Living Legends

Raj&Pablo | 10:04 UK time, Friday, 3 October 2008

The term Living Legend is used almost daily now that you almost lose the true meaning of the word. Everyone who is anyone in show business is sooner or later called a Star, legend, diva - even if they have featured in a five minute blink-and-you-miss reality show and to paraphrase Andy Warhol - "five minutes of fame syndrome. We were thinking of this when Paul Newman and then Mahendra Kapoor passed away last week and then on Sunday celebrating "the nightingale of India" -ÌýÌý Lata Mangeshkar's birthday. The afore-mentioned are true Legends. And then this week we hooked up with the irrepressible Dev Anand.Ìý It takes a lot for us to be speechless but Dev Saab exudes a vibrancy and presence that makes us feel awe struck.

Dev-Anand_with_RajPablo.jpgRaj:ÌýI was literally shaking to be in the same room as a man who has seen the birth of Bollywood - he mirrors the development of modern India - penniless after the partition, went to Mumbai to pursue his dreams of stardom. His movies from Taxi Driver, Hum Dono, Jewel Thief to Guide, Tere Mere Sapne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna to Des Pardes (the first Bollywood movie to look at British Asian life) are milestones.

Pablo:ÌýNot only am I amazed at his style - he is iconic and the original debonair hero - from his trademark hair in the 50's to his scarf's, his mannerisms - he exudes a persona that defines fashion statement. A latter day Cary Grant, but what floors me more is the youthful twinkle in his eyes - they are still sparkling and make me realise that age is a state of mind.
