The cases of violent criminals, murderers, rapists and paedophiles being released into our society because of 鈥榯heir right to family life鈥�, etc., are well known to most of us. Yet some contributors attempted to cite cases where the HRA protected the vulnerable.

HRA, by focussing on Individual Rights, has devalued the Rights of Society and ignored the Responsibilities of all members to a society. Although Cameron has confirmed his belief that a Bill of Rights is required (that will hopefully redress this important issue) I believe his review team is heavily loaded with the status quo lefty liberals.

I am presently fighting a battle about the degeneration of discipline (in a faith school) which turns a blind eye on disruptive pupils and believes it can reform even those pupils with criminal records. I鈥檒l have more on this later; meanwhile I believe that the right to privacy of an individual should not be paramount over the right of the public in cases where society is affected or put at any risk. Although I have no interest in the misdeeds of 鈥榗elebs鈥� there should be disclosure and penalty in cases where they hold public office or are represented as role models for our baffled youth.

I read a report this week of a doctor who was charged with dangerous driving -resulting in an accident that killed another driver. The Judge gave the doctor a non-custodial sentence on account he had an important job. Thats how it works. There really is one law for some and another law for others.

Regarding the privacy and superinjunction issue, you just cannot legislate for what people might write on Twitter or Facebook. A great many of them are humble folk in any case so its no good suing them as they might concevably be men and women of straw but since when has there been a law against poverty. No, this is a battle between the rich and the even richer. If A N Celeb (rich person) sues the even richer Daily GetsEvenWorse then the Daily GetsEvenWorse will pay up. What I do object to is that we are using a load of judge time and judicial resources to do this thing, rather than using judges incredible intellect on real law. Its all about which celeb has had their feelings injured and this is daily fare within the media industry. The real news is that poor people have feelings too and its their plight with which we should be concerned.

That surely depends on what you mean by real law, your Honour.

Although I agree with your main point, my gripe is that judges鈥� incredible intellect seem to be used more on studying and applying the minutiae of the wording of legislation than on dispensing fair and just judgements 鈥� with particular regard to the needs of society rather than exclusively those of the individual - too often the offender.

With regard to other judicial resources, whilst it is accepted that prosecuting and defending counsel will use any means to win their case (and their fees) judges should surely look beyond the wording of a piece of legislation, often poorly drafted, or without being fully tested and trialled on a full range of circumstances that may not have been anticipated at the drafting and enactment stages. Case law seems not to be developing in the many cases that now seem to hinge on the one-sided Human Rights Act.

Another current issue regarding the use of 鈥榡udicial resources鈥� is the judgement against Network Rail, which appears to result in a fine of 拢3million being paid out from public funds and into...where? The only winners will again be the army of legal eagles who have argued for and against the judgement.

I generally fly the Kelvin Mackenzie flag but Hugh Grant made a good case against the manner in which our daily tabs operate. I don't always buy into that often said 'we have the right to know' line. My mother came to the UK as a refugee in 1946. She started as a nanny, sponsored by a Quaker family in Cumberland. She got on extremely well with my dad's northern working class family, and was always grateful to, and fiercely defensive of, her adopted country.

You need a bit of variety to spice things up. Generally in Pembrokeshire the women are noted for seeking mates from elsewhere, who then integrate with and enrich the local community.

Re multiculturism. Different cultures mean conflict - and cooperation. In the 1950s and 60s, in my home town like many others, it was the brown school uniforms v the rest. We lived side by side, but if a brown/purple school uniform went out with a green/blue school uniform, the priest would be knocking at the door, and maybe the minister too. I could give graphic horror stories of emotional blackmail and abuse, but what's the point? It would be the truth, but not the whole truth. It would ignore the friendship, goodneighbourliness and community spirit which transcended these divisions.

In Wales we have conflict over the language issue. Feelings run high, and national myths based on a manufactured Celtic history don't help. And yet these myths also give dignity to the marginalised. The see-saw swings of power are settling down. We live together bitchily but fairly amicably on the whole, because Britain being Britain, we are who we choose to be anyway.
