What happened: Arcade Fire have a special relationship with Electric Picnic and their performance in 2005 will probably go down as one of the best ever to take place in Stradbally. So how exactly do you follow that? It may not have been flawless, but the Montreal collective gave it their all. With a setlist drawing upon material from their three studio albums there's barely a filler track tonight and the crowd seem to know the back catalogue surprisingly well: Month Of May is the only track where the audience are a little muted.

Opening with Wake Up, Laika and Ready To Start, we're treated to what could only be described as an epic set. It's energetic and musically flawless: the distorted guitars ring out as the sound of the violins resonates in the night air. It's not just Win Butler leading the show: Régine Chassagne shines in the spotlight, her ode to her homeland Haiti sparkling and finding real favour in the crowd, engaging with the band and providing our first reprise of the night. It's an hour and a half of sheer brilliance and you just know they could kept it going. A textbook performance from one of the greatest acts in the world.

Swoon: Power Out is a simply stunning track live, beautifully dark with driving guitars and intense visuals sending the crowd into ecstasy.

Funeral: We're not too enthusiastic about the band going off and coming back on for an encore. Almost expected when headlining but when it's a support slot it just eats up valuable time and is more than a little indulgent.

EP rating: 9/10
