INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 17/09/2012

Post categories: ,听,听,听

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 17 September 2012

Burning Shapes
In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, September 17th.

BURNING SHAPES - Bad Karma - [starts 00:14]

Burning Shapes kicked off the summer with this single (produced by Joe Hirst) through Friendly Tribe as a followup up to their 2011 debut Drop. Having already supported Mumford & Sons and The Stranglers, they plan a UK tour later this year. Bad Karma will be included in the soundtrack to a new British feature film Lucid, due next year and is available as a digital release now. Their debut album These Things Happen come out on October 1st.

ROB MARR - Summer In The City - [starts 03:23]

To make his 2007 debut album Domestic Dramas Rob Marr taught himself the drums and played and recorded all the instruments in an abandoned radio station in his native South East London.
In 2009 he was introduced to ex-Sly and the Family Stone drummer Andy Newmark who suggested they work together on Rob鈥檚 second album Anatomy. The first single, Fencebuilding, was played by Cerys and myself here on 6 Music and the album itself comes out on October 17th via Ambiguous Records.

THE B OF THE BANG - The Forest (The Devil Is In The Dirt) - [starts 07:36]

One of the best artist biogs I've seen in years: 鈥淭he B Of The Bang is a collective of human beings from Portsmouth who use guitars, loops, mandolins, white noise, xylophones, accordions, banjos, feedback, shouting and percussion to conjur up melodies for maladies in the 21st century. The B of the Bang exists in an age of copyists and bandwagon-jumpers, brigands, blaggards and ne鈥檈r do wells. Its sole purpose is to sound unlike anything else you鈥檝e ever heard whilst sounding exactly like everything else you鈥檇 ever want to hear. The B of the Bang is really just the sound of 6 people slowly losing their grip on reality. The B of the Bang will cure gout. And tennis elbow. Thank you.鈥

DE鈥橞ORAH - A Thousand Tongues - [starts 11:30]

There are an estimated 6,700 recognized languages in the world. Most of them are spoken by fewer than 1,000 people. Which is why, twelve days before the London 2012 Olympics started, 21 year old South London songwriter De鈥橞orah released her second EP A Thousand Tongues. "Each of the songs" she says "have themes that I believe are relevant to our communities and that could, perhsaps, relate to us beyond the borders of colour, race and creed." A former Brit School student, she was awarded the title of 鈥楥roydon鈥檚 Best Unsigned Music Act鈥 in 2009 and A Thousand Tongues is available on iTunes now.

THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - What Would Arnie Do? - [starts 15:45]

Another excellent biog from Southampton's Blue Screen Of Death: "Have you ever woken up in a lift surrounded by four people you don.t know, with no recollection of how you came to be there, but a nagging feeling that you don't want to know? That's exactly what happened to Steve, Harry, Pete, Paul, and Tom one morning a few years ago. That kind of awkward situation can lead you to make strange decisions. They chose to assume that they all played in a rock band together. This way they need ask no further questions as to how they had ended up in this position. That is their story and they're sticking to it." This tribute to California governor Mr Schwarzenegger comes from their current album Leave The Future Behind - available from .

THEATRE ROYAL - A Hundred Thousand Tears - [starts 19:12]

"We鈥檙e very happy to announce" say Medway outfit Theatre Royal "that our next release will be a digital download single on September 10th, available from iTunes, Amazon digital and all good online retailers. The lead track A Hundred Thousand Tears is taken from our forthcoming album At The End Of A River, The Sea鈥 and is joined by two non-album b-sides: Down South With The Chameleons and A friend A Stranger and I. The artwork features a painting from Medway artist, ex Stuckist, Billy Childish associate and all-round top bloke Wolf Howard." They play Bethnal Green's Sebright Arms in London a week on Friday (September 28th) and open for Dodgy at The Function Rooms in Rochester on October 26th.

ADAM LEAVER - Visions of Life - [starts 22:08]

Having played guitar since the age of 7 - subsequently graduating from the ACM in Guildford with a BA (Hons) in Music Performance - Adam Leaver's teaching skills on both guitar and music technology have been in demand among aspiring players in the Sevenoaks area ever since. He plays guitar in a local funk band but his real passion is songwriting - drawing inspiration from many styles of music ranging from Jazz to Arabic ballads. This stonking electro track was recommended to us by Jacob Rickard from one of the most proactive Introducing shows in the whole country at 主播大秀 Kent.

RICHARD KAPP & THE GOWNS - Let It Go - [starts 25:29]

We first encountered Austrian born Richard Kapp in 2010 when he was playing in Brighton two years ago with Fresh On The Net favourites Birdeatsbaby. It's taken him since then to write and finish his second album Amok from which this song is taken. In addition to the other 11 tracks on the LP - with titles like You Fell Out Of My Bed and Master Of Tiramisu - Richard 's just released video of what he describes as his first sarcastic country song ever: The Unemployed Cowboy Boy filmed live at his CD release party on September 8th. Amok is available now via iTunes.

