General Fiasco, Yes Cadets and the Wonder Villians
Mandella Hall, Belfast
30th October, 2011

There is a听buzz about Belfast as it prepares for all the glamour that comes with hosting the MTV Awards and the opportunity to showcase the fine local talent we have to offer.听 Tonight is the beginning of Belfast Music Week and is an extremely tasty 'amuse-bouche' to what the coming days have in store.

Originally planned for Speakeasy, the gig has been moved to the bigger Mandela Hall due to the high demand for tickets for the homecoming and final night of a short UK tour for the General Fiasco boys. They are joined tonight by Derry's pop-tastic Wonder Villains and Belfast based electro four piece Yes Cadets who have both supported them on the whole tour.

Belfast Festival: Elvis Costello
Waterfront Hall, Belfast
28th October, 2011

elviscostello

People were still filing in to the Waterfront when out skipped Mr Costello in a bespoke suit, cocked hat and the trademark glasses.听 The stage looked great with a grand piano and 5 guitars all in a pretty row and he picked up one of the acoustics and started strongly with 鈥極liver鈥檚 Army鈥. It was a good safe start from the veteran of 30 something albums and got the crowd on his side straight away.

There is no band on this tour and a solo show like this is a great opportunity to display the finer points of song craft from one of the modern greats.听 And with a captive audience that鈥檚 exactly what was provided. He strummed gently through 鈥楨ither Side of the Same Town鈥, Veronica and a moving version of 鈥楢 Good Year for the Roses鈥 but he loses points for the odd glance at the lyrics sheet in front of him. It鈥檚 understandable that someone who has written so many songs might forget a lyric or two but a veteran of the stage shouldn鈥檛 be resorting to cheat sheets.

Auntie Annies, Belfast
Friday 28th October

So it's Friday night, the start of the Halloween weekend and all sorts of Ghouls and Demons are in for a treat. Even before the band comes on the energy in Animal Disco is high, the dance floor is packed and a giant penguin is leading a conga around the room to Lisztomania by Phoenix. The DJ has the crowd in the palm of his hand鈥 that is until The Alice Kona Band appears.

The band walk on with purpose, ready to give the audience nothing but ear damage, you can tell they mean business tonight; it is their EP launch after all. The Alice Kona Band plunge head first into 'Jay Adams' off their new EP called 'Shark. Salem. Satan.'听

They keep the pace going with some simple, no nonsense punk, the sort of stuff that creates a mosh pit within seconds. 'Herman Brood' is up next, presenting us with chaotic riffs reminiscent of early Arctic Monkeys, followed up swiftly by 'Watching Rome Burn', a song that really builds tension with its hard and heavy bass intro, suiting the already established spooky Halloween vibe.

Belfast Festival: James Vincent McMorrow, The Staves
Grand Opera House, Belfast
23rd October 2011

jv

It's been a long, long year for James Vincent McMorrow. He wears it in his eyes. You can hear the exhaustion in his voice, and the rickety piano stool, that's been with him as he went from being a relatively unknown Dublin singer-songwriter, to an engaging theatre filling anthem maker, has taken one hell of a battering.

From a strictly medical standpoint, (though this reviewer is far from having any relevant qualifications) it's safe to assume McMorrow is running on a mixture of fumes, momentum and sheer awe at what he's achieved in the last 12 months.

EatenByBears, Seven Summits
Radar at the Speakeasy, Belfast
20th October 2011

If you see the world in black and white, then bands can fall in to two categories. You have the instantly gratifying, ridiculously addictive and then the polar opposite, slow burning, subtle growers. Both have their qualities and equally their weaknesses. In EatenByBears you have a band that demands your attention from the get go, teases you with delicious, enslaving rhythms but might not have the depth just yet.

By contrast Seven Summits are more of a slow seduction. Find a pair of headphones, a bit of spare time and fall in love, after a couple of listens, with a song like 'What's With All The Lights'. Their live act is a well crafted come-on, but you only get it once, in a noisy bar - Seven Summits don't do first impressions - and unfortunately this play-hard-to-get style didn't work with a Radar audience looking for more of a one night stand. Their set ebbed and flowed, with the lads taking the opportunity to try a few new songs (more synth, more melody) out, but the crowd was not a captive one.

SuggestiON-AIR - The best 80's release!

Post categories: ,听

ATL | 13:35 UK time, Monday, 24 October 2011

For this week's SuggestiON-AIR we're focusing on music from the 1980's - the rise of electronic instruments, hair metal and boys with eyeliner...it was a changing time in music.听

And we're going 80's this week because of the 主播大秀's Domesday Reloaded Project. Back in 1986, the 主播大秀 launched a campaign to record every day life throughout the UK for future generations to look back on. Millions of volunteers took photos of their area, wrote about their days and it was all compiled together. Now, 25 year's later, the archive has been re-opened for people [you!]听to update their area and make a note of the UK in 2011. The archive closes at the end of the month, so we thought we'd听go back in time, and听do a special on the year听1986 in music, with Across The Line itself beginning on that year as 'The Bottom Line'.

