also, and don't take this the wrong way....but you don't seem the most business minded person
Ryan says: hahaha very true
Rigsy says: you're still pretty wide eyed about it all, which is cool are you gonna get a manager or something to do your dirty work?
Ryan says: hahaha
I've got a manager who's been doing all the things in terms of dealing with label talk, remixes, gigs etc. which is definitely for the best as I'm utterly useless when it comes to keeping on top of what i'm meant to be at and discussing things ha definitely been a great help as it means i just have to concentrate on the tunes!
Rigsy says: well, if everything goes to plan, how will 2011 pan out for you?
Ryan says: man
hard to call, I guess i want to get a few more EPs out this year, gigs still and i guess just having fun (clicheeeee) remixes for sure, it's something i haven't really done much of outside of a few!
Rigsy says: right well, we'll see you down at SK [Stiff Kitten]Ìýfor SMD
our time is up, we love the tunes man, keep 'em coming
Ryan says: haha no sweat. i'll catch ye there!
thankssss, cheers for the interviewww
