As national album day closes in and as a certified lover and supporter of new music it got me thinking. What IS my favourite album? The answer is I don’t have one. Which might come as a surprise to many, but I tend to listen to music on the go nowadays; rather than taking a full album in, in one sitting.

I feel over the years how we consume music has really changed. And how artist’s release music now has changed too. People’s attention spans are much shorter, there’s a heavier focus on singles and recording costs are higher than ever. However I still believe an album is an important piece of work, a milestone in an artist’s career and even if I don’t have one favourite album there are still quite a few stand outs that are worth mentioning.

1. Dirty pretty Things - Waterloo To Anywhere
2. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
3. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
4. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
5. Corinne Bailey Rae - Self Titled
6. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

These were albums I grew up listening to and really represented different times in my life whether that was going to school, “revising” (and I use that term loosely haha), or just actively listening to some of my favourite artists. But those albums created stand out moments and memories for me over the years and that’s what’s so great about discovering an album you love. You’ll always associate them with a certain point in your life or that moment when you fell in love with an artist’s work. Isn’t it wonderful that music really does have a huge affect on us? It creates that connection.

So if you do have a favourite album or don’t (like me), I’d love to know why? Why that particular piece of music? Is it the lyrics, the concept? Or maybe it’s just REALLY good. Let me know….

And most importantly happy National Album day!
