Best Director - Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham)
Best Supporting Actor - ??? (guess later)
Best Animation - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - ??? (guess later)
Best Screenplay - Etienne Comar (Of Gods and Men)

    Fellowship Award - William Friedkin?

These are my initial predictions, will fill in blanks later

  • Comment number 2.

    For the Kermodes:
Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Screenplay - Made in Dagenham
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins - Made in Dagenham
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Best Animated Film - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential

If I was doing an award ceremony for films not nominated for the Oscars I would choose:
    Best Picture - Kick-Ass
Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Actor - Ryan Reynolds - Buried
Best Actress - Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit (nominated at the Oscars but in the wrong category)
Best Supporting Actor - Justin Timberlake - The Social Network
Best Supporting Actress - Chloe Grace Moretz - Kick-Ass
Best Animated Film - A Town Called Panic
Best Original Screenplay - Four Lions
    Best Adapted Screenplay - Kick-Ass
Best Music - Scott Pilgrim vs The World

  • Comment number 3.

My thoughts in regards to the much unrecognised Kermode awards.

Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Actress - Natalie Portman - Black Swan
Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale - The Fighter
Best Animated Film - Toy Story 3
Best Screenplay - David Seidler - The Kings Speech
    Best Documentary - Inside Job

  • Comment number 4.

Best Director - Chris Nolan for Inception
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham
Best Supporting Actor - John Hawkes for Winter's Bone
Best Animation - Toy Story 3
    Best Documentary - Restrepo

Drawing a blank on best screenplay.

I personally (desperately) want Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It would acknowledge the power and importance of that trilogy and would give it extra clout being the first ever animated Best Picture winner!

The main rule 'You can't win an award for a category that you have been nominated for at the oscars'.

Oh and categories I couldn't think of
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield (Social Network)
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential

  • Comment number 6.

    @ Diarmaid Hanly

Yeah, it was my favourite film of 2010 as well. I just recently watched a couple of YouTube critics saying Toy Story 3 has no place in Best Film because it has its own special category - which really annoyed me, because a film using a different medium shouldn't necessarily have to be confined to a different category.

I mean, I can see a case for Documentary being cordoned off because it's an attempt to record real life, but I could be persuaded away from that position.

What do you think? Are some of these separate categories a way to recognise the unique qualities of different forms of filmmaking? Or a way for the elites in the Academy to suppress different art forms?

  • Comment number 7.

    Okay, here we go...

Best Director - Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham)
Best Supporting Actor - Matt Damon (True Grit)
Best Animation - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential (Julian Temple)
Best Screenplay - Etienne Comar (Of Gods and Men)

Fellowship Award - William (Billy, to you Dr K) Friedkin

...close or am I wearing egg?

  • Comment number 8.

"...and the Kermode Fellowship Award goes to, Terence Davies"

    (I expect)

  • Comment number 9.

Completely agree with Post 7, came up with same ideas before I even read the comments.

    Best Director - Christopher Nolan
    Best Actress - Sally Hawkins
Best Supporting Actor - Matt Damon
Best Animation - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential
Best Screenplay - Of Gods and Men

Fellowship - Well it's surely about time Mr. Friedkin got what's coming to him.

  • Comment number 10.

Yes, I agree with others on a lot of the Kermode Awards:
Best Director - Christopher Nolan (without a shadow of a doubt!)
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham
Best Supporting Actor - Matt Damon for True Grit or possibly John Hawkes for Winter's Bone
Best Animation - Chico & Rita but you did love Toy Story 3, then again you may want to be different?(argh! I don't know!)
    Best Documentary - Restrepo
Best Screenplay - The Social Network

  • Comment number 11.

this guy didn't follow the Kermode Code Of Conduct...Sad.

  • Comment number 12.

And once again you WON'T be able to watch the Oscars if you rely on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã, as they don't have the rights, for something like the 8th year in a row.

  • Comment number 13.

Hmm... Fellowship award: George Lucas. Without him, Pixar wouldn't exist, without Pixar, the Doc's beloved Toy Story 3 wouldn't exist.

Oh, and the Doc doesn't mind the "...dark, weird and menacing" (Radio 1, spring '99) The Empire Strikes Back, either.

