Remember ? We played their awesome track 'Upside' last night just like we played it all those times back in the day. We also mentioned how Red Sirus singer and social butterfly JP Mc Corley had a new band on the go called

A Charmed Life

Donna Legge and Rigsy

A Charmed Life

That particular track by my beloved - that had to be in there.

Presenting for the first time a show I grew up besotted with, listening every night, practically stalking Mike Edgar...yes, Monday 28 January 2002 was quite a big day. Donna Legge and Paul McClean were, a mere few weeks previous, people I bothered at gigs and club nights. I'd bend their ear about their show and my own take on local music. Hopefully just about staying on the right side of irritation.

Now we were a team.

Ten years later (five since she moved to her new slot) myself and Donna co-presented Across The Line again, enjoying a mere drop of the good stuff this island has given ATL playlists in the last decade. While the music was all Irish, we couldn't resist chatting about daft adventures with Noel Gallagher and the Foo Fighters. About the time I made Tim Burgess from The Charlatans cry and how Donna accidentally flirted with the same man. I cringed as I remembered the moment the world stopped just as my face made contact with Connor from The Thrills' groin, as Interpol and The Polyphonic Spree looked on.

We presented three series of ATL TV together, hosted all sorts of gigs, made good friends and occasional foes along the way. The three of us (including long suffering producer Paul McClean) fought like鈥.family. We almost sickened ourselves of music festivals and were responsible for some fantastic, ambitious outside broadcasts.

We often got it wrong, misguided zeal getting in the way of 鈥.common sense. But it was always fun and, for myself personally, I still get the same ridiculous buzz presenting this show now as I did back then, even if I do (and always will) miss sharing enthusiasm, laughs, tears and high fives with my wonderful co-presenter.

It's been emotional!

Rigsy

Thursday 26th January

Having barely been off the road since the release of 鈥楨asy Meat鈥 in October, Belfast noise-punk eejits LaFaro have underwent a few notable changes: the band's second album has received practically unanimous praise from press and fans alike, long-time friend of the band Oisin O'Doherty has replaced his brother, stand-in bassist Cahir O'Doherty, and frontman Jonny Black has been rendered temporarily immobile having broke his leg just last week. With all that firmly in mind, there's a definite sense that tonight is set to be something special.

Thee Higher Beings, Deerstalker, Mudblind
Auntie Annie鈥檚
Wednesday, 25th January, 2012

With their lead guitarist soon bound for down under, desert rock four-piece Thee Higher Beings have decided to call it a day on the current form of the band. It's no doubt a pity, but with their almost celebratory hard-hitting sound - not to mention support tonight from two up-and-coming, significantly younger bands - this is all about looking forward, not back.

With their drummer currently out of the country, Belfast blues-rockers Mudblind go unplugged this evening in what proves to a revelatory start to the night. Whilst the laidback dynamic of 'Blues Island Train' reveals the intricacies and sheer tightness of their sound, frontman Rab Kane's commanding vocals come to the fore on new song, 'Working Man's Blues', and the swampy groove of set closer/highlight 'Magic Roundabout'. Unplugged or otherwise, Mudblind have few rivals in this country with their approach.听

When Leonard Cohen sings about heartbreak, a million bruised hearts all over the world weep bitter tears with him. But when Billy Ray Cyrus shares the pain of his 鈥楢chy Breaky Heart鈥, we laugh at his mullet til the tears run down our cheeks. The reason is one of that old musical chestnut 鈥榓uthenticity鈥, and this showcase gig in the Black Box as part of the festival gives us a veritable journey through the various aspects of this prickly issue.

has an undeniably powerful voice, capable of scaling mountains, or exploring the depths of the ocean. There is nothing 鈥榢ooky鈥 or 鈥榪uirky鈥 about MacIntyre, and her directness of performance seems almost unusual in this day and age. Instead, accompanied by piano and guitar, her set would be more suited to a late night in Ronnie Scott鈥檚 Jazz Club in London, or a cocktail lounge in the 1970s. It might not be particularly cool, but her own material is strong, and it is very easy to imagine her doing a set of torch songs in a competent and entertaining style. In a sense, it matters not what she says, but the way she says it is most enjoyable.

