Telling the story of the underground bands who crossed America in search of adventure in the 1980s, this is an essential book about music, capturing that spirit of people who care so much about their band that they devote their every waking moment to it. Funny, tragic, and poignant, if this doesn’t make you want to form a band….then you maybe need to read it again.

Let it Blurt: The Life & Times of Lester Bangs – Jim DeRogatis

When it came to writing about music, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs wrote the book on it. And this book tells his own incredible story, from his humble upbringing, through to the years when he ruled the pages of the world’s greatest music papers, writing scathing reviews of records he deemed unworthy, whilst elevating the greats to places undreamed of. This book puts forth the idea that the greatest writer in America could only really write album reviews, but boy! – what reviews they were!

The Glamour Chase: The Maverick Life of Billy MacKenzie – Tom Doyle

Scottish pop duo The Associates briefly set the charts on fire in the early 80s, but Tom Doyle’s book lifts the lid on this enigmatic and troubled figure, a man who inspired fierce devotion and admiration from the likes of Bono and Bjork. Frequently hilarious and playful, the book doesn’t shy away from capturing the contradictions in this man who was both captivated and repelled by the fame game, before taking his own life in 1997. A fitting tribute to a much missed musical icon.