  • Comment number 14.

Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
    Best Screenplay - Inception
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins - Made in Dagenham
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Best Animated Film - Toy Story 3
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential

  • Comment number 15.

Hey, Doc, this might interest you:

  • Comment number 16.

Best Director - Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins (Made In Dagenham)
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield (The Social Network)
Best Animation - Chico & Rita
    Best Documentry - The Arbor
Best Screenplay - Of Gods & Men
Best Picture - Made In Dagenham

  • Comment number 17.

Sorry, but I just wanted to remind people of the only rule in the Kermode:

You can't win a Kermode in a Category in which you have been Oscar nominated

  • Comment number 18.

If McG doesn't win best director I'll eat my hat (not a binding promise).

  • Comment number 19.

    Best Director: Christoper Nolan. Duh!

Best Animated: Chico and Rita. I am not sure if it's had a US release and therefore not nominated for Oscar for that reason but I wouldn't put it past Kermode to flout his own rules and pick it anyway. (antimode's pick: antimode doesnt watch animated features)

Best Actress: Hailee Steinfeld (antimode's pick: Noomi Rapace)

Best Documentary: Is Kermode going to pull another fast one (like above) and claim 127 hours was a documentary?? (antimode's pick: The Art of the Steal)

Best Supporting Actor: Andrew Garfield (antimode's pick: MAaaaa Daamoh)

Best Screenplay: I'll take a punt on Made in Dagenham. You know it's going to feature in the Kermodes somewhere. (antimode: Girl with Dragon Tat)

    Kermode Fellowship: Terence Davies
but it could be any of the Usual Suspects: David Lynch, Guillermo Del Toro, Bill Forsyth, Werner Herzog or maybe new buddy Oliver Stone (Terry Gilliam, Ken Russell already recognized). Trillion to 1 outsider: Danny Dyer

  • Comment number 20.

    Best Director - Don't Care
    Best Screenplay - Don't Care
    Best Actress - Don't Care
Best Supporting Actor - Don't Care
Best Animated Film - Don't Care
    Best Documentary - Don't Care

I hate award seasons, I've never watched any, and I don't plan to this year or in the future. I don't see the point of back slapping shows, they don't prove anything, I won't watch the a lot of the so called award winning movies, and the Kermode awards is another pointless consolation prize for losers.

  • Comment number 21.

    Best Director - Christopher Nolan
    Best Actress - Sally Hawkins
Best Supporting Actor - Matt Damon
Best Animation - Chico & Rita
Best Documentry - Restrepo (I was disappointed by that one, but these are the Kermodes).
    Best Screenplay - Darren Aronofsky
Fellowship - Emma Thompson... Or Michael Caine... No, Emma. Yes. Emma. These are people who have just made a significant contribution to film, right?

  • Comment number 22.

Best Director - Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham)/Lesley Manville (Another Year) its too close to call
Best Supporting Actor - Matt Damon (True Grit)
Best Animation - Chico and Rita
    Best Documentary - Restrepo
Best Screenplay - Etienne Comar (Of Gods and Men)

Fellowship Award - I like the idea of William Friedkin but I've got a feeling you're going to give it to Mike Leigh....either would be awesome guests

Even though its not in there, the winner of a Best Film category would surely go to Uncle Boonmee. I adored that film

  • Comment number 23.

Best Director = Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress = Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit)
Best Supporting Actor = Bryan Barter (Social Network)

Best Screenplay = Made in Dagenham

Best Costume Design = The Tempest

  • Comment number 25.

Stuart Yates why did you come to this page?
I don't think any of us really care, its just interesting, its not important.

But Anyway Kermode err i think you missed out predicting best supporting actor categories???

Anyway i think the Oscars will be this:
    Best film: Kings Speech
    Best director: david fincher
    best actor: colin firth
    best actress: natalie portman
    best supporting actor: christian bale
    best supporting actress: melisso leo
best original screenplay: david seidler, kings speech
best adapted screenplay: aaron sorkin, social network
    best score: social network

I for one think the Kermodes are harder this year because alot of the good stuff had been nominated, of course with a few exceptions.

