Chris you really must stop gazumping me like that. Some slightly more paranoid a person would assume you sit, watching like a hawk for my post to appear with your finger hovering over the 'publish blog' key.

I, however, realise I'm not that much of an influence.

So, anyhoo - when you do get read out will you also dance around the room, screaming and smiling like a deranged person?

Cus that is how you make many of us feel, some of us 4, 5, or even 6 times over.

Oh, but can you or somebody clarify if there are a certain number of name checks a person is allowed on radio 2?

i beleive the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is run as seperate business units for weach station/ channel and thats what counts - also I doubt Chris is employed by the Beeb - he probably has a contract brokered by his agent as a contractor

I had a request read out on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã World Service back in the 80s. I guess that's my one and only. The Beeb even sent me a postcard giving me the date and time range as to when the request was going to be read out. Made sure I didn't miss it.

I pay my licence fee to listen to professional presenters, not somebody telling me what they are going to have for their tea.

It's nice to have requests played - a sure fire way of getting to hear what you want to hear. I've had my gobsmackers read out (and Christmas Crackers - not enuff Dean Martin on the radio, IMHO!!!)

Also nice to have a request read out for someone else - lets them know you're thinking of them.

Would love to get on ARF but always driving home at phone-on time and no hands-free in the car.

I spend a large proportion of my time with people that seem to be constantly looking for something to complain about, and cannot bring themselves to acknowledge something that is all good. I'm sure you know people like that too. Sometimes its nice to share a little something that may make others not feel so alone in their unpleasant encounters of miserable minded folk.

I ALWAYS sit there waiting for a text to be read out, esp if it's something i've got a strong opinion on (wether it's valid or not it's still MY opinion)

HArking back to last night grub . . it's WASN'T let me repeat that WASN'T a ready meal it was just the cheapy version of cheap/normal/best versions of a supermarkets own brand.

Dunno what i'm having tonight as she who cooks doesn't know . .. . YET (pushing it abit late if ya ask me which i admit you didn't but i said it anyway)

Whatever it is will bound to be nice . . in 8 yrs she's only cooked up 3 (yes thats THREE) meals that were uneatable

Anyway my day went ok . . .apart from sitting in a yard for 2 1/2hrs whilst i got tipped today *sigh*

Got home early . . hence the blog. The weather in Notts has been pretty hit and miss heavy rain followed by bright sun followed by heavy rain (you get the pic) . . .. oh bum . . .. . forgot Chris was still on

I once rang into Radio 1 Andy Peebles show on a Sunday afternoon in the seventies or eighties and spoke to Sebastian Coe!! I definitely agree that some people like to be part of it all and some can't see the point.

A couple of years ago I was on the R2 programme Best British Group saying why I thought Queen should win and they did! They even beat the Beatles! Loads of people kept coming up to me and saying they had heard me but it was awful, I sounded a right Norfolk dumpling!

Glad to hear Susan and Cheryl got a mention, don't get much chance to listen these days.

We have nowhere safe to keep our money apart from a hole in the back garden or Ireland.

We must ditch our credit cards (if we have been able to obtain one in the first place) as fraud is at record levels.

If we do choose to keep our loot in the bank don't whatever you do use an online facility. Fraud up 185% year on year.

Your house is now worth less than you paid for it, and, in many cases, less than you owe the bank. The bank that hasn't got any money and is about to pop.

And, we have to sell our cars because they are environmental hand grenades on wheels and we can't afford to run them anyway. Except they are now worth less than the amount of fuel sitting in the tank.

The way things are going, I reckon we could be back in caves, sporting a nice line in designer furs and dragging our partners around by the hair, before too long. I'm talking about those of us who aren't already, of course.

I think this whole thing has just been slammed into reverse and is about to hit the wall.

Just read the comments about having your name read out on the radio.

A few years back when the kids were little we were in Convent Garden watching one of the street entertainers, old fashioned strongman type with shaven head, big moustache and an off the shoulder leopardskin leotard. Then the thing I dread most happened.

I was 'volunteered' to assist him in his act.

I just wanted the ground to open up, and this was before I realised that the chap was 70 if he was a day, smelt of booze, and was planning to juggle large knives over my prone body!

My rambling point is that some of us enjoy and indeed seek out attention, while some would rather die than bring attention to themselves.

This is all fine as long each group respects the view of the other.

Mind you the kids thought it was hilarious and never miss an opportunity to remind me of the look on my face as I lay there.

Ooooh I got sooooo ANGRY this morning!! So So ANGRY!!!! Why? Well, I watched Jamie Oliver's new tv show (mission/campaign?) and all the best of luck to Jamie, but GRRRRRRRR!!!

How can a woman with 2 children, ages 5 and 2, have never ever have cooked a meal for her children and feed them takeaway kebabs every night**?? Jamie was subjected to watching these two kids sitting on the floor, eating their dinner out of polystyrene boxes with their fingers.

