The biggest, baddest Branning comes to Walford

Post categories: ,Ìý

Matt Humphreys | 23:55 UK time, Thursday, 25 August 2011

"The fearsome Derek Branning, eldest son of Jim, has been a shadowy presence looming over the rest of the family for years..." - Bryan Kirkwood, EastEnders Executive Producer

"Out of all the Brannings, Derek is the one that most people fear. Although he can be charming he will be the one that can out alpha almost any man in Albert Square, maybe even Phil. He is going to cause a lot of disruption to his family" - An EastEnders Insider

Hmmm... sounds like Derek may not be blending in quietly to the Walford community... Jamie Foreman will play the new Branning bad boy.

Jamie Foreman

Ìý

On the casting, Bryan Kirkwood adds: "It's a real coup to sign Jamie Foreman to play the biggest, baddest Branning brother. Jamie has an incredible acting pedigree, having starred in some of the best British movies of recent times, and we can't wait for him to bring his unique talents to Walford."

On joining, Jamie said: "I am hugely excited to be joining such an iconic show. EastEnders is full of fantastic actors so it is a role I couldn't refuse. The Brannings are such a great family to be joining and I am extremely interested to see how Derek is going to fit in."

So are we! How will he rub up with the Square's bad boys? What will reigning-alpha Phil make of his competition in the hardman stakes? Will Michael attempt to scheme Derek into submission? Will his arrival tear the family apart or make them a force to be reckoned with?

We'll have to wait for his arrival this Winter to find out...

  • Comment number 5.

Has he been in Eastenders before? Or is he a new character altogether?
This annoys me though because they are introducing more new characters to me!!!
First the new Moons, then Mandy and now him. Slow down Eastenders!

    @sharif

Are you serious about Max and Tanya? They are simply horrible...then again I suppose being as bad as each other they belong together...

But they dont even think about their children, they are disgusting, especially Max. Tanya is just an idiot.

And why pick on Vanessa, she is who she is, whethyer you like her or not she didnt deserve the treatment she received from Max, the rotten creep that he is!

@clare he has been in it before in 1996 for 2 episodes played by Terence Beesley.

I'm very excited about seeing Derek Branning returning to Albert Square this winter. It's going to be very exciting to see Carol, Max, Jack and Derek on-screen at the same time. Looking forward to seeing what's in store for Derek and seeing if he gets on with his siblings, if he's still racist, what the future has in store for him, and if he'll clash with Phil. Roll on Derek Branning!

when David Wicks got Carol pregnant(baby was Bianca) when they were teenagers, Max, Jack & Derek beat him up. then in the mid 90's when Alan & Carol got married, the Brannings didn't like Alan because of his skin. So when they came back to Queen Vic for the reception, Derek was waiting for them outside their house(which is now Dot's house). He began taunting Alan and beat him up, then Derek got a tap on the shoulder and there was David Wicks who gave him a big punch in the face & told him never to show his face in Walford again.

What a coup. What a steal. Bryan Kirkwood, I love you. Please stay on for another two years at EastEnders.

I already knew the Branning family. My favourite family, I have studied them very well.

I really hope Derek has a secret son that no one knows about. Jamie Foreman is an amazing talent. Any actor would love to act with him.

Bryan, you are so talented yourself. You know what you doing and that is why the best actors want to work with you.

    Thank you Clarkster! :D

    Jim Branning.

    6 Children.
14 grandchildren (so far - don't rule out Derek and April just yet)
    6 great grandchildren (so far)

    That's why I love the Branning's!

  • Comment number 13.

vanessa is doing great on her part-she's the best new in the eastender...i love her!

  • Comment number 14.

WHY THE HEC ARE THEY BRINGING ALL THE UGLY GUYS INTO WALFAD. AND ALL THE FIT GUYS LEAVING. WE NEED MORE FIT GUYS!

  • Comment number 15.

Phill Mitchell has been getting to big now aday need someone to bring him ego down

  • Comment number 16.

All the EastEnders crew want now is to bring back Nasty Nick and then we'll have the full set of bad guys.

  • Comment number 17.

why does it matter what they look like? if youre trying to be realistic, not everybody would be attactive. i challenge you to find a london borough that has only attractive glamourous people as its resients. its ridicuolous to be so shallow, as to dismiss an interesting character because "they aint fit"

  • Comment number 18.