    Best Director - Danny Boyle
    Best Actress - Hailee Steinfeld
Best Supporting Actor - ANDREW GARFIELD (Surely?)
Best Animation - Chico and Rita (cos I know thats what it is)
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential
    Best Screenplay - ermmmm.....

  • Comment number 26.

    My Kermode predictions:

Best Director: Christopher Nolan for Inception.

Best Actress: Natalie Portman for Black Swan

Best Supporting Actor: Matt Damon for True Grit

Best Animation: Chico and Rita (Even though it should be Toy Story 3)

    Best Documentary: The Arbor

    Best Screenplay: Social Network

  • Comment number 27.

    Kermode Award predictions:

    Best Director: Christopher Nolan, Inception
Best Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Best Supporting Actor: Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
    Best Animation: Chico and Rita
    Best Documentary: The Arbor
    Best Screenplay: Made in Dagenham

  • Comment number 28.

I think STARMAN 2 would be a good film. I have an idea of a script for it about how an alienwith advanced technology and medical knowledge comes to Earth and helps people.

  • Comment number 29.

Best Director - Chrisopher Nolan - Inception
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins - Made In Dagenham
Best Animation - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - The thing with the taps on fire (Or whatever that blummin' film was called)

Fellowship Award... Jeremy Dylan for his complete insanity in making a film out of his own back pocket on an in joke on a radio show in a completely different country.

    Fair play to the man.

  • Comment number 30.

I'm with Tomplym24's estimation of your choices, with ONE exception:

Best Director = Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress = Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit)
Best Supporting Actor = Bryan Barter (Social Network)
Best Animation = Chico and Rita
Best documentary = THE TILLMAN STORY
Best Screenplay = Made in Dagenham

  • Comment number 31.

Since "Of Gods and Men" is only getting a limited USA release from this weekend, that probably explains why it's not up for an Oscar this year. There's still 2012 ...

  • Comment number 32.

Could I just ask why these are the only awards being given out this year? No Kermode for best picture or best actor etc? Anyway:

Best Director = Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actress = Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham)
Best Supporting Actor = Andrew Garfield (Social Network)
Best Animation = Chico and Rita
    Best documentary = The Arbor
Best Screenplay = Of Gods and Men - hardest one to call honourable mentions go to Made in Dagenham, Kick Ass and Buried (my personal winner)

Fellowship - toss up between Friedkin and Danny Dyer?

  • Comment number 33.

Have a spare 10 minutes? Have a quick fumble around with this... it's educational don't you know!

  • Comment number 34.

    20 @stuart yates

Whilst I entirely agree with you regarding Globes, BAFTA's and that golden fella' with the bald head, I don't feel the same way about the Kermodes -they're just a bit of good natured fun right... right?

  • Comment number 35.

As the Kermode's require that the nominees have not also been Oscar nominated this year:

Best Film = Of gods and men
Best Director = Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actor = John Hawkes (Winters Bone)
Best Actress = Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)
Best Supporting Actor = Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom)
Best Screenplay = Etienne Comar (Of Gods and Men)

  • Comment number 36.

Best Director = Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Actress = Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit
Best Supporting Actor = Andrew Garfield - Social Network
Best Animation = Toy Story 3
Best documentary = The Arbor or Oil City Confidential
Best Screenplay = The Social Network

Fellowship - Would it be too bold to suggest Dario Argento? I think Dr K's love of Black Swan considerably rooted in the idea that the films shows Argento's influence to have finally penetrated the mainstream.

  • Comment number 37.

    Edit: (Apologies for the double-post)

    Kermode Fellowship: Wally Pfister

  • Comment number 38.

Those upcoming Kermode Award winners in full:

Best director - Christopher Nolan (obviously)
    Best actress - Sally Hawkins
Best supporting actor - Andrew Garfield
Best animation - Chico & Rita (obviously)
    Best documentary - The Arbor
Best screenplay - Of Gods and Men

Pretty sure about a couple of those (guess which ones). But the rest are anyone's guess.

Has Kermode given a Fellowship award to Terence Davies yet?

  • Comment number 39.