And these are unemployed single mother's on benefits!

Hells Bells!!

I refuse to accept the argument "I can't cook", or "I dunno what to do" ... come on for gawd's sake - like the man said, it ain't rocket science!

Even if you can't afford to buy the best quality, organic meat or fish, the majority of supermarkets now cater for all budgets: from their own value ranges to free range, organic. Hell, they even portion the meat up for you.

"I've never touched raw meat before" - Ugh!! You're how old?????

And then, they say they can see an obese future for their children which worries them!!

One woman "dined" on 10 bags of crisps and a bar of chocolate every night - because she "don't know how to cook".

I sincerely wish Jamie Oliver the very best with this latest crusade - I think he's gonna need all the luck he can get.

** Yes, I know me and Mr Diva had a kebab delivered the other nighti, but it's once in a blue moon. Other than that we grow our own and cook from scratch every night of the week. After a hard day's work!

Diva you seem to have scared everyone off with that rant, I know what you mean though. I always thought it was more expensive to live on takeaways than cook from scratch, don't know if that's still the case, but I do remember when me and Mr Jumpy were struggling we hardly ever had takeaways simply because they were so expensive.

Now then... what was the blog on.... oh yes :) if you have anything to say :) I'm quite happy to be namechecked, but get me up in front of an audience to be a "volunteer"??? NO thankyou. I never sit in the front row, ever, just to make sure. Did get a mention once a few years ago on Richard A's saturday show, when Mr Jumpy decided it would be a good idea to remove an internal wall from our house while I was at work, and leave me to deal with the resultant mess.

Hmm. What else... oh yes :) It is a "he" for sure :)

on my birthday last year - my fella found an am dram production of whos panta was it anyway (a christmas whos line is it anyway) and got me name checked and bought onto the stage so they could sing to me.

Luckily I am a old ham and loved it - like I said I am fustrated actor/ presenter - just haven't got the nerve to pursure it - that and the mortgage! :-)

Oh dear, another rant against 'single mums on benefits'.

It is a question of education, and not just that provided by schools.

If you come from a family where nobody cooks then you see this as the norm and take this into your adult life and then your children see it as the norm and so the cycle continues.

In order to use the the large supermarkets and take advantage of the lower prices you have to have a car. This means they are not accessable to the poorest people who have to use smaller shops which are more expensive and have less choice.

Also, inevitably, it is a question of class.What if the person in question had been a lady of leisure who did not work because her husband earned millions and who had never touched raw meat because she had staff for that kind of thing and anyway they eat out most nights.

I could go on but it will get boring.

What is common sense and basic home economics to you IS rocket science to someone who has been brought up in the way the lady on last nights progam has.

Education is the only answer and if it does not come from the parents then it must come from the schools.

JO is aiming at the wrong generation. It is the kids that he should be teaching. As the Jesuits say 'Give me the child and I will give you back the man' ie get them young and it will stay with them the rest of their lives.

That is the only way of breaking the cycle.

Morning all - nice and sunny again here - so far anyway.

Diva I watched a smidge of Jamie on the plus one channel and was so incensed I turned it off!!! Tears tantrums not enough money and then promptly smokes a ciggy!??? at five squid or more a packet? grrrrrr.
And just for the record I had never cooked in my life before I lived on my own and started off with chops and cheesy spuds or sometimes just the cheesy spuds. Then a simple matter of purchasing M Patens cookery book and off I went! Bit by bit - step by step - obviously should have been a rocket scientist!

Major on line shopping spree ahead and yes I will pay it all off at the end of the month when the bill comes in!

I thought he hit a note of genius tho when he said about school classrooms and cookery rooms being empty after 4pm. What a waste - and yes, it is tax payers money.

I don't always like everything Jamie does, but I hope he succeeds on this latest mission.

It still baffles me how they can afford takeaways every night tho! We both work full time and a takeaway is considered a "treat" after a particularly hard day, or if we're celebrating but don't want to dine out.

I guess I'm one of the "lucky" ones, who was brought up with home cooking, and who paid attention in home economics (well, "food technology") classes.

I too hate raw meat but have had to learn to touch the stuff despite my revulsion.... We get our meat from the butchers these days, I can make a pound of meat last 3 days so it's not that expensive. And it means I can ask the butcher to dice everything for me... hurrah!

We had a takeaway treat the other night. It was GORGEOUS. I have to say the takeaways are becoming slightly more frequent these days...

Excited now, just got my website back online after being an idiot and forgetting to give the web hosts my updated billing details....

My point was it is not rocket science to people who have been educated, as I assume you have, and to those raised in an environment where cooking is a day to day activity.

Did you see your parents cooking?

A cook book can be daunting to someone who has poor reading skills.

But hey , you did it, so there can be no excuses for those no-good, feckless, benefit-scrounging single mums can there.