He doesn鈥檛 let that distract him though, producing some mournful melancholia. New song 鈥楢 Man To Your Wife鈥 is sparse and stretched, the bleakness added to by the lack of music.

GUEST BLOG - At the Drive-In play Belfast by Cahir FWW

    Post categories: ,听,听

    ATL | 15:03 UK time, Monday, 16 January 2012

So it was announced last week that At the Drive-In are to reform and play selected shows this year. Across the Line were big fans of the band and actually recorded their Belfast show back in 2000. On the night, a young Derry band were chosen to support at the gig, and Cahir O'Doherty the bands singer, and now frontman with long-standing ATL 听faves Fighting With Wire gives us the view from backstage.

    At The Drive-in.听Belfast Empire. 9/11/00

It was November 2000. I remember getting a phone call from our manager telling me that our band (Clearshot) got the support slot for the Irish shows, we couldn鈥檛 believe it. At the time the band were just breaking, one arm scissor was all over MTV and radio, they were in every music publication, their 3rd album relationship of command was creeping its way into everyone鈥檚 CD player and It was so exciting, there hadn鈥檛 been a buzz in rock music like this since Nirvana 10years earlier, but it wasn鈥檛 until they broke up shortly after the Irish dates, that they cemented their place as one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years.

The show was in Belfast Empire music hall 9th December 2000. When we arrived at the venue to sound check everyone was really nice and made us feel welcome. were the main support, they were a kick ass garage punk band from Seattle, they were funny guys and liked to party.

The guys from ATDI were really nice too, a couple of them watched our sound check and invited us into their dressing room, they seemed tired, I could tell they had been touring forever. At this point the different factions within the band had already manifested and were sticking together - Jim, Tony and Paul who later formed and Omar and Cedric who formed .

The gig was sold out, the Empire was packed and there was an air of anticipation. We didn鈥檛 know what to expect playing in front of so many people as we took to the stage, but the audience were totally up for it, it was a great show. I don鈥檛 think we knew at that point that how influential this show would be for us as a band, we thought we knew what we were doing we were about to get taught a lesson.

We got our gear off the stage super quick and headed into the crowd with a few beers to watch these American bands tear Belfast a new one. Murder City Devils hit the stage, they were full of energy and honesty and blasted the crowd hard, it was guitar attack, full on punk rock. Lethal!

At this point you could cut the tension with a knife. I remember hearing this weird electronic intro music really low and then ATDI literally exploded on to the stage. I was blown away, totally immersed in their show. I had never seen anything like it, Cedric bounced all over the stage pulling weird shapes yelping and firing the mic into the air occasionally strangling himself with the cord and screaming Beware! Beware! Omar beating his guitar, throwing it wrestling it, making it sound like an explosion! I鈥檇 never heard a guitar sound like that before. They were losing their minds while the rest of the band thrashed it out so hard, like their lives depended on it. I was mesmerized, as was everyone in the room, it felt like we were getting to see something very special and we all knew it. Their songs and their passion for what they were doing filled the room and influenced me for one completely. I knew I had to rethink everything at that point and it felt great. The only thing that got tiresome was their constant battle with the audience slam dancing or moshing though, It was truly one of the best shows I have ever seen. By the time the band finished everyone in that room had that look on their face; the open mouth, the look of disbelief, what the **** just happened? There was a buzz about it for ages and it wasn鈥檛 the tinnitus we all had from the crushing guitars, it was the fact we had something to get excited about again, rock music had become so dull, so predicable and here were these guys doing what they always believed in, it was inspiring.

