Many people suggested The Dark knight Rises but i think it will get a Best Picture nod if only because Christopher Nolan dragged the Hollywood blockbuster back into the adult arena. A Royal Affair looks like Oscar bait and i think has a good chance of being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film although i think Untouchable will walk it. The real wild card is The Master, opinion could go either way, a few acting nominations maybe. Best Documentary is where i believe we'll see the biggest howlers, out of Searching for Sugarman, Nostalgia for the Light, The Imposter and Planet of Snail i think "Sugarman" has the best shot but as we've seen in past years you can always rely on Oscar to let you down. Denis Lavant in Holy Motors gives the best male performance of the year but won't get a look and as said already Killer Joe has no chance.

Best Film: The Raid (still my favourite of the year), Headhunters, Ruby Sparks, Killer Joe and End Of Watch.

Best Director: William Friedkin for Killer Joe, Gareth Evans for The Raid, Paul Thomas Anderson for The Master, Wes Anderson for Moonrise Kingdom and Joss Whedon for The Avengers.
Best Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal for End of Watch, Michael Pena for End of Watch, Matthew McConaughey for Killer Joe, Jack Black for Bernie and Garrett Hedlund for On The Road.
Best Doc: The Imposter

Forgive me if I say things that other people might have said (but this is my first comment ever and I rarely have time too see films these days in cinemas), but I'm surprised you haven't mentioned some other could be contendors for your awards:

Best Director: Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight Rises. I think he should be a contendor for the award becuase I don't think the Oscars have ever nominated a director for directing a comic book adaptation (look at films like Road to Perdition, A History of Violence and The Dark Knight, all have been nominated for Oscars and awarded...though non of them for Best Director). But this is also due too him for directing a smart, gritty and one of the best films of 2012.

Best Supporting Actor: Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises. I think could be taken into consideration as he managed to mentally disturb me through the use of his eyes in that film and his voice (I didn't have any problem with hearing what he said).

Best Actress: Kara Hayward in Moonrise Kingdom. I realise this film may not be everyone's cup of tea, but she was fantastic and I believe she pulled off one of the best peformances of this year, and only being aged 14 in a film that was sweet, and will definatley be snubbed at the Oscars.

Sorry sorry sorry, I forgot too add one last potential nomination for best film, though I think most people will disagree with me:

Best Film: Ted. This film had me, my friend and everyone in the cinema screen laughing from start too finish. I laughed so much I had tears coming from my eyes and had difficulty breathing. Definatley the funniest film of the year (in my books anyway).

Like I said, I don't think many of you will agree, but...why not eh? :)

I'm ashamed to say I only discovered Laibach because of the Iron Sky trailer, but once I did, wow. Yeah, great band, and great work they've done for the soundtrack. If they do win a Kermode for it I'd be very happy.

One quibble though. Laibach's modus operandi is to take someone else's music and transmogrify it with their parodic (or is it?) utopian collectivist style. B Mashina (the trailer song) is originally from Slovenian band Siddharta, and "Under an Iron Sky", while written for the film, seems to have been reworked by Laibach from the Kaiti Kink Ensemble original.

That quibble aside, yes, Laibach for the Kermode! I should have suggested that myself in the previous thread.

i like 'barbarian sound studio' for it's apparent ability to discuss sides of fandom for gialli that are both surprisingly accurate (great application of both sound and image to other-worldly effect) and kind of off-the-mark in how it's often treated in an ironic, kitsch, naff and unintentionally funny manner. personally quite angered by the laughter i heard at the screening i went to - apparently intended to let the entire audience know how they'd understood it correctly, rather than accepting there were various flaws and inherent characteristics that often remain hard to grasp due to cultural and historical distances.

Even with the Kermode Awards on call, the Oscars is mostly likely going to follow the same kind of course as it did in the past few years. In other words, they won't pick The Hobbit and The Dark Knight Rises for more higher-level awards like Best Picture and Best Actor so to speak. Like usual, it is often they pick such films in the technical (underlooked) division of categories than artistic.

More likely, Les Miserables, Hitchcock (which looks promising), Argo, and Lincoln will have top-spot in their categories. Some films that have potential but garnered a mixed reaction or haven't caught the attention of the Academy might include: Cloud Atlas, Hyde Park in Hudson, and The Master.

