AN AUDIENCE WITH MERLIN

Chris Evans | 10:13 UK time, Wednesday, 20 December 2006

My goodness me, the Once a Month Club took it鈥檚 toll last night鈥

I can鈥檛 feel the left hand side of my face, I have no sensation in it whatsoever. I feel like The Phantom of the Opera on a bad night.

I鈥檓 in bed, the daylight that I normally relish feels like torture. My fingers that normally skip across the keys are acting like a down and out lurching first one way and then the next. Oh sweet mother of Mary, why do we do it ?

Because it鈥檚 fun I suppose and because we can.

Mr. Terry Venables was on the show last night, I鈥檓 lucky to know him. During the interview he dropped in the fact that we hadn鈥檛 seen each other for a while and also that he was out having a few Christmas drinks. I said I come and find him after we came off air. He thought I was having him on but find him we did. He was ever so pleased to see us and I was ever so glad we bothered.

El Tel is a fine fine man, a hero to be honest, women love him and men love him and even the F.A. love him - at the moment.

He told us a story. He said that he鈥檇 been out yesterday for one of his lads鈥 lunches. The kind he鈥檇 been having for years, he then went on to say how he and Bobby Moore had started the tradition, me and my two pals were sat there open mouthed, this was first hand legendaryship. However the best was yet to come.

He told us what they did and how they decided whom to invite and then he uttered the immortal words,

鈥淲e used to meet once a month.鈥

Once a month, Once a bloody Month !

What more endorsement could our little club have ? It was almost like Obi One Kenobi was handing over the force. Even as I write, my hands feel lighter almost back to their dancing best.. It鈥檚 moments like this when you know life鈥檚 ok.

Seven hours later, life was still ok when we were queuing up for three large portions of chips, three fishcakes, three steak and kidney pies and two portions of curry sauce, I love it. I love it all.

Bacon sarnies this morning and not an ounce of guilt to go with them. I wish we could live for ever, this 鈥渂eing alive on planet earth thing鈥 really works for me.

x.

P.S. If you haven鈥檛 checked out our Nige鈥檚 recipe for gravy yet, you must, it鈥檚 the best ever !

P.P.S. We have put a call out for the alternative Twelve Days of Christmas song, any more info. That can help us locate it would be appreciated.

P.P.P.S. How does one come up with an idea liked Phantom of The Opera in the first place ?

I have work drinks at lunchtime, then our christmas party tomorrow before finally collapsing on friday. No time to shop but I'm not panicing yet. I have made gravadlax and mince pies and gingerbread which I can distribute in lieu of presents (I hope)

    Morning Chris,

The Phantom came from a story (not sure if true) from France.

You were it such legendary company indeed - wow.

I can recall hearing some alternative versions (comedic) of christmas carols but as far as I know the records aren't available anymore.

I was out last night too - what a night but nothing on the scale of yours.

mmmmmmm bacon sarnies with red sauce - divine, pity I'm in work and can't get any right now.

Thanks again for the panto on the radio I was cheerfully smiling most of the way home.

All the very best to every blogger - it loomed very foggy again this morning added to minus 1 temp and defrosting the windows to drive to work.

Going to see my mum tomorrow - good. Taking her to do her food shopping - bad!!

Got to finish an audit report then I think I'll go home to bed and try and shake the cold off.

    Morning Bloggers and schlogger,

I am still in awe of you once a month club! And now to find out it was once the way of the late great Bobby Moore and Terry Venables (and Chris Evans) just makes me even more determined to start one myself. I have said this before but as with so many things if it is for me they do not get done before I would do a deed for another person! Time to get a little selfish I think. ;-)

Just for the record I never get a hangover at all, it well know in the house of the BigUn that I suffer from varying degrees of flue after a night out ;-))

Gaston Leroux's classic novel, The Phantom of the Opera, tells the story of a figure with a deformed face who haunts the Paris Opera House hoping to win the heart of the only woman he has ever loved. It has inspired at least six films, one TV movie, and two musicals since it was published in 1911. This was before Andrew Lloyd Webber got his hands on it :-)

Smile everyone this is a time of celebration :-)))

P.S. Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.