A month or so later the band went on indefinite hiatus, to say I was disappointed is an understatement. But looking back there was nothing else they could do. Exhaustion had taken its toll and so the flood gates opened. So many bands crawled out of the underground and into the mainstream, rock was alive and kicking once again.

I saw Nirvana 10 years before in the kings hall and I had the same feeling leaving that show, a feeling of hope and excitement for the future. Here was a band that got it so right and worked so hard only to burn out before they reached their full potential. They set the bar so high for themselves and for every band that followed. For me ATDI were the last band to breath life back into rock and roll. I鈥檓 excited that they have reformed at a time when we鈥檝e never needed them more.

    The Black Box, Belfast
    12th January 2012

The hype of the awards and the critics has done its job as the much acclaimed has sold out in advance, and it鈥檚 a bunged Black Box that waits for the evening鈥檚 sole performer. Although he鈥檚 not alone, instead accompanied by a drummer, guitarist/keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist and, of course, the now ubiquitous box of tricks and technical听gadgetry听that accompanys every musician these day.

Before the gig actually starts the trio have a little sport like team huddle, as though gearing themselves up for the big match. Its not a common sight at gigs 鈥 usually such things take place backstage 鈥 but perhaps they need a bit of reassurance for (as we鈥檙e reminded a few times) this is their first gig of the year.

Amateur Historians, Joshua Burnside, My Sunday Hat, Like a Ninja - Auntie Annies, Belfast

    Post categories: ,听

    ATL | 17:45 UK time, Tuesday, 10 January 2012

Not many bands play their second ever gig headlining a four-act bill at such a reputable venue as Auntie Annie鈥檚. Like it or not, it normally takes a few months of endless haggling, unspeakable support slots, and a fair bit of backslapping to arrive at such a position. Luckily for them, though, Belfast indie-pop three-piece Amateur Historians have somehow sidetracked such protocol by heading a ridiculously diverse line-up at their sophomore show tonight.

A Strabane-based four-piece playing scuzzy, slightly confused hardcore, Like A Ninja are the first of tonight鈥檚 completely opposing acts. While their youthful enthusiasm is entertaining - contagious even - you can鈥檛 help but get the impression you鈥檙e at the wrong gig. That said, despite nods to the likes of InMe and being in possession a bassist who thinks it wise to play with his teeth (actually), it would be stupid to completely write off so early in their career, even if there鈥檚 more chance of Gary Glitter receiving a knighthood than them making an impact in 2012.

Not Squares at Auntie Annies, Belfast

    ATL | 11:44 UK time, Thursday, 5 January 2012

    Not Squares

Wow, so this is it... the last Animal Disco ever. The band who played Auntie Annie's this time last year are bringing the 鈥淭ropical, Indie, Electro Dance Party鈥 to a close with none other than Two Door Cinema Club spinning the decks. Surely a night to remember?

It's set to be a fantastic night, however no New Years Eve is complete without the obligatory countdown to Auld Lang Syne and whilst everyone sings and embraces their fellow man, Not Squares quietly creep on stage and begin 2012 with a bang courtesy of 'Can Opener'. The band build up the crowd using the song as if it's a warm up; it's a bit slower than what they would usually produce, but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in it's gravitas. With every beat of the drum grabbing your attention, Not Squares have heralded their arrival in most epic fashion.

    Welcome to 2012!

    Post categories:

    ATL | 22:01 UK time, Monday, 2 January 2012

It seemed like the easy option - easing our way into 2012 with what's known as a 'disc show' - two hours without features or profiles or anything that takes a little planning. As it turned out, it's been one of the trickiest shows we've done in a while. Such is the quantity of decent bands and artistes in this country, narrowing them down to a mere two hour playlist proved a bit of a nightmare.

So what went out is hardly definitive or conclusive - it's just a mere pick and mix of new Northern Irish music and bands we reckon we'll be playing loads on the show this year. Some are reasonably established, some we hadn't even heard of a few days ago. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Northern Irish music - both quality and quantity. 2012 is going to be pretty hectic...