These are all based on predictions and the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards/Oscars, the BAFTAs, and even the Critic's Choice Awards have shown to be similar in what they pick that it is no wonder why the viewership ratings were getting lower-and-lower. It is almost like as if people feel it is too predictable and they would rather see Twilight: Breaking Dawn- Part 2 win for an MTV Movie Award for 2013.

I am an avid listener of your Radio 5 show, a big fan of yours (as are all my family), and have been for years. I rarely feel compelled (i.e. basically never) to write in and have no idea whether you read such messages, or whether it will get past the gatekeepers, but on the back of last week's show I would just like to say that I very much hope there will be another 10 or 20 years of Wittertainment.

I also think that you might consider whether a managed transition to a new partnership would be a good idea. I thought Al Murray's stewardship of the show was first rate, he has a light touch, is a cheerful presence and clearly cares deeply about cinema. He also was quite discriminating (in a good way) as to incorporating readers emails/tweets and the like which can get quite irritating.

I regularly also listen to the Guardian Film Show and think it is brilliant. Peter Bradshaw and Catherine Shoard are great but what I like about it most is that it does not feel it has to speak to the common lowest denominator. And neither should you. I thought your elegiac take on Holy Motors was fantastic and I am sure it was appreciated by the listenership at large. Please don't think you have to bow to the Sky Sports variant of public broadcasting standards. We want to be challenged, we want to be transported beyond the mundanities of our everyday existence at 4pm on a Friday afternoon. At least that's a large part of why I tune in. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Berberian Sound Studio for Best Soundtrack and Art Direction. I love the way Broadcasts soundscapes creep and build throughout this film and the moment when Toby Jones' character Gilderoy is sitting playing with the actresses voice nearly had me in tears knowing of course that the voice is actually that of Broadcast singer Trish Keenan who sadly passed away before work on the movie was completed.
Julian House's graphic design work also permeates every facette of this movie from the Berberian letter headers to Gilderoy's tape covers not only that but the inclusion of House's hand drawn stained breakdowns of the folly work on the film within the film actually propel the plot forwards and create the feeling that a lot of time is actually passing even though we rarely see anything more than three or four people in the same room.

*SPOILER ALERT* Toby Jones should also get Best Actor for the greatest portrayal of middle-aged madness brought on by matricide since Norman Bates. *SPOILER ALERT*

Just to add to what "tom_dublin" said. Simon is very good at what he does - but no-one is irreplaceable. (Who could have imagined HIGNFY without Angus?)

Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom and The Master are the best films I have seen this year.

Overall, it hasn't been a good film year. The list of great films made in 2012 can be counted on one hand. Well, one hand with a few fingers missing. And no thumb.

For best unrecognised Oscar film of the year (assuming The Master gets the recognition it deserves), I can't look past Andrew Dominik for Killing Them Softly. It's unabashedly anti-american, mysoginistic, darkly satirical and downright deplorable in every way. Expect to see it snubbed in pretty much every category it should be AT LEAST nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Supporting Actor (Ben Mendelsohn), Best Cinematography (Greig Fraser) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

You talk a lot about Roger Deakins, Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig in regard to Skyfall potentially bringing in awards, and they are all indeed worthy, but my call is Judi Dench for Best Supporting Actress. I never thought I'd say that regarding a Bond film, but she gives a brilliant, much deeper exploration of the M character than we've ever seen before.

I have to say I always enjoy reading through these lists as it always points out to me the films I've missed that I need to catch-up on, and the ones that I have seen but fly out of my head whenever asked about favourite films of the year! Now I've sorted out my list of films to see over the Christmas period (thank you everyone!), I just wanted to throw in how much I enjoyed Iron Sky, and I fully support the idea of it winning Best Soundtrack particularly. The music really did integrate well with the film and give it the drive and presence that could have been lacking through budget on some scenes.

Unless she's a shoe-in for an Oscar, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games for Best Actress. Her portrayal of a young woman heading potentially to her death in those moments before heading in to the arena had me set motionless in my seat!

And yes please to Mads Mikkelsen as Best Actor - while I haven't seen the two films he's nominated for as yet, the clips I've seen look fantastic, and he has always struck me as a brilliant actor.

I'm looking forward to the results of the Kermode Awards this year, there could be some surprises... I mean, did you ever think that Mr Mahogany would ever even be whispered near the idea of a Kermode before?!

Best Actor-Torn between SAM ROCKWELL who is criminally overlooked at awards time and CHRISTOPHER WALKEN from Seven Psychopaths. So I'm going to say both.
