Oxegen 2011 - Plan B

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

ATL | 16:12 UK time, Sunday, 10 July 2011

Main Stage, Saturday, 6.25pm

Describe in a Tweet: Rock, pop, rap, dubstep, soul, nu metal, funk....

What happened: This reviewer makes their way through the growing festival crowd to the sound of the brass refrain from Plan B's 'She Said'. We're a bit late to this party, but it's certainly kicking off. But it's a bit confusing - Plan B's latest concept album has born his soul singing alter ego Strickland Banks, which means he's playing two characters tonight. It leaves for an odd mishmash of musical stylings for the last twenty minutes or so. A medley of covers includes Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me', Seal's 'Kiss From a Rose' and Dr. Dre's 'Forgot about Dre' , but delivered as soul (Strickland Banks), then rap (Plan B) and with Faith SFX (beatboxer) on hand to create a dubstep backing - it's a bit bizarre.Ìý A nu metal rendition of his Chase & Status collaborative song 'Pieces', see's Plan B mosh into his own band members, and things get pretty ruckus on and off stage. 'Stay Too Long' finishes his set and adds one more notch on Plan B's genre hopping belt. It's boggling but damn entertaining, and pretty much got something for everybody in this field.

Crazy In Love: The band - quite simply, whether you like Plan B or not -Ìý are incredible musicians, easily dealing with his genre jumping. Special mention to beatboxer Faith SFX who steals a bit of the limelight, and the guitarist who plays away while being shoved all over the stage be Plan B.

Why Don't You Love Me: It's got the party vibe down for the festival crowd, but at times it's like a massive production of a pub cover band. But then again, it's a festival!

Oxegen rating: 7/10
