Oxegen 2011 - Deadmau5
Vodaphone Stage, Saturday, 11.10pm
Describe in a Tweet: The reward is some incredibly good looking cheese.
What happened: Like Swedish House Mafia 24 hours previous, Deadmau5 is under pressure to deliver a show. From the second we see our Canadian chum in a ghost costume, flanked by Deadmau5 does Marioworld on his visual cube, we know we're in for a treat. Visually, at least - the first half hour of music is a little stale, as Mr. Zimmerman delivers the more miniminal of his releases while road testing some ideas. It's a fair enough deal - the stage looks incredible, with that famous mau5-head working alongside the cube and a bank of screens for something of a visual orgy... so, we happily tolerate the less poppy moments of his output.
Crazy In Love: Then we get the hits. 'Sofi Needs a Ladder' (complete with vocalist) is so much fun even Deadmau5 himself has a wee dance, leaving his cube to bound about the stage. All the while, those visuals... a proper spectacle.
Why Don't You Love Me: 'I Remember' and 'Ghosts and Stuff' follow soon enough and while they keep a decent gathering bouncing, it's strange to hear them 'performed' tonight so straight - as if direct from CD. A little reworking would have been nice.
Oxegen rating: 9/10 for what we saw, 6/10 for what we heard.
