Nice to see you use Benn's subjunctive (intensional) conditional. 'Could' is not truth-functional so is used by politicians and other spin-masters. It indicates something may or may not happen allowing the listender to draw inferences which the source can then deny. It is fanciful, it is mentalistic like thinking, believing , hoping etc. Sometimes Ö÷²¥´óÐã News today substituted 'will' for 'could' which is bad reporting. Science avoids intensional contexts for what should be obvious reasons. The science does not say it WILL be 40 degrees. Many people don't know the difference - which is very convenient for reporters and spin-doctors.

It would appear that the lesson to be gleaned from today's censored publication of MP's expenses is that the more your MP has blanked out the more potentially corrupt they are likely to be. Even those who squealed about the Telegraph are not happy with the current status quo, more grim stories are likely to emerge from the full details.

It is pretty clear that whatever happens we are likely to benefit as a nation from a national grid for water. One pipeline from Kielder to London ( even the Romans could do this without expensive pumps ), one pipeline from the Lake District intersecting in Yorkshire. Perhaps south east companies like Thames Water could pay for the work from their obscene profits, a mass employment scheme the whole country would benefit from.

Newsnight why are you bothering with climate change now? The Government were told more about climate change in 2001 than you can ever report here. They were also supplied with all the solutions to climate change and all other environmental planetary challenges. This would have also put £50 billion pa into the UK economy. Hence no financial problems here now.

I have spoken to some of the most senior Ö÷²¥´óÐã climate journalists. I can't seem to get any sense out of them or speak any sense to them. There is a communication barrier.

I spoke to a Newsnight researcher/producer some months back. They didn't want to hear my side, but somehow assumed they knew they what I was going to say. Without listening to me or entering into conversation or communication. To arrive at a situation where we both understood each others perspective. The producer started saying you are wrong you are wrong and don't understand the subject, getting really agitated. They proceeded to tell me why I was wrong. I realised as they had not listened to me, they had not understood what I wanted to say. Had some misconception in their head about what they thought I believed. So the thing they were telling me I was wrong about existed entirely in their own head.

I realised what they were trying to correct me on was nothing to do what I thought. So I said no I don't think that.

He erupted in a hissy fit saying if you don't want me to tell you why you are wrong I don't want to speak to you. Then slammed the phone down.

This was a Newsnight producer. I don't really think I have ever spoken to someone as rude, arrogant, incapable of taken on another persons view as this person ever.

This was a Newsnight producer who should be listening objectively. But as they 'imagined' I thought something else, which they considered wrong. They shot off on some emotional, slamming phone down, hissy fit.

You might think it unbelievable but it is true. Do you understand a little more why the media cannot assess important subjects effectively or in a broad way.

I believe it is easier to predict long term events than short term. It is like when you first do technical drawing. When shown how to draw a line the points to be joined should be as far apart as possible to give greater accuracy for the line.

Short term oscillation from the norm etc are averaged out over a long term projection.

The Government appears to be concerned with climate change yet have just bribed members of the public to throw away perfectly good cars with our money.

The Government wants to increase consumption to grow the economy so we/ the planet can pay back the bankers the money they have lost. I was quite interested in your failed petition but perhaps if you had been an NGO they would have allowed it. Of course groups like Friends of the Earth sold out to the Corporate Nazi's in the 1980s, I don't remember them ever batting an eyelid about the miners loosing their jobs. All the emphasis was on reducing SO4 to save the forests in eastern Europe, apparently the introduced technology did the trick, also less need to mine gypsum these days.

The best and only way we can protect our environment is to place a ban on consumer credit for anything not capable of lasting 30 years. We could revolutionise the motor industry, buy a new car and hand it onto your kids when they were old enough to drive.

Go back to the 1930s, plenty of examples of how high the engineering standard was, but make it with modern tooling and anything could last a lifetime. You would only need to buy it once but that is not to say that you can't send it back to the manufacturer and made as good as new every 7 years. On the bright side that although pointless and destructive hydrogen new small city car points the way to go with family electric cars, just lease it all in from the manufacturer. If its any good then at some time you could by it outright, like with many of the older council houses.

I'm afraid the public has been massively lied to in lots of areas over recent times. It wasn't just TV conning them, repoprts are written to persuade the public rather than inform. That they have been told they can trust politicians is outrageous.

The IPCC reports appear to be largely creative writing. More accutately, they appear to me to be pseudo-science designed to fox a public which is entirely ignorant of the language of risk assesment/statistics (a field which I know quite well).

I fear much the same has been done in finance. It's like recent adverts - the language of science is abused to impress the unwary. It all stinks of PR makeovers. Sadly, there are lots of 'scientists' these days who will sell out like this.

