SuggestiON-AIR: Songs About being Dumped....

Post categories:

ATL | 22:37 UK time, Sunday, 9 January 2011

Unless you've been living under a rock, you're bound to have notice some 'scandal' in the world of football in the last few days. In a nut shell, Liverpool Football Club dumped their manager Roy Hodgson for their old 'sweetheart', Kenny Dalglish. Seeing ATL's super producer (Paul McClean) has had a pretty miserable time of late as a Liverpool fan, we thought we'd honour that by using Liverpool's new found hope as our SuggestiON-AIR topic. Only it's really more about Hodgson's demise...

Anyway, it a fairly tangential connection but we're looking for the best songs about being dumped! Let us know your pick by shouting us here, onÌýthe ´Ç°ùÌý and we will give y'all a shout on the show tonight...

Well, all of the 'Ladies & Gentlemen we are Floating in Space' album, really. As if one beautifully upsetting song wasn't enough, you get a whole album's worth of pain. And what makes it even closer to the bone is a notably poignant backstory. Spiritualized is one Jason Pierce who, in 1996, was in a relationship with Kate Radley, a member of his band. During the recording of this album their relationship apparently broke down, with Kate marrying one Richard Ashcroft a few years later. Regardless of the supposed circumstances, it's the ultimate break-up album, made to be listened to alone, in the dark. Oh, and it would help if you're already in tears.

Steven Rainey - ATL Buddy
In the history of popular song, perhaps no-one has been a more accurate chronicler of heartbreak than Mr Declan McManus, or Elvis Costello to his fans. In a 30 year career which has perhaps focused on heartbreak more than any other subject, this track from 1986's Blood and Chocolate album finds the bard issuing a withering character assassination of an ex lover who has rejected him for someone else.

It's bitter, it's petty, and - in these hands - a thrillingly visceral ride through the funfair of pain. "If I knew then what I knew now, I'd have never loved you anyhow....and I hope you're happy now."

Nuff said.

Amy McGarrigle - ATL Content Assistant

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Isley Brothers, Creedance Clearwater Revival, (check it out!) and so many more have recorded this song, but in truth it belongs to Marvin Gaye and his tortured voice.ÌýIt's an age old story of a Ìýman discovering his girl is cheating on him and fearing the end.The lyrics are simple. "If it's true please tell me dear, Do you plan to let me go, For the other guy you loved before?". It's an oldie but a goodie. A universal fear put simpl. And sure, it's a motown classic.

Paul McClean - ATL Producer

From the magnificent Late Night Final album, this track is actually deceptively melodic for a song of quiet desperation. In fact the entire album is full of a very northern romantic yearning. Lyrically Hawley is scratching at wounds, but musically it's understated but transcendent, just what the heartbreak doctor ordered.

Bob Dylan - Dont Think Twice It's Alright
Philip Taggart - ATL Buddy

When love takes a trip to the toilet it's quite normal for me to grab a copy of High Fidelity, a duvet, a bottle of whiskey and all my Smiths records and make a fort in my room for a week. This all changed with Bob Dylan's 'Dont Think Twice It's Alright' from the 1962 classic 'Freewheelin'. This is a track that Dylan described as 'a statement that maybe you can say to make yourself feel better... as if you were talking to yourself.' You know what? It totally works, it might well you up more than a little girl with a scraped knee but it does set you into a passionately stubborn and positive trail of thought.