PINEY GIR - Would You Be There - [starts 31:11]

Piney Gir lives in London, England but was born Angela Penhaligon in Kansas City, USA and grew up in an isolation underlined by a strict religious upbringing. In her late teens she broke from the past and discovered the music of the masses. Billed as country music's "finest Pentacostalist charismatic Christian" she is a former member of UK bands Vic 20, The Zoltan Kodaly School For Girls and the Schla La Las as well as her own Piney Gir Country Roadshow. This single comes from her new solo album Geronimo recorded in LA with Rob Campanella from the brian Jonestown Massacre.

BIG WAVE - Dying on the Vine - [starts 34:25]

Big Wave formed last February in what they describe as "the coastal paradise that is Torquay, Devon." This summer they won a competition - entered by 1600 other bands - to play the End of The Road Festival in a competition that was decided by a panel of judges. After their debut EP The Roots of Love sold out, the band recently thanked fans by releasing a free download of this track Dying on the Vine, through the Plymouth based label Art is Hard Records - also home to the wonderful Boscombe surf outfit Bos Angeles. They've been featured recently in the famous Glasgow PodCart and Japan's P+M magazine, and another single is expected imminently.

DARKE HORSE - Jack鈥檚 My Friend - [starts 37:35]

Simon Kaviani, Chris Gill, Joe Pearson, Jonno Lodge formed Darke Horse in Sheffield at the end of 2007 and released their debut EP Now Starts The Fun in May this year. Although they haven't yet requested one of those short URLs for their Facebook page, you can read all about their "philosophy of bringing ballsy, entertaining rock back into the mainstream" and their "ferocious guitar licks and grinding bass lines" in their biog there. We think Jack鈥檚 My Friend comes from the new EP, but unfortunately there's no tracklisting. Meanwhile guitartist Simon Kaviani has apparently won the Riffathon song writing contest, set up by Jimmy Page and Brian May in aid of their charity ABC.

JOYCE THE LIBRARIAN - Follow Me, I鈥檓 Right Behind You - [starts 40:48]

Joyce The Librarian formed after meeting in late 2009 at a Bristol book club. They share a love of acoustic instruments and vintage organs, 60s surfer harmonies and sci-fi dystopian storytelling and their debut EP The Weight of the Line was selfreleased in both physical and digital forms via their Bandcamp in February. This single is released by the wonderful Folkwit Records today (Monday September 24th) and will be followed by the debut album They May Put Land Between Us on November 5th. They play a hometown show at Benjamin Perry Boathouse this Tuesday, Sept 25th and a short UK tour in November to support the album release.

STEEL TREES 鈥 Attack Of The Stoner Zombie Killer Kids - [starts 43:09]

This is the title track of the debut album released last week by our second Sheffield band this week, Steel Trees - a power trio in a rundown ex-pit village called Goldthorpe. We hope for the band's own personal safety that none of their neighbours read their humorous description of its inhabitants on Facebook, where their interests are listed as "Rocking In the Eternal Bog of Stench." They鈥檝e now had two 主播大秀 Introducing Sessions and are regulars in the pages of Sheffield's biggest fanzines Toast and Exposed, and we warmly recommend their excellent tongue-in-check video for this song at

YOUNG BELIEVERS - She's A Writer - [starts 46:16]

"We hit the ground running in York last year amidst a stream of lyrics, a hail of offbeat acoustic guitar picking and a shared love of Bert Jansch and Special Brew. We recorded the fruits of our labours (ie. our first EP) in a couple of transpennine locations (ie. Manchester and Bradford) then hired a van and hit the road for a summer of junk food and gigs, with inevitably comical results.
We acquired our own barn when we came back to town and went into hibernation for a while.
Then we came back bolstered with more members, more instruments, more SONGS! You can download our EPs on our"

MR BEN SIR - Ports - [starts 49:17]

Mr Ben Sir is the output of Ben Charlesworth aided by a collective of musicians, Ben鈥檚 versatility and experimentalism has seen him switch effortlessly between these delicate and detached songs to radio friendly singles and is now Ben himself is also currently working on a new project that marries his own vocal and ambient piano with beats and samples from electronic producer Foxymoron. He plays a rare solo show a week today (Monday September 24th) opening for Edinburgh's Withered Hand at Newcastle鈥檚 Mining Institute. Plans are underway for a full collective live show at some point in the future.

EMILE BERNARD - Friends In Time - [starts 53:15]

Emile Bernard is the name of a French Post-Impressionist painter who enjoyed artistic friendships with Van Gogh, Gauguin and C茅zanne. It's also the stage name of London-based songwriter Paolo Fornasari who dresses like a suave scally from a Dickens novel and offers the capital's audiences quirky poetry with tints of dark electronica. This modern/vintage mash up aims, he says for "a unique sound with stripped down romance and quality like Villagers, and a raw voice joining ranks with the likes of Woodkid". Emile/Paolo is currently working on his solo debut EP Bye-Bye Baby Blue.

THELONIUS - Spanish Joint - [starts 56:25]

Thelonius is a five piece instrumental hip-hop/jazz outfit based in Bristol UK, that combines classic beats with jazz based solos on a combination of original material and classics from the golden ages of both genres. This track comes from their debut five track EP Reminisce which is available on iTunes and via Their gigs feature a variety of special guests and they have upcoming hometown shows on September 30th plus November 16th and 21st.