    36 @Frunobulax

Wow, Argento! Wouldn't that be great. Still love his older stuff but that man should've 'done-a-Carpenter' and disappeared for a decade in order to pull himself together. He's not made a single film (worth a damn since Opera (1987). Dracula 3D (2012) is up next. Why?

Black Swan does indeed owe a considerably debt to classic Argento motifs and style but it still holds it's own as a terrific piece of film making. Loved it.

  • Comment number 40.

Best Director = Christopher Nolan (Inception)
Best Actor = Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
Best Actress = Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
Best Supporting Actor = Christian Bale (The Fighter)
Best Supporting Actress = Helena Bonham Carter (The King's Speech)
Best Animation = Toy Story 3
    Best Documentary = Inside Job
Best Original Screenplay = David Seidler (The King's Speech)
Best Adapted Screenplay = Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network)

  • Comment number 41.

Best Director = Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Actress = Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit
Best Actor = Jeff Bridges - True Grit (Kings speech is good but this make syou forget John Wayne did this role before)
Best Supporting Actor = Christian Bale - the Fighter (I know Kermode does not rate the film but Bale is very good as is Wahlberg)
Best Supporting Actress = Barbara Hershey - Black Swan (truely mad)
Best Animation = Toy Story 3
Best documentary = Oil City Confidential
    Best Original Screenplay = Inception
Best Adapted Screenplay = Kick Ass (Jane Goldman script is immense)
Some aree not applicable I know but.......

  • Comment number 42.

I'm pretty sure I can guess 4 out of 6 at the Kermodes:
    Director - Nolan
Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield, "The Social Network"
    Animation - "Chico and Rita"
    Documentary - "Oil City Confidential"

I'm not so confident about the other two, but I'm pretty sure one of them will go to "Made in Dagenham". So...
    Best Actress - Sally Hawkins
    Screenplay - err... "Black Swan"

  • Comment number 43.

    For the Kermodes:

Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
Best Screenplay - Made in Dagenham
Best Actress - Sally Hawkins - Made in Dagenham
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Best Animated Film - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - Oil City Confidential

Best Supporting Actor: Andrew Garfield (Social Network)
    Best Animation: Chico and Rita

Director: Christopher Nolan (to all those who have predicted something different, Dr K's being going on about how it's a travesty he wasn't nominated for an oscar so he's obviously going to win the Kermode)
Actress: Sally Hawkins (not sure I agree, I'd probably go for Hailee Steinfeld but does the fact she's nominated for the supporting actress oscar rule her out)
Supporting Actor: Andrew Garfield (again, Dr K's been going on about how he should've been nominated for an oscar, so if you predicted someone else you clearly haven't been paying attention)
Animation: Chico & Rita (I know he loved Toy Story 3 but it's nominated for the oscar so it can't win the Kermode)
Documentary: Oil City Confidential (Restrepo might be in with a shot but remembering how much Kermode gushed over OCC when it was released, I think it's unlikely)
Screenplay: Of Gods And Men (I actually haven't got a clue with this one but enough people have predicted this that I'll just have to go along with them)

  • Comment number 52.

Sorry, meant to say The Arbor was in with a shot for Documentary, not Restrepo.

  • Comment number 53.

    KERMODE'S.

Often around Oscar time, I reminisce on a superior ten-year stretch of English-language filmmaking (arguably of music, too, but that's for another time). The decade arrived with the groundbreaking Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and then veered out of Earth's atmosphere with Star Wars (1977), after which followed a lot of light years of breaking less ground while busting more blocks. Certainly Hollywood productions took a less than stellar turn for the worse, but so did most of pop Culture during the Ray-gun Reign of Clueless Consumerism.

Now when my husband, JT Lindroos, posted his List of Five on his blog a bit ago and asked my input, I reminded him best-of list winnowing is an unwelcome exercise for me. It's like comparing popcorn to paté until separated into subcategories at minimum. Even within a sufficiently limited genre, it's often a matter of my mutable mood that might create a somewhat different list on another day.

