Instagram Takeover: Russ Underwood

Chris Hitchings

主播大秀 Springwatch Digital Team

Wow! Is it really the weekend already?

Things are certainly busy in the 主播大秀 Springwatch office at the moment. This time next week most of the production team will have been relocated up to our new location in Gloucestershire, we'll be preparing for our first live shows on Monday 29th of May.

One of the things I'm most excited about in the next series is the inland wildlife that'll be our main focus. This week we've chosen a photographer for our Instagram takeover that has taken some beautiful photos of our native species, including some of the animals we'll see on screen at Sherborne.

Russ Underwood is a photographer from the Midlands and can be found on Instagram under .

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I live in Northamptonshire and I am a full time designer, part time hobby photographer. I love being outside and travelling around the UK and I am never without my camera. Nature has always been a big part of my life and I grew up watching David Attenborough shows back to back with The Really Wild Show.

C: Where do you take your photos?
R: I take photos anywhere and everywhere. I love forests and try and spend as much time in them with camera as possible. I love the surprise as you can see so many different types of wildlife. I have recently started spending time photographing in my garden as I get two regular visitors, a fox and a muntjac.

C: Why there?
R: I love finding wildlife on your doorstep. I tend to do most of my exploring and photography close to home in and around Northamptonshire as it has a good mix of environments.

C: Have you always been passionate about wildlife photography or are you quite new to it?
R: I have always been passionate. As I child I would spend all of my time in bushes, up trees or collecting bugs, especially worms!

C: What makes a great photo for you?
R: Humour, if possible. Birds and mammals have such character when you spend time watching them. That is why I love local wildlife, you can create a bond with animals and really get to know their personality. It sounds crazy I know, but animals can be so funny to watch, they have similar habits to humans.

C: Do you think you need specialist kit to be a wildlife photographer, or can anyone have a go with a bit of enthusiasm?
R: Personally, I don't think you need any specialist kit, unless you want to sell your photos. All of my photography is for personal pleasure, so the quality doesn't necessarily matter. Like all photography, it's about capturing the moment so you can enjoy looking back at it or sharing it with family and friends.

C: What are you most looking forward to in this series of Springwatch?
R: The fact it is in Gloucestershire and I have family there, so it will feel very close to home. I hope to see owls, badgers and foxes. Owls are my favourite birds but I am yet to photograph a wild one very well. Badgers and foxes get a lot of bad press but if you're lucky enough to see them in the wild, you can't help but be mesmerised by them.

I want my photos featured for an Instagram takeover, what do I need to do?

Whether you're into blackbirds or badgers, foxes or firecrests, we're keen to hear from nature photographers. You'll need to be able to take good quality photos of wildlife that's native to the British Isles. You don't need to have expensive or proffessional photography equipment, just a real passion and a good eye for a great photo.

You can get in touch with the team by sending us a message through Instagram - you'll find us at @主播大秀Springwatch. Unfortunatley, due to the number of requests we recieve we won't be able to respond to every one. We'll be featuring a new nature photographer every week so keep your eyes peeled.