Ciao Tinsel, bon jiorno, come va? Did a holiday Italian class before summer. Mostly used: mi dispiace (I'm sorry), scusi (excuse me) grazie (thank you) stupendo (wonderful) and che bello (how lovely)! A little humility and charm goes a long way in Italy!

Didn't see the J O programme but I can see the problem from both sides, both TTT and CtD put forward very valid points. Having taught for years in a very deprived area with considerable social issues, (some "family" set-ups are too confusing and chaotic to be believed) I know that TTT speaks very good sense; however I can understand Ctd's frustration. Unfortunately the bleeding obvious is not always bleeding obvious to the people who need to see it.

Anyway, confession time... I just bought a bag of crisps. With me paper, as Thursday is 2 hours off in the middle of the day day. What smacked my gob was the price... 41 pee! for a bag of ready salted! Aargh - can remember when it was 2 and a half!

Another confession, I was seduced by the halloween section of ELH yesterday, as we have a party coming up. Pumpkin tinsel, black and orange cups, balloons and a concertina ghost. Oh and a pumpkin pinyata or however you say/spell it which I'm not entirely sure what to do with.

What is worse, as I skirted the rapidly growing Christmas "seasonal" aisle, I actually experienced a warm, Christmassy glow! On October 1st! haven't told anyone else though, so shhhhh.

I understand your point TTT re cooking and I think it was incredibly short sighted of the relevant government when they cut cookery lessons in schools - ditto sports and the selling of sports fields. Hence we have massively high rates of obesity in this country.

With regards to the woman lighting up - possibly the fags were got through 'tax free' means... smoking is sometimes the only positive in someone's life. I know non-smokers find that very hard to believe, it's sad but true. The woman had the b@lls to go on telly and own up to this AND have the will power to try and learn. Good luck to her I say. I just hope there's continuing support for when the telly peeps all go home.

Also, aren't his recipes a little expensively sited? Is there any help for these peeps to get cheap kitchen equipment - it must be extortionately expensive to set up from scratch.

OK, enough of the rant. I love it when the blog is challenging and interesting...

BTW I'm on day 32 of giving up smoking.

we came from a fmaily with little money and therfore my mum taught us all how to cook - i can do spag bol blindfolded - I didn't have a kebab until i was 18 and didn't eat in a chineese restaurant or indian until i was 20.

It does mean now - we can make meals of leftovers and I will be greatful to my mum for that!

home ecc at school was useless for me (mid nineties) - we learnt how to make pasty and bake bread from scratch - not that useful now I'm afraid

TTT my cookery book had pics!! and yes my mother was always cooking but I was a mad teenager charging about the place like there was no tomorrow! so never watched but always ate good food.

Hi guys

Just got in from a busy morning. Having a quiet cup of tea before I start preening and squeezing into interview clothes. It isn't until 2pm.

This interview is a proper one. The last guy told me just to turn up in jeans (I did but with smart blouse, jacket etc). This time it's a real, big, office complex.....eek!

Now my mum didn't enjoy cooking, it was all very basic, but we got by. Hence now, I don't know much about recipes and ingredients but I have a go.

Bagpuss I am now an absolute fiend with left overs and my freezer is full of little boxes/bags with "another couple and that will make a full meal"! Always cook too much for the two of us!! but just will not throw anything away!

yes, yes I have a bag of crips every day with my sarnie (usually marmite flavour). but only one bag a day. thats enuff.

Also, you have less rubbish if you cook wisely. Like most of the country, we get our bins empties fortnightly now. All the people who complain about the elf and safety aspect of fortnightly collections tend to fill their bins up within days of it being emptied with ...... ready meal packaging / drinks cartons etc.

Every fortnight, our bin is less than half full of domestic rubbish/food waste.

Blimey! Sorry gang. I seem to be wearing my soapbox out this morning!

We had rubbish cookery lessons when I was at school in the 70's, when it was still called cookery. We learned stuff like how to butter bread without it tearing, and how to cut a sandwich without the crusts coming away. There was one memorable lesson when we tried to make swiss rolls. Big mistake, but very funny!!

SBP, haven't bought any presents but I bought some chestnuts last night! For the stuffing. Blogging chefs/gardeners - will they keep till then? Or should I make the stuffing and freeze it? Or shall I just roast them on an open fire?

Well done Jen. I enjoy a couple of fags in the garden of an evening. Not many people know THAT either. But always wash me hands afterwards!

My mother was a teacher and it was around the time that convenience foods were taking over the world. So I was raised on: Smash, Colemans cook-in-sauces, Findus Crispy Pancakes, French Bread pizzas, Vesta curries and Mr Kipling cakes! In backlash I nearly always try and cook from scratch and bake my own cakes etc etc. Although I do occasionally sucumb to Auntie Bessie when yorkshires are required and I can't be a***d.

Diva confession: I always use A Bessies yorkie puds. Try as hard as I might, I just cannot do yorkshire puds. I wish I could. But I can't get them right. Roast spuds - no prob. Roast parsnips - easy peasy. But yorkie puds - fail every time!
