Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý,Ìý

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 28 May 2012

George Montague & Tom Robinson backstage at Concert At The Kings, All Cannings, Wiltshire

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Introducing Uploader - and in this week's edition we have chosen half the artists from next Friday's free festival on Tyneside, and the other half from acts appearing on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Introducing stage at the , 8-10th June such as George Montague (above).

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is always available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, May 28th.

LULU JAMES - Rope Mirage - 0:14

Hailing from South Shields near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the North of England Lulu met her producer and co-writer Domzilla on Generator's UMT:VOX course and they started working together, inspired by James Blake, Jamie Woon, Gill Scott Heron, and Jamie XX. "My genre in music - well, I call it Melodramatic DubHop. One of my biggest ambitions is to perform on the Jools Holland Show." Playing THE CLUNY, Newcastle at this Friday June 1st

WE ARE KNUCKLE DRAGGER - Minus 20 Percent For Being A Loser - 4:22

We Are Knuckle Dragger emerged from the underground scene with two EP releases receiving widespread support from Radio 1, Kerrang!, XFM, Scuzz, national press and of course 6 Music where we had them in for a blistering live session before they headed Stateside to record their debut album in Chicago with Steve Albini. Featuring former members of Yourcodenameis:milo, Contraband and Scrabo trio this single is one of the 14 tracks on TIT FOR TAT which was finally released in April. Headlining THE TYNE at , Newcastle this Friday June 1st

EEVES - Eyes Closed - 6:48

Eeves are an indie rock/postpunk band from Teesside, consisting of Peter McDonald plus three brothers: Stephen, Andrew and Thomas Masterman. They give away almost no factual information about themselves online, though I can tell you they've performed "their radio friendly and mainstream sounds" on a Ö÷²¥´óÐã Tees Introducing live session and their recent single's video featured in the Top Man stores across the UK. Otherwise it's just descriptions of what their music sounds like - "a formidable weave of melody and dynamism, playing sonically powerful live sets sparked with tension and urgency" - since you ask. But if you happen to in the North East this coming weekend you can make you own mind up about that when they play THE CLUNY as part of Newcastle's festival this Friday June 1st.

YOUNG LIAR - Sponsored Silence - 9:46

Young Liar are a five-piece instrumental rock band from Newcastle. Since forming in mid-2010 for what was planned as a one-off gig they've opened for Three Trapped Tigers, I Like Trains, The Twilight Sad, Errors, Male Bonding and Ice Age at venues across the UK. This track is from their second EP - released on local independent label The Calico Print in March. Though he'd be much too modest to tell you so himself, the band's lineup includes Bob Allan my guest on 6 Music this Saturday and a key organiser in this Friday's free Festival in Newcastle where they'll be headlining at cinema.

COLLECTORS CLUB - First To Know - 13:50

"What started off as a little song writing project in Chris's loft has already exceeded all of our expectations!" say Collectors' Club. "Over the past year and a half, we've played alongside Mystery Jets, Pigeon Detectives, Pete and the Pirates, Mona, The Crookes, Polarsets, Little Comets and Goldheart Assembly. Last year we played the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Introducing Stage at T In The Park and our debut single First To Know" was recorded by Young Rebel Set producer Patrick Jordan and released in April." Playing The Cumberland Arms at , Newcastle this Friday June 1st

WEIRD SHAPES - Clouds - 17:27

"Beeb people!" cries Dan Spooner from Weird Shapes (who has a way with words). "We work bloody hard making music in and around our horrific day time jobs. All our relationships are strained to breaking point due to the seemingly endless amounts of money and time we put into this band. We'd be dead, dead chuffed if you played our music as it would go some of the way to excusing our selfish, musicianlike behavior in the eyes of our Wives & Girlfriends!" Weird Shapes are from Teesside. Tipped by Drowned in Sound, featured on Hollyoaks, this is their current single Clouds. Their partners hate them for playing The Star & Shadow at , Newcastle this Friday June 1st.

JOONIPAH - Whupah (Original Mix) - 20:47

This is the title track of a new five track EP by the fast-rising Newcastle DJ JOONIPAH aka 18 year old johnny pheathan due for release on July 9 on the newly relaunched local imprint Triptik Records, now venturing beyond its techno roots. Label manager Tim Shaw (who also co-runs the local club night INERTIA) says "Joonipah was an obvious choice for our first release as he makes excellent, contemporary sounding music. He's young and bound to do well - I'm so pleased he is representing the label." Joonipah will be DJing at the Official Aftershow for . It's presented in association with Mark Ryan from Amazing Beats at the Star And Shadow Cinema in Newcastle this Friday June 1st

GEORGE MONTAGUE - Mind - 25:52

I met the charismatic and talented pianist and songwriter George Montague this weekend (see photo, above) at Wiltshire's Concert At The Kings - a Rock Against Cancer gig hosted by Bob Harris with a lineup that included Madeline Bell, Midge Ure, Brian May, Mike Rutherford and The Sweet. Last Month we featured a song by George on this mixtape called White Cavalry, which had already enjoyed nearly half a million views on YouTube. Yesterday he gave me a copy of his beautifully presented CD album Have You Met George, from which this is his - and my - favourite track. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Gloucestershire Introducing.