It says hes going to cause 'disruption to his family'. Havent they had enough already! Hopefully it will make it more exciting especially if he can challenge Phil!!! :)

  • Comment number 19.

@ Ruqayyahbesteva - stop being so shallow!
@ Irishswagger you are totally right.
Plus it's not like there are many fit girls in it anymore, especially now that Ronnie and Chelsea have gone but I don't care.

  • Comment number 20.

i love eastenders not matter what if they bring ugly ones in and if the fits ones going out maybe the ugly ones are much better than than the fits on at acting and i know its like 2011 but we need more people that old and look evil and all that but i think that EastEnders are getting good at their stories really and i will stick to EastEnders no matter if they get bad cause they are better than any soaps so i think what i think and i cant wait Derek Brannding to come bk cause i think it going to be one wicked story and i cant understand that people hate Tanya cause she got cancer n people so mean and say its her fault but its not even max Vanessa is the crazy one she wanna max to be hers and no one els well its her fault not max she been in EastaEnders For ages and she never fit in so i think i agree to the frist one who comment on this page but its up 2 u to disagree or agree cause im not changing my mind for noone

  • Comment number 21.

Can't wait for Derek to come to Walford, he looks like a proper bad boy although he's really old. We need some young bad boys.

  • Comment number 22.

wow, this looks exiting, the best yet!

  • Comment number 23.

He just looks evil from the pic, lol. I dont remember him in the earlier episodes but he will fit in well if he is a bad boy. Everyones mentioned him coming up against phil, but what about micheal, he's evil as well and they could bumpheads one or two times and that can only mean good viewing.

  • Comment number 24.

Oh and we could also see a boxing theme coming out of this one with Phil, Micheal, jack and Derek all involved in it allready due to Phils intrest in Jays boxing and micheal and Jack's running of the club and then dereks dad Jim being a retired boxer, the list continues, so they will propably bo a storyline with boxing i think.

  • Comment number 25.

    @leecy

Max and Tanya are meant to be together their stories are always interesting and they are made for Eastenders.
As for Vanessa has she got any clothes that are not white! That bush of hair whats going on there atleast Tanya has class

  • Comment number 26.

So, Jamie Foreman.. the son of Freddie Foreman a henchman of the Krays and one of London's most well known and prolific killers, is coming to play a 'baddie'' on Eastenders. Well He won't have to look any further than his family for inspiration will he? Wonder how this c list mediocre actor managed to get a major part in the country's top soap...hmmmm?

  • Comment number 27.

hopefully he will get max and tanya back together or he could even tear them apartx

  • Comment number 28.

no continuity Derek Branning has been in eastenders before and if i remember rightly was a bully who turned out to be a wimp. he got beat up by David Wicks of all people. so how this character is supposed to out alpha phil mitchell i do not know.

  • Comment number 29.

@dopeydora don't label Jamie Foreman because of his father he is not c list either.
Jamie Foreman (born 1958) is an English actor best known for his roles as Duke in Layer Cake (2004) and Bill Sikes in Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist (2005). He played opposite Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke in Gary Oldman's Nil by Mouth (1997) and also featured in Elizabeth (1998), Gangster No. 1 (2000) and Sleepy Hollow (1999). He appeared in the 2006 Doctor Who episode "The Idiot's Lantern". He also featured as a racist taxi driver in The Football Factory (2004). Foreman also played Basta in the film Inkheart (2008). He also appeared in one episode of Law and Order: UK in 2009 and EastEnders in 1991 as a contractor.

  • Comment number 30.

i could imagine the brannings teaming up to bully Phil for a while but then bring back Grant to bring them all to order as he is the more believable hard man

  • Comment number 31.

Just suppose Shirley finds out about Phil and Rainie's little romantic interlude?... Is it possible that Shirley may eventually find love and comfort in the arms of a Branning man?... Hang on. Let me check with my Crystal Ball... I see a short dark man... does the name Derek mean anything?... I can see plenty of trouble between this man and Phil... Well, what do you think?

  • Comment number 32.

@Clare Mandy was part of the cast many years ago as a young teenager - 17 years ago according to one news clip. Frankly, I'm rather jealous at how little her appearance has changed! LOL Of course her character is pretty much the same as well.

@richardmcgill24 True, but he (Derek) has had a couple of decades to hone those bullying, bad guy skills. Plus with Alan standing there too it could have been construed as two against one, iykwim. ;-)