However, restricting a five faves list to that one singular decade helps me a lot. And then if I narrow it even further into alphabetized titles, I finally stumble on a subcategory of movies to serve up a rock solid List of Five for me. So, among all C-titled, English-language films released 1967-1977, my Cream of that finite Crop:

    1. Chinatown
    2. The Conversation
    3. A Clockwork Orange
    4. Cool Hand Luke
    5. Charley Varrick

In case any of the above are unable to fulfill their duties, here are my runners-up in C-titled, English-language films released 1967-1977 (this list in alphabetical order):

    Cabaret
    Carrie
    Catch-22
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Cockfighter

There are also these Choice C-titled [as translated in English] foreign-language films released 1967-1977:

    The Conformist
    Closely Watched Trains
    Cries and Whispers

And you must remember this (because who can forget), the Consummate C-titled films of any decade:

    Casablanca
    Citizen Kane
    City Lights
    Children of Paradise

So C is clearly for Choice, Cultured, Cream of the Crop, Consummate Cinema. It's also for Curious: Is there any other initial title letter that fares as well in filing away this level of movie Classics? Will anyone rise to the Challenge?

  • Comment number 55.

    For the Kermodes:
Best Director - Christopher Nolan - Inception
    Best Screenplay - Inception
Best Actress - Natilie Portman-The Black Swan
Best Supporting Actor -Matt Damon-True Grit
Best Animated Film - Chico and Rita
Best Documentary - The Arbor or the 'money' one from last week.

  • Comment number 56.

    @Kat330

C is for contrived, concocted, cockamamie and crackpot ;-)

  • Comment number 57.

If nothing else surely the best documentary has to go to Oil City Confidential by Julian Temple. A real Tour de Force covering just about every emotion and a terrific cinematic experience.

  • Comment number 58.

Best supporting actor - The Catfish in Uncle Boonmee.

  • Comment number 59.

I've popped my barrage of white hot oscar opinion on my Multiplex Slut blog, here:

Suffice to say here that I want Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture...

  • Comment number 60.

Nice list kat330 -- happy to see more obscure stuff there, like Charley Varrick and Cockfighter!

I'm sure Kermode's list would be one of E's, for obvious reasons, with Exorcist, Eraserhead.... uh, Electra Glide in Blue? Elmer Gantry?! And maybe The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. NOT Enter the Dragon.

Unlike antimode, I think it's an entertaining, earbending, excellent and engaging exercise for the moviebrain muscles.

  • Comment number 61.

    @antimode

Say, thanks for the warm welcome to the new kid on the blog, A-mode. What a mensch!

Actually, C is for the cojones to come up with your own best decade of film, or C-titled movies released 1967-1977. If not here, then in a more appropriate forum of your choice.

(If you persevere in fanning lame flame, you only make ash of yourself, so I'll refrain from adding that A is for arrogant, annoying, attacking, asinine and addled. ;)

How silly of me, surely best supporting actor will go to Jason Issacs, Skeletons was such a great film, and he was absolutely splendid!

    Dear Mr. Kermode,

I am interested to know whether you have ever delved into the betting market concerning award ceremonies?

Obviously some of your predictions are completely unbackable due to their incredibly short odds - Firth is 1/50, Toy Story at 1/60 and Portman at 1/9 for example. However, there are some prices that look more inviting. It's obviously a difficult market to bet on as you've got to try and approach it with some sort of objectivity...but here are the bets I have placed, for your amusement (or maybe boredom).

(PS. I'm 23 and not blessed in the bank balance dept, hence the relatively low stakes!)

    Main bet:
David Fincher (Best Director) : £9 @ 4-6 (this is a brilliant price in my opinion, if I were rich I'd be punting heavily, and I'm not usually one for odds-on betting)

    Other bets:
    Hailee Steinfield (Supporting Actress) : £4 @ 100-30
    Inception (cinematography) : £3 @ 11-2
    Restrepo (Best Doc.) : £1.50 @ 8-1

    and...

    RAZZIES:
Sex and the City 2 (Worst Picture) : £2 @ 4-1 (not joking)

There is also a bet where you can back whether Colin Firth will deliver his winning Best Actor speech in the stuttering manner of George VI. 4-6 is the offer. Maybe have a word with him and then place £60,000 for a 100K return?! 10% commission please....

Loving the Cut & Paste predictions, everyone agrees with post 1 - hilarious. Kristin Scott Thomas for Best Actress (Leaving): I'll bet any takers £100...