So what band or release epitomises the 1980's for you? Whether you were there to live it or looking back on this ancient time with young eyes. / or you can text 81771 after 8pm tonight. Here's team ATL's picks from the year听1986...

Johnny Marr鈥檚 dexterous guitar playing and Morrissey鈥檚 bombastically ostentatious lyrics set to the rock hard rhythm section of Joyce and O鈥橰ourke simply formulates my favourite indie band ever.

Uber Glitterati EP launch w/ Support

Yet another deliciously eclectic night courtesy of Shizznigh Promotions, Belfast electro-pop combo Uber Glitterati launch their debut EP tonight with a strong support bill evenly divided between electronic and alt-rock acts.听 But with the threat of illness and a few technical difficulties looming on the horizon, there鈥檚 a real chance it might not be the glorious occasion some had hoped for.

The first of tonight鈥檚 three support bands, Omagh-based four-piece Once Before Take Off get things underway with a set drenched in chugging breakdowns and formulaic choruses reminiscent of virtually post-hardcore act in history.

Dedicating songs to everything from 主播大秀 Introducing to the timely demise of Westlife, the Reubenesque 鈥業f Only鈥 and fanatical closer 鈥楯ump鈥 salvage a set very nearly scuppered by repetition, muffled vocals and cringeworthy instrument-acrobatics.

ATL | 15:57 UK time, Tuesday, 18 October 2011

bears

Another no brainer this week, with two of our favourite bands playing鈥.for free!

EatenByBears and Seven Summits are bands we love equally, even if the latter have been a little quiet of late while the former have found themselves very busy indeed - joining our line up at Vital in August, for a start.

Olan from EatenByBears is up for it big time:

"After spending so much time in the studio we're pretty excited to get out and turn this E.P. into a live show. We've got brand new songs, old songs revamped, and some little surprises along the way. We've also got ACTUAL cd's, REAL T-shirts, and AWESOME support bands."

EatenByBears also have a new track, 'Malcovich' which is an unexpected little Graceland-tinged treat from a band we expected to remain pretty noisy. We've no idea what the future holds for this lot as they've given us a mixed bag so far, but we're pretty excited about finding out. Get onboard the bandwagon!

EatenByBears and Seven Summits play Radar at The Speakeasy, Queens, this Thursday.

The Distortion Project is a beloved haven for Belfast metal-heads, saving us from the horrors of dance, pop or 鈥 woe betide! - indie music.

So what better way to spend your Saturday than in the confines of your local bar with a pint in one hand, a leather jacket slung over the back of your bar stool, and some sweaty guy shouting at you from a stage? This weekend is no exception as the congregation gathers for the weekly church of noise, but it鈥檚 a concoction of blues, more than metal, which bashes our eardrums this evening.

Baleful Creed are tonight鈥檚 opener. As self confessed fanboys of Firebird it鈥檚 a big deal for them, and it鈥檚 clear they鈥檝e brought their A-game tonight. They play a solid set, with a highlight being closing track 鈥楽uffer in Silence鈥. However, it鈥檚 not hard to hear the influence tonight鈥檚 headliners have had on their sound, and we鈥檇 like to hear something a little more original from a group who clearly have a lot talent onstage.

Following Tony Wright's recent departure ex-Panama King Niall Kennedy has - for now - stepped in as the newest Gang member, and initially we can't decide which is more odd: not seeing their former guitarist tuning up on the right, or seeing Kennedy neither commanding centre stage nor behind the kit, as he has done previously.

morningclawsatanimaldisco

Experimental, synth-pop band Morning Claws have always pulled something interesting out of the bag at their performances, whether it be big, mind expanding soundsacapes, or just the endearing charm of their handmade banner spanning across the stage.

The unassuming five piece from Belfast shuffle their way on to the stage and begin proceedings with 'Fight For Your Friends', an ear catching opener. They're a very tight band and display this as they slickly move from song to song with ease, seemingly in their own world. 'Goodbye, Moodkill' however is less impressive, the song quickly deteriorates into chaos and you're not quite sure what's going on anymore. The wall of sound does get a bit too much sometimes, and some people are trying to find any excuse for a smoke break.

Lead singer Paul takes a 20 second rest to address the crowd and immediately breaks in to 'For Want of Sorcery', a free download given to everyone on the way in, and in stark contrast to the last song, the band springing to life with an engaging and captivating effort that sounds like it would accompany you on a journey to another universe.

Lafaro

Our gig of the week leapt off the listings and slapped us in the face. Threatened, we had no choice but to big up , back in Belfast after a mammoth UK tour to properly launch their second album, Easy Meat.

Johnny Black, local rock pin-up and lead singer of the band, told us鈥.

'If you don't go, you're missing the best night of the year. are playing before us - we love those guys! And we've a little bit of a special treat planned as well, which I'm not going to divulge just now鈥.'

Finely tuned after a bunch of shows in the last couple of weeks and hungry for what's expected to be a big crowd on their own stomping ground, Johnny may well be right about that whole 'night of the year' stuff鈥.

Lafaro play The Limelight this Thursday, with support from The Bonnevilles.

