Best Actor - Ryan Reynolds - Buried
Best Actress - Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit (nominated at the Oscars but in the wrong category)
Best Supporting Actor - Justin Timberlake - The Social Network

Drawing a blank on best screenplay.
I personally (desperately) want Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It would acknowledge the power and importance of that trilogy and would give it extra clout being the first ever animated Best Picture winner!

Yeah, it was my favourite film of 2010 as well. I just recently watched a couple of YouTube critics saying Toy Story 3 has no place in Best Film because it has its own special category - which really annoyed me, because a film using a different medium shouldn't necessarily have to be confined to a different category.
I mean, I can see a case for Documentary being cordoned off because it's an attempt to record real life, but I could be persuaded away from that position.
What do you think? Are some of these separate categories a way to recognise the unique qualities of different forms of filmmaking? Or a way for the elites in the Academy to suppress different art forms?

At 24th Feb 2011, Kat330 wrote:Often around Oscar time, I reminisce on a superior ten-year stretch of English-language filmmaking (arguably of music, too, but that's for another time). The decade arrived with the groundbreaking Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and then veered out of Earth's atmosphere with Star Wars (1977), after which followed a lot of light years of breaking less ground while busting more blocks. Certainly Hollywood productions took a less than stellar turn for the worse, but so did most of pop Culture during the Ray-gun Reign of Clueless Consumerism.
Now when my husband, JT Lindroos, posted his List of Five on his blog a bit ago and asked my input, I reminded him best-of list winnowing is an unwelcome exercise for me. It's like comparing popcorn to paté until separated into subcategories at minimum. Even within a sufficiently limited genre, it's often a matter of my mutable mood that might create a somewhat different list on another day.
However, restricting a five faves list to that one singular decade helps me a lot. And then if I narrow it even further into alphabetized titles, I finally stumble on a subcategory of movies to serve up a rock solid List of Five for me. So, among all C-titled, English-language films released 1967-1977, my Cream of that finite Crop:
1. Chinatown
2. The Conversation
3. A Clockwork Orange
4. Cool Hand Luke
5. Charley Varrick
In case any of the above are unable to fulfill their duties, here are my runners-up in C-titled, English-language films released 1967-1977 (this list in alphabetical order):
Cabaret
Carrie
Catch-22
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Cockfighter
There are also these Choice C-titled [as translated in English] foreign-language films released 1967-1977:
The Conformist
Closely Watched Trains
Cries and Whispers
And you must remember this (because who can forget), the Consummate C-titled films of any decade:
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
City Lights
Children of Paradise
So C is clearly for Choice, Cultured, Cream of the Crop, Consummate Cinema. It's also for Curious: Is there any other initial title letter that fares as well in filing away this level of movie Classics? Will anyone rise to the Challenge?

I'm sure Kermode's list would be one of E's, for obvious reasons, with Exorcist, Eraserhead.... uh, Electra Glide in Blue? Elmer Gantry?! And maybe The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. NOT Enter the Dragon.
Unlike antimode, I think it's an entertaining, earbending, excellent and engaging exercise for the moviebrain muscles.

Say, thanks for the warm welcome to the new kid on the blog, A-mode. What a mensch!
Actually, C is for the cojones to come up with your own best decade of film, or C-titled movies released 1967-1977. If not here, then in a more appropriate forum of your choice.
(If you persevere in fanning lame flame, you only make ash of yourself, so I'll refrain from adding that A is for arrogant, annoying, attacking, asinine and addled. ;)

I am interested to know whether you have ever delved into the betting market concerning award ceremonies?
Obviously some of your predictions are completely unbackable due to their incredibly short odds - Firth is 1/50, Toy Story at 1/60 and Portman at 1/9 for example. However, there are some prices that look more inviting. It's obviously a difficult market to bet on as you've got to try and approach it with some sort of objectivity...but here are the bets I have placed, for your amusement (or maybe boredom).
(PS. I'm 23 and not blessed in the bank balance dept, hence the relatively low stakes!)
Main bet:
David Fincher (Best Director) : £9 @ 4-6 (this is a brilliant price in my opinion, if I were rich I'd be punting heavily, and I'm not usually one for odds-on betting)
Other bets:
Hailee Steinfield (Supporting Actress) : £4 @ 100-30
Inception (cinematography) : £3 @ 11-2
Restrepo (Best Doc.) : £1.50 @ 8-1
and...
RAZZIES:
Sex and the City 2 (Worst Picture) : £2 @ 4-1 (not joking)
There is also a bet where you can back whether Colin Firth will deliver his winning Best Actor speech in the stuttering manner of George VI. 4-6 is the offer. Maybe have a word with him and then place £60,000 for a 100K return?! 10% commission please....