Risk assessments have construction samples and validation samples. This only works well when one has good control over variables. The algorithms are then used on new cases with a probability of success, meaning x/y are right, i.e. risk assessments refer back to prior reference classes. The IPCC reports read to me like PR rhetoric, i.e. like politics, not science.

With the fuss still rolling on about MP's expenses can any-one tell me who introduced this system of enhancing their pay? Just how long have they been exploiting the tax payer?

I entered the competition to run the Dome. Got shortlisted. I didn't have the money. JLL wanted to put up or find the venture capital.

There were many sources of potential income. JLL had a global real estate management portfolio. As part of this they knew the increased insurance costs for example sea front property in Miami, increased hurricane damage.

They wanted to supply the finance and the project team to work with me. By predicting and preventing, knowing of or mitigating potential natural disasters. A main customer would be the re-insurance industry with a market potential of £100s billions per year.

Before the Dome winner was announced I got a very embarrassed phone call from JLL. Newsnight, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã the media all knew that there was a project shortlisted for the Dome that would be worth £50 billion per year.

For some reason the Ö÷²¥´óÐã, Newsnight, media didn't want to tell the public this. They reported the AEG bid, Duke of Westminster etc. But not the one who should have won on the competition criteria.

Transparency and unbiased reporting? Try telling the above to a Ö÷²¥´óÐã news producer even though you have all the documents and evidence to support what you say and you get #7. You don't get shortlisted to run a £50 bn pa project without an extensive document trail!

Just an addition to your point on hydrogen cars. The public are being conned. Hydrogen fuel cells should be considered a battery not a fuel.

To get the hydrogen you either have to strip natural gas CH4. Which results in the oxidisation of carbon CO2

Or you have to use electrolysis to obtain the hydrogen. The chemists here will explain better. To break the bonds to produce hydrogen you have to put energy in.

When you recombine the hydrogen with oxygen to produce water. You can only get the same energy out as you put in. Thermodynamics. But you must then factor in the process losses due to inefficiency and the transport etc cost of moving the hydrogen.

Hydrogen as in hydrogen fuel cell is nothing more than a battery. You still have to have a primary fuel or energy source to produce it.Hydrogen is nothing more than another way of moving energy about. As in charging a battery from the mains of a house. Then carrying it somewhere eg battery lawnmower then using it.

I like to watch Newsnight occasionally, when I think there is likely to be something of interest to me. I would probably watch it more frequently if it were not for the discourtesy shown to your interviewees with your frequent rude interuptions. It is ugly, unseemly and uncomfortable and not welcome in my living room.

We know how little MPs can be trusted to tell the truth from this recent expenses fiasco. Note, it's not the ACA itself, but the fact that they tried to present matters differently from how they truly are.

It is not the trivial cost to the publioc, it's the mass deception which people are tacitly angry about. People are angry because it logically means that all else that they read and hear from their so-called leaders MUST NOT BE TAKEN AT FACE VALUE. All their talk of transparency is therefore egregious subterfuge. One can almost hear them laughing at the public's gullibility as they deceive them. That's the message being sent out.

What now?

As to what's been said here at length from a number of posters, is it because the founders of were eugenicists (see also Pearson, Spearman, Keynes) or does one have to have visible status in order to state anything recognisably true and worth taking seriously/sharing? If the latter is the case, we now live in FANTASY/CELEBRITY UK, not a rational country anymore. We are not in Kansas.

In passing, it seems some poor Iranian official has been called into the Foreign Office and told that his Supreme Leader's assertion that the British Government is 'evil' is unacceptable. I thought our government had pretty much accepted that the population here also considers them 'evil' especially in the wake of the expenses scandal where we have seen that what they say and what they do are quite different. Surely one can't blame the Iranian Supreme Leader for picking up on what has been constantly on our TV screens for months, and that's not even touching on the deregulation which led to the Credit Crunch. The Ö÷²¥´óÐã has reported that the FCO has asserted that it was unacceptable because there was no evidence (that Britain has interfered in Iran). It doesn't really add up as I've seen seen it, especially given the Ö÷²¥´óÐã coverage of post-election events in Iran.

Go1,various. Like several other posters with genuine views to express, I prefer to ignore Go1's inane repetitive babblings, as he is unwilling (probably incapable)of reform. However, just for the record, I am more indigenent than many (coming from many traced generations of Thames Boatmen and Lightermen); have no love of Hitler (who triggered my country into a justified war on my 7th birthday, that killed 2 of my young uncles); am not a racist (my career was in developing countries); and I'm married to a Filipino (they all speak English and are the world's finest nurses and carers, which is more important to me than IQ); and I have friends of many colours and faiths.
However,I remain opposed to the decade of continued mass immigration to this small island, being concerned at the resulting overcrowding and effects of importing alien and extreme cultures, that will never become assimilated, but continue to cause strife. I do visit Migration Watch and BNP website for items of fact that are (deliberately)not made readily available on the websites of any other political party or most of the media, and I don't deny the deaths of many jews, and other faiths, during WW2.

