Oxegen 2011 - The Rubber Bandits

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

ATL | 16:28 UK time, Sunday, 10 July 2011

Main Stage, Sunday, 2pm

Describe in a Tweet: Bags of fun.

What happened: Mass. The DJ's on an alter and Blindboy Boat Club and Mr.ÌýChrome are lead onstage by half a dozen alter-boys. Never been to a mass that opened with a 'hymn' about the alleged drug intake of a one time head of state, though.

It's daft theatre from start to finish. The alter-boys strip down to bright red y-fronts and transform into a homoerotic dance troupe, with our MC's reading slightly inappropriate 'prayers' about promiscuous ladies from Sligo and men from Cork with daft accents and chips on their shoulder. Some of the actual tracks are pretty forgettable ('TooÌýMany...') while others are properly great ('Fight Your Father') but it's hardly relevant.

Crazy In Love:Ìý'Horse Outside', with the semi-naked alter boys, is followed by a soulful reprise, performed with a full live band (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) and featuring a cameo from the Good Lord himself (turns out he's a big black guy). Nice.

Why Don't You Love Me:ÌýFor a lot of people, this would have been the most offensive performance in Oxegen's history. Those people weren't there.

Oxegen rating:Ìý9/10