Lantern For A Gale, The Assailants, Black Dunes
The Retro, Portrush

After an overdose of music and sport, it feels like we might be suffering from exhaustion, but the cobwebs are rapidly cleared by Black Dunes and their heavy, 鈥榢ick in the guts鈥 music.听

It鈥檚 dark, heavy and oppressive with almost no vocals (bar some barked out indecipherable words in a couple of songs, recalling the likes of Om and Sunn O).听 Their dirty rock and roll draws heavily on the dark side of the blues 鈥 sparse, bleak, and raw - all the while slowly gathering a hypnotic momentum, drawing you into its groove, and feeling rather reminiscent of the likes of Two Lone Swordsmen.

It鈥檚 impossible to ascertain song titles as the interaction is limited to a few comments which can hardly be picked up due to a failure to use the microphone 鈥 a sign of the rawness of this band, and something that should mark them out as being worthy of being watched as they develop from this impressive beginning.

SuggestiON-AIR - Best Prolific Musicians

Post categories: ,听

ATL | 13:37 UK time, Monday, 10 October 2011

On this week's Across The Line radio show, our special house band is in the form of Martin Byrne's 听project. From January 1st 2011, Martin Byrne has been writing, recording and performing (with the help of some guests) a brand new original piece of music every day. He's set to carry on doing this to January 1st 2012, which safely qulifies him (we reckon)听as one of the most prolific musicans in the world today.

With that in mind, we started to think about the best prolific musicians that never really disappoint. Those bands that seem to retain quality, album after album.听Let us know who you would pick听on / or you can text 81771 after 8pm tonight. Here's team ATL's picks...

REM
Rigsy - ATL Presenter

While I've barely mustered an iota of interest in anything they've released in the last ten years, I'll never grow tired of their first 8 albums. Every one is completely different, a total reinvention. And just as it is with the Beatles, a proper REM fan struggles to name his/her all time favourite song or album - it changes all the time, matching your mood and your outlook.

GOTW: Ecker (Last Ever Night)

Post categories: ,听

ATL | 10:24 UK time, Wednesday, 5 October 2011

Not so much a gig as an event and a celebration. For four years has brought bass heavy, alt-clubbing to Belfast, showcasing DJs and producers (both local and international) who do things a little differently. This Friday it all comes to a crushing conclusion with one final blowout as Ecker decides to quit while it's miles ahead.

Resident and co-promoter explains:

'Friday will be the usual mix of bass heavy numbers and exciting local talent. We are joined by Brian Greene from Kinnego Flux who is doing a live set along with live vocals, S>>D will be giving us a glitchy electro set, Nez and Space Dimension Controller will be going back to back and then finally myself, T-Polar and Bloom will bring the whole occasion to an end. We'd love to say thanks to everyone who supported us over the years and raise a glass. Its been an excellent four years and the night exceeded our expectations on many an occasion but it's time to try something new and bring Ecker to a close. It's not over till the last bassline drops.'

Ecker takes place this Friday at Love and Death, Belfast.

The road of the singer songwriter is a track walked by many. plastic rose - animal disco

Auntie Annies, Belfast
Friday 30th September 2011

Tonight closes an old chapter and opens a new one in the A Plastic Rose story. Not only is this gig going to be recorded and burned onto CD before Auntie Annie's closes, it is most probably going to be the last time A Plastic Rose play many of the songs on tonight's set list. There's a huge crowd upstairs in Animal Disco tonight and you can understand why, this band have created a huge following since their formation in 2006 and the opportunity to be part of their history on a live CD could end up being one of those, 鈥淚 was there鈥 moments.

A Plastic Rose open proceedings with a real oldie called 'My Avalanche' off their first self released EP entitled 'Five Second Stare', you can tell the crowd is full of die hard fans as they know every single word and the enthusiasm of the crowd only spurs on the bands already energetic and exciting performance. The boys then break into something a bit harder off their latest release 'The Promise Notes', with guitarist and co-frontman Ian McHugh taking lead vocals for 'The Metal Man'.

SuggestiON-AIR: The Long Song

Flaming Lips at belsonic - Photo by Alan Maguire

Never the conformists, recenlty released a 6 hour song for their ever enthusiastic fans, only to follow it up by a special 24 hour song (apparently embedded in a skull - as you do). That's dedicated listening! But it got us thinking about some of the best songs to break the 3 minute, verse chorus verse rule book. Those songs that few can pull off, epically long but brilliant at the same time.

So in short,听what's your favourite long song? Hit听us up on / or you can text 81771 after 8pm tonight. Here's team ATL's picks...

****

Underworld - Rez (9mins 57secs)
Rigsy - ATL Presenter

Having a look at the music on my laptop, a fair amount of the tracks over 9 minutes are the work of techno duo/trio Underworld. And while I've the attention span of a drunk goldfish and approach with caution any track over three minutes, I've no problem with Underworld indulging themselves and their fans. These tracks need time to grow, to expand and to melt the listeners brain. A radio edit of 'Rez' would be a completely different song - it wouldn't work. Our brains would remain intact, for a start.....