Whereas my boyhood heroes were Jacques Cousteau and Antoine de Saint-Exupery (inspiring me respectively to found the largest overseas branch of British Sub-Aqua Club, and to become a pilot and Director of South Pacific Aero Clubs) my current hero is Daniel Barremboim, who though an Israeli citizen, formed an orchestra of young Jewish and Arab musicians and vehemently criticises Israeli foreign policy. There is a person who has a depth of feeling for music and humanity that transcends politics and power.

Perhaps Newsnight could look further afield for their panel members and debate the single most important reason for global warming, swine flu, greed in high places, and many other ills of this century, with worse to come for UK particularly - human population control: truly the elephant in the room.

Nows there is a coincidence. Go1 repeatedly likes to mock me when I revealed as a toddler I used to spend my time with my head in rock pools. This though did have a follow on. Cousteau's programmes were on the TV. This wasn't enough. I found his books in the library. Unfortunately I couldn't read.

So I had to learn to read. To read Cousteau was my motivation. I have to assume that you are someone who didn't just watch the programmes, but also read the books.

This was were I first learnt my ecology. I remember as if yesterday his descriptions of trophic pyramids and food chains in the oceans. I remember attending infant school. When we came through the main door was the library. In pride of place was a new book. It was dark blue edged. With a picture of a Tsunami wave breaking from left to right on the front cover. It was either called The Oceans or The Seas. I think it was a Time Life or similar publication. The teacher said I couldn't have it as the library was only for children who had passed their reading scheme.

In class I was called up to read to the teacher at her desk. Dick and Dora. Polished that, then Peter and Jane. Gabbled my way through in one session.

"Have I finished my reading scheme" I asked. Yes said teacher.

Bang I crashed through the double swing doors of the classroom and grabbed my prize.

If you are an aficionado of Cousteau you might recognise one of my most significant images from my childhood. Cousteau was synonymous with vivid teaming with life photography. The image that stirred me was one of a sterile desolation seabed devoid of all life in the Med, I think. Caused by pollution and dumping.

I was only a small child, and since know more. Probably not that much more in reality. This is why I challenge constantly the obsession with climate change, and constantly post that it is the collapse of the planet's ecological life support systems that is the danger, and one not being addressed.

I do take your point about increasing human population. But a few posts back you referred to the 'rat experiment'. There was no point me replying to it. Because I knew that you knew where it would lead.

Childhood heroes: Cousteau, Galileo and Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13). Add Thunderbirds International rescue and you get the petition link in #4 above. Then my reply to Brossen 99 #14.

I still believe in what I thought age 6 and 7. Go1 can ridicule me but Galileo would not retract what he believed to be true. And without Galileo there would be no Jim Lovell.

CREDIBILITY GAP (#36)

What hacks me of about 'us', is that we trumpet our superior ethics while exercising diabolical omnipotence (with help from Uncle Sam). It is the GAP BETWEEN THE TWO, that I measure us by. Might it be that others do the same?

I find countries that are openly and honestly unpleasant, easier to countenance than British, covert, cultural corruption and world-posturing hypocrisy. The Great White Queen, whom we imprinted on gunboatless foreigners, is long gone, but the great black lie still lives in the heart of our self-aggrandising mythology.

It's classic bullying behaviour. I hate to use that word again, but we do have an endemic. It's pathological narcissism. Study the behaviour well. It's symptomatic of low self-esteem, but don't take pity. That's fatal - they'll rage at that, as it's taken as a put-down. Exactly what they do to others. It's all about an unresolved sense of who they are vs others. They tend to confuse the two and who is who.

Here's one for yer: when the BNP 2 euro seat win is ever mentioned, commentators always stress the fact that the BNP vote never actually went up, rather the labour voter abstained.

13.5 million voted in the 1997 general election for labour then 10.5 at the next general eletion and the final election it was 9.5 million...interesting figures don't you think go1!!!.. i wonder how Labour will do at the 2010 election? will your fears come true?

And just in case anyone doesn't believe that the original Bolsheviks were used by the Germans to get Russia out of the war (something which cost many allied lives on the Western Front), see . This was one of the reasons why Parliament played down the Jewish nature of the original anarchists/Bolsheviks at the time, i.e they were clearly worried about possible reprisals against British and other West European Jews at home given the loss of British, French etc soldiers lives as a consequence of the Jewish Bolsheviks actions. In the late 20s and throughout the 1930s, Stalin purged the party (and COMINTERN) of the original Jewish Bolsheviks. Did some of them find a home in the USA and elsewhere to continue their self-interested anarchistic free-market anti-statism?