One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.

As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cut-glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!

When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat.

The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist. "Miss Beatrice", he said, "I wonder if you would tell me about this?" pointing to the bowl.

"Oh, yes," she replied, "Isn't it wonderful? I was walking through the Park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu all winter."

    Hi Chris (and everyone)

I do sympathise with the hangover. Just horrendous. However, what a great night you had, so the piper must be paid! I love Terry Venables and just adored Bobby Moore - he was gorgeous (and a pretty good footballer!).

Thank you to my fellow blog friends who mentioned me by name yesterday - lovely touch and really personal. I feel really bad because I just sent a "general" message!

We stop work tomorrow at lunchtime and next week have to come into work for one day, we have to choose between us which day. Everyone else I know stops tomorrow until 2nd Jan, so I feel quite annoyed. However, we have to think of the poor souls in the retail trade - how do they stand it?! I would be so grumpy if I had to work on Boxing Day!

Back to work for the moment, but no doubt I will check in later!

I loved Bobby Moore, especially as I'm a West Ham fan. I was about 14 before I realised that it was England who'd won the World Cup in 1966, as my dad always used to say "West Ham won the World Cup you know" and like a fool I believed him!!

I don't have any more Christmas work do's to go to now but I'm going to party with 'im indoors on Friday evening, when our Christmas will begin - YAY!!!!!!!

Hello Shloggers!! And a Merry Christmas to all.

I am envious of those of you who went out last night. I, on the other hand made a fatal error when planning my Christmas gifts for loved ones. I decided that I would MAKE everyone's gift this year....yes, I would knit everyone something using my knitting skills I have honed over the last year. What was I thinking? To make matters worse, I can't back out now because I announced my plans to folks last October. So they are expecting knitted goodness from me.

So my evenings this week have been filled with nothing but knitting. I wake up in the morning with my fingers cramped and my eyes crossed. When I am not knitting and am at work, I am worrying about knitting. Use this as a cautionary tale my friends. Next time I get a bright idea like this, I hope I get it in January instead of October!

We were sitting upstairs (from distant cobweb memories...) and during the Twelve Days of Christmas I had a paddy because I couldn't keep up with the singing. My mother then took me (rather briskly by one arm as I recall) all the way back to the entrance of the cathedral and MADE ME WAIT THERE, IN THE COLD, BY THE DOOR, UNTIL THE END OF THE CONCERT.

I've tried to go back over the past week and couldn't manage but recognise all ther old familiar names. Well done for keeping up the standard that I have failed. The most significant event in my life since I last wrote was Sunday 10th Dec when I was cooking Christmas dinner for my son's ENTIRE football team. He had mentioned the previous week that it was to be their last match before Christmas that coming Sunday and it was a shame that nothing had been arranged for them to celebrate Christmas together. Regretting it as soon as the words fell from my mouth I suggestd that I cook a Christmas dinner for them to have at our house after the match. Son was delighted and got on the phone immediately. Later that evening I asked how many bottles of bubbly for 11 (a football team) and he said, "And the subs and the manager and the coach - that makes 16!". "But some are bound to be unable to make it." "No." "There were 16 takers?" "YES!" More than I could comfortably chew......but I do so love a challenge!
Luckily I have a VERY good friend whom I've known since school who's hobby is cooking and she is amazing with trad English dishes including the grandest of them all - Christmas Dinner! I booked her to go to the butcher and buy the 20lb Turkey on the Saturday and roast it on the Sunday. She was up at 5am to get it in the oven on time for dinner at 3. It was stuffed the previous night. As sous chef I prepared mountains of veg and purchased all the other necessities incl. champagne and crackers and port. It was going to be a blow out! I had been up since 7 preparing veg so that I could go and watch the match for 10.30 kick off. They lost 3-1 and rather than join them in the bar for their post-match insults, swearing and obscenities competition I rushed off home to get back to their dinner. I was home by 1 and chef arrived a minute later with the cooked turkey and 80 pigs in blankets. Neighbours were arriving with chairs, crockery, cultlery and glasses and I felt like the wizard's apprentice! It wasn't exactly flowing at that point! I then took a call from my son at 1.20 asking if I could have dinner prepared by 2. "No way! I may even be late dishing up but definitely not early. Why?" "Arsenal are playing Chelsea and we don't have Sky". I was gutted but I realsied the importance of this match to these lads and knew that I had a choice - either I could have a houseful of miserable Arsenal supporters eating the dinner we'd cooked so lovingly and wishing they were somewhere else or I could phone around and see if I could get 16 hungry mates round to eat. "No worries son. The food won't go to waste. Enjoy yourself at the pub. Up the Gooners." "Are you sure?!!" my son asked incredulously, followed by, "Did you open the bubbly?" xxx