THE FLEX - Feet On The Ground - 29:20

The Flex is a five piece British Indie band , born and bred in the Cotswolds and currently preparing for an upcoming album - this track from it has just been released as a free download. Their appearance at Wychwood this year will coincide with the launch of a debut single called Victory. It was made in partnership with The Britain Men's and Women's Wheelchair Basketball Teams, in the run-up to their bid for glory at the Paralympics later this summer. The band's influences come from their producers :Greg Haver, Gaz Coombes and Phill Brown. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Gloucestershire Introducing.

THE BLACK ACID BAND - Spanner & Ratchet - 32:57

The Black Acid Band describe their sound as "a misshapen Frankenstein, brought to life by means of a furious, amp-melting collection of riffs that combine angular and awkward progression. The combined forces of Idriss Mead on vocals, Andy Teece on guitars, Harry Payne on Bass and Leeroy Evans on Drums have been described as 'Loud, energetic, chaotic and fun' by Rhythm & Booze and 'Riffs that would meld well with crushing beer cans on your forehead' by C2 Magazine. Music journalist Beatlebabe also suggests that listening to the band 'could result in sudden urges to destroy hotel rooms and/or throw shapes'. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Hereford & Worcestershire Introducing.

STYLUSBOY - Whole Picture - 35:03

This is the title track of a fine EP by Coventry songwriter and digital photgrapher Steve Jones aka Stylusboy on Lazy Acre Records. I regard Steve as a leading light among today's new generation of DIY digital troubadours, whose music reflects his open, yet fiercely independent nature. Whether playing solo house concerts or theatre shows with a full band, everything he does is connected, committed and community-oriented. This is a songwriter whose developing career I've been keenly following, and which many musicians twice his age would do well to emulate. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Coventry & Warwickshire Introducing.

EMPROR & DUPPY BEATZ [feat BUGGSY & SPLIT P.] - Dangerous - 38:08

Bristol musicians Empror & Duppy Beatz are past winners of Teenage Rampage and have recently performed at The Royal Albert Hall and alongside Delilah, Benga, Miss Dynamite and Chase & Status on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã 1xtra live tour. Duppy Beatz is 24 and has been producing for roughly 7 years. He also works as a youth music mentor and aims to "develop young talent in Bristol to hopefully get us on the map & show the nation what exciting, positive music we have to offer. Bless…"
Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Bristol Introducing.

PHANTOM LIMB - The Pines - 41:37

In America the genres of Gospel and Country music straddle a vast cultural & historical divide, whereas in the UK both are purely musical styles devoid of all the historical baggage. Since 2004 six Bristol musicians have dedicated themselves to marrying the two together, with persuasively beautiful results. "The Staples Singers play a really big part in who the heck I am" says their charismatic frontwoman Yolanda Quartey "but at the same time, The Band are pivotally important to what we do." The Pines is the title track their wonderful second album which was entirely self-funded and recorded in nine days at Compound Studios near Long Beach, California. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Bristol Introducing.

SHY & THE FIGHT - How To Stop An Imploding Man - 45:12

Shy and the Fight are a collective of six musicians from around Ellesmere Port, Chester, North Wales and the Wirral. The band has been together for countless years and now believes they have a sound and persona that is unique to their collective artistic imagination. The group's six members blend banjo, violin, glockenspiel, acoustic guitar, gretch electric, bass, melodica, drums, lap steel, five singing voices - and twelve hands that clap - with glitchy yet soothing electronics. They will possibly tell you that there has never been a band so happy to be playing music together. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Wales Introducing.

SECRET RIVALS - Panic Don't Panic - 48:10

Our old friends Secret Rivals are "a four-piece indie pop band based in Oxford, with split boy-girl vocals singing songs of fall-outs, secrets and despair with hope and longing to put things right, musically influenced by the sharp edges of The Cribs, Idlewild, Pixies and The Wedding Present."
They tell us their new EP Make Do And Mend (Part 2) featured the singles Once More With Heart and I Know Something and comes out this Monday (28th May). They're a bit shy about publishing any kind of discography that tells you which songs are on what EP and when they were all released, but as far as we can tell this one isn't on the new release. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Oxford Introducing.

GUNNING FOR TAMAR - Bonfires - 51:02

Already named as "Ones to Watch in 2012" by Rock Sound, GFT have just finished a UK tour with Kerrang and Rock Sound favourites Jumping Ships in March. This track comes from their debut EP DEAF COW MOTEL which was produced by Forward Russia's TOM WOODHEAD and is released this week on Walnut Tree Records. They'll be heading into the studio at the end of 2012 to record their debut full length. They've just played Great Escape and scheduled for a busy summer of festivals including 2000 Trees, Truck Festival, and of course where they were booked at the recommendation of Ö÷²¥´óÐã Oxford Introducing.

CRASH AND THE COOTS - Don't Have Any Legs - 55:22

The artists formerly known as Crash & The Bandicoots have prudently changed their name - to avoid croassing swords with any litigious US games manufacturers - and also expanded to a four-piece lineup. Team Freshnet's Sam Lee first recommended them to us as one of the freshest new outfits in the Swindon area. Influenced by the likes of Beck, Flaming Lips and The Cure, three tracks are available for streaming on , with their latest recording, 'Brian Fury Wins' available for free download. Playing the Introducing stage at (8-10 June) - recommended by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Wiltshire Introducing.
