CUT THE RIBBON SLIK.

Chris Evans | 16:15 UK time, Friday, 5 September 2008

Oh my goodness me, picture the scene, it was just like back in Tarby's day of...

...opening carpet and bed shops for loads of money.

I agreed in a moment of haste, always the best time to catch me if you want a yes, to open the new butchers in me mum's village. Actually it was more the opening of their new counter rather than a whole shop. The shop has been there for ages.

There was a real life ribbon and a pair of scissors and a photorapher and everything. A fee had never been discussed or expected so imagine my surprise when I was offered a huge slab of meat as recompense. A whole strip loin of beef to be precise. What a result !

"Would you like that slicing into steaks ?" said the boss.

"Er, yeah why not ?" I replied. "I'll give them to friends and people at work." Goodness me I thought, he'll be able to chop thirty or forty steaks from all that, who on earth am I going to give them all to.

Anyway back he came some ten minutes later with just the ten steaks !

"Thanks a lot," he said, "have a good show."

So that's how come he can afford a bigger counter.