By 5pm I had 19 people eating Christmas dinner buffet style delighting in the fact that they hadn't had to cook on top of going Christmas shopping. My newest neighbour who was only 4 weeks old had his first social and didn't cry once all the time he was there. This is the kind of alchemy I love - turning a massive disappointment into a delight. Mustering the will from a place of disappointment can be hard but once the energy was tapped and the wand drawn the magic was at work! xxxx

To put the icing on the cake Son came home with 4 from the footie team around 6.30 to literally scraps of food which they scavenged like vultures after sinking several pints of beer watching a disappointing game of footie with a few crisps and sandwiches.

By the end of the evening it had been decided that I had had the biggest blowout ever. I'd asked 16 men to my house for a free four course meal incl. champagne and waitress service with as much booze as they could drink and the best juke box in town and I had been blown out for a Chelsea/Arsenal match by every one of them including my own son! Priceless. xxx

Anyway........I had a day of Christmas shopping yesterday. 10 of us singletons went up town and paired off into boy/girl couples and arranged to meet at a fab restaurant for 8pm. I ended up falling in love by lunchtime and the two of us spent the rest of the time getting into the spirit on mulled wine by the Thames and having the most romantic time of my life. Central London by the river in the winter with a bit of mist and mulled wine.......I think I would have fallen in love with myself if I'd been alone. It's a magical place. And people go to Paris to propose.....?! x x x x x x

Due to current circumstances (yes it's a man! - can't tell all just yet as I don't want to break the spell I have him under!) I am unlikely to blog again for the foreseeable future so I would like to wish you a very loving, indulgent and gratifying Christmastide. Spread the love, keep it real and keep the doors open.

Gloria - i love the idea of blog streaking. That is sooooo funny. So the question is - am I or am i not...... dont worry, im not. I wouldnt do that to you all, especially not around dinner time!

Anna Ryman - frm one anna to another, goose fat is usually found in good deli's or farm shops but i think that some supermarkets sell it now. Its in tins, and not sure if its any good but i reckon im gonna try it.

    Joannie - fingers crossed!

Moose - wow, a BOMC, how i wish i lived in covent garden to partake in that. I am not sure many people will find their way to my random local the dog and duck. I would be there in spirit tho, without a doubt.

Gutted, I am excited about christmas but not 'feeling' it yet. Have too major jobs to sign off, one is done tomorrow the other hopefully friday, maybe then i can really get going.

s'pose i should sign off and write christmas cards. maybe that will help get the vibe going!

    Hello Chris,

    Great show!

I am the very, very proud owner of the 1977 Christmas Radio Times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wonderful husband has bought this as one of my presents for Christmas. Having listened to show this evening I thought I ought to let you know. By the way I was born during this exciting year on the same day as Mr Ronan Keating 04/03/1977. I must say this was a grand year!!!

May I wish you and your team a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!!!!

    Hello all

Sorry I've not been around today. Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone who's bought my BOTB.

Moose - Dr Booth has told me that his radio appearance has been pushed back to Friday.

Gaby - if I could pay you, I would. But as I have given up all my royalties to a worthy cause, I'm a bit strapped.

    Lynne - I hope so!

    regards

    Greetings Blogmeisters.

    Christmas. Has. Begun. Fact.

I've finished up at work now. Managed a quick game of squash tonight before a quick dose of James & Oz and an early night. Tomorrow sees the implementation of

    Operation Food Shop.

Up early to hit the supermarket while its still half asleep and not expecting us. Well, thats the plan, anyway. Then we hop down the M4 to Celtic Manor for a spot of pre-Christmas r&r, a bit of mountain biking, oh, and a drink or two.

Back Saturday (maybe in time to see Fulham, ahem, beat Wet Spam? - sorry Moose/Gaby) and then we can prepare a few things ahead of Monday.

This really is the last weekday post from me (mind you, I could take my laptop with me.....) so, best wishes all. I'll try and catch the show, if not I'll 'listen again' at the weekend.

    Peace all

    Hi Chris

I was asking myself exactly the same question last Thursday morning, why do we do it?? My husband and I attended his works christmas do at a lovely country pub near Chichester.

We have 3 children and I had had a particularly challenging day, so was ready for my first glass of white wine, unfortunatley several more glasses of white were consumed followed by 2 flaming sambucas and a baileys!!

On Thursday morning the world looked a very grim place, it took me all day to recover, but on Friday night found myself on our annual girls night out in Godalming on the gin and tonics. Note to myself "must drink gin and tonic in future not wine" or maybe water would be better!!

Have decided to try a non alcoholic January.

Came to see you on Sunday and bought one of your lovely Christmas trees for the children, and they love it.

Keith : ) I, too, tried to behave myself for a few days so they would be thrown off the scent. Funny thing is, a few days ago I posted what I thought were some relatively saucy posts (well, until I saw cathmels' - well done babe, for getting that one through, am still smiling at what you put, am tempted to join in the game...my last time was ... lol .... .) and they all got past the BP - there's nowt stranger than BP.

Moose - count me in too for the BOAMC. I have my book ready and am practising walking with book under arm instead of on head.

Matt from Rudgwick - have a good one - back saturday eh? ah just in time to see Reading beat Everton hopefully. I will be there, at the Mad Stad. C'mon you Royals.

Moose - with the bug you've had, are you "forever blowing bubbles"? Glad to hear you're recovering though.

Cathmel - good luck and I hope all goes well for you and Jasper. I also hope that you get everything you wish for, and I mean everything!!

Lynne - if Clive was anything like Enoch, he loved Christmas. I could never hang choccie decorations on the tree 'cos he'd eat them all. He would start from the back of the tree in the obvious hope that no-one would notice they were missing!!!!!

Tracey-Anne - take it easy and enjoy being spoilt if it's offered!

Jax - be strong, be kind to yourself, turn off the mobile and look ahead - I reckon 2007 will be your year.

I'll be popping in now and then over the holiday if anyone else feels like joining me?

A question for Fox the Fox if I may.

When listening to the Foxs' music I find myself joining in for the 'they'll never out fox the fox...' part, as do you.

I suspect lots of other people do as well so, can The Fox estimate how many people in the country join in at this point and also tell me, if all these people were in the same area, what the accumulative decible reading would be 1 metre from source.

I know it's not technically a business question but The Fox seems to have conquered all comers in that department, and as my old Nan used to say, "...if the fox can't be foxed in it's own field.....then broaden the brush!!".

P.S. Do you know Basil Brush at all?

    Love the show, merry christmas.

    Hi,
Chris, first about the beetle. Try a new condenser(Obviously you'd change the points the same time). If that doesn't work there's a little square diaphragm on't carburettor (they call it an accelerator pump, sounds alot more than it is)That should sort it.p.s. last time I talk about work after five.
Second, Why does a dog stick his head out of the car window at seventy miles an hour but won't let you blow in it's face?
Third, THE OFFSIDE RULE for women(sorry i mean for Johnny and women) c/o Ken Bruce.
You are standing behind someone at a shop buying the last jacket left, that you really wanted.
They realise that they don't have enough money.
You also don't have enough money so you can't move to the front, but your friend back in the que will lend you the rest.
They can throw their wallet to you, you can step to the front and buy the jacket. They could also throw their wallet to the front of the que after which you can step around to the front of the que and hey presto "New Jacket"
    Bon chance 2007,
Paul,Annie and ickle baby Beth who took her first steps over christmas, well done santa!
