Newcastle on Tyne quartet Rexine

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, September 24th.

REXINE - There And Back Again - [starts 00:13]

There And Back Again by REXINE was produced at Polestar studios by Penetration's Rob Blamire and comes out as a single on Monday November 19th. The band consists of Shona Thomas, Graeme Harlow, Stacey 主播大秀 and Cathy Russell - and was formed three years ago in Newcastle on Tyne. They describe their sound as "alternately jagged and jangly, discordant and catchy. Noisy bittersweet tales of rusting rides and camera slides ...jagged and jangly post-punk mayhem... " They're opening for Japan's legendary Shonen Knife at The Cluny a week on Thursday (October 4th).

LET'S BUY HAPPINESS - Works Better On Paper - [starts 02:11]

Also from Newcastle are the cqptivating five-piece Let's Buy Happiness - who we first featured on 6 Music Introducing back in August 2009. Siblings Sarah Hall (vocals) and James Hall (guitar/keys)
teamed up with Graeme Martin (guitars), Mark Brown (bass) and James King (drums) primarily to play for their own enjoyment, but a slew of wonderful singles resulted in Maida Vale sessions for Radio 1 and 6 Music plus a slot on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury 2010. They've toured extensively and are currently selfproducing a new EP for release in the New Year. If you enjoy this LBH classic on our mixtape this week, you can hear and purchase the rest of their catalogue to date from .

KILL THE SOYA - Braille - [starts 06:29]

Kill The Soya is Slovakian alternative metal band currently based in Britain. The band was formed in 2010 as a studio project consisting of two members: Radovan Dragun and Jozef Mikula. After a few years they formed Kill The Soya, although in its beginnings KTS were meant to stay as a studio band, but are now making efforts to become a stage band. They鈥檙e currently working on new material.

LUX LISBON - Get Some Scars - [starts 09:05]

Lux Lisbon is Stuart Rook (vocals), Charlotte Austen (bass), Ali Jones (guitar), Karl Watson (guitar), Jamie Shaw (drums). Stu from the band lives in Durham and has worked for years in Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe and plays 5-a-side in Spenny on a Friday. What more would you need to know? Well, their album 鈥榊our Heart Is A Weapon The Size Of Your Fist鈥 is now available.

MILES PROWER feat COLLEEN QUINN - Pneumatic - [starts 13:23]

This is a side project from Miles Prower - one half of Bristol鈥檚 Nova Robotics. His debut solo EP will be available Summer 2013. "Electro house/Synth Pop/Sci-Fi straight out Bristol, UK". He says on his Facebook page. Er, that's it.

WE ARE KNUCKLE DRAGGER - Get The Horizon Yourself - [starts 17:30]

Tyneside trio We Are Knuckle Dragger consist of Aran Glover, Peter Currie and Shaun Abbott and played a blinding live hub session for me on 6 Music a year or two ago. They travelled to Chicago to record their debut album with Steve Albini. They start a 16 date tour of the UK in Southampton this Wednesday September 26th. More info and links at

DEBS McCOY - Black Winged Taker (piano version) - [starts 19:39]

More warm and engaging music from an exceptional musician and visual artist. "Played in bands with my brother Jay McCoy and Carl Stafford who played in Elia Drew, KT Tunstall's former band. Also played with Sean Harrington from Mishaped Pearls and Pill Box. Background in Fine Art/art education. Worked as an Art Psychotherapist in the NHS for the past 6 years, resigned from job - awful court/tribunal case (that I won) relating to my Dyslexia - the stress anxiety and isolation from it all propelled me back into music." I recommend checking out for more of that music and to check out some of the oustanding visual images in her gallery.

EXPLORERS - Ticket 主播大秀 - [starts 22:51]

Jez and Rob are EXPLORERS and hail from Chesterfield. The duo makes experimental alternative pop with a bit of a melancholy edge standing somewhere in between Phoenix Friendly Fires and Empire Of The Sun. They apparently 鈥渢hrow themselves into the ethereal world of dreams, in the constant desire to escape loneliness, haplessly wandering in the 鈥渓ongest night鈥 that will bring you to the place you lost鈥.

JACOBEAN RUFF - Desert II - [starts 25:43]

Desert II by Jacobean Ruff was forwarded to us for this week's mixtape by Jenny Eells at 主播大秀 Introducing in York. So - Sophie Pearson, Aaron Collins-Wood, Scott Bulmer, Sophie Elmieh, Jed Timms and Alice Trifunovic - what can you tell us about yourselves on your Facebook page? About: Folk band playing live and recording songs! Biog: We simply lurv to play music! Description: For bookings, contact Sophie Alice Pearson. So, listeners, now you know. They play The Hop in Leeds later today (Monday Sept 24th) and Alwoodley Community Centre on Saturday.

GOAN DOGS - Hold Me Back - [starts 29:53]

Bristol's Goan Dogs consist of Luke St Leger voc/gtr, Dan Lane drs, Theo Mackie gtr/syn, Bill Sherwood bs and Sam Kynan Powell tpt/gtr/perc. The band strarted out with just Luke and Dan as a musical duo inspired by the lofi Americana music they heard whilst travelling through California before expanding to a full five piece lineup, which draws inspiration as much from cinema as from other recording artists. Their next live show is a hometown gig at The Croft a week on Saturday (October 6th)

CHRISTA VI - Small Way Through - [starts 33:56]

Christa Vi is an Australian/German songwriter based in East London who lists her inspirations as
"life鈥檚 hard knocks, long plane journeys, walking alone in foreign cities, London鈥檚 noise pollution, the inner pain and beauty of others, overheard snippets of conversation - and a slight fear of losing that feeling." Her debut album will be produced by George Shilling (Coldcut, Yazz, Teenage Fanclub, Primal Scream etc) and released next year. Meantime this single Small Way Through came out at the end of last month hard on the heels of - and possibly as a commentary on - her EP Long Way 主播大秀 in July. You can find a short interview with Christa on my personal blog at .

CARNABELLS - Rock 鈥榥鈥 Roll Beat
- [starts 37:26]

Leeds five-piece Carnabells was founded by brothers Luke and Mitch Thompson. After years of arguments and threatening to smash their guitars over each other鈥檚 heads (aka 鈥楤rotherly Love鈥) they finally decided to write music together and form an indie rock n roll group, along with drummer Tom Webster, Pianist Jack Mattison, and Bassist Louis Appleyard. Brought up in an old mining village in the heart of Yorkshire, they fell upon a sound with its heart and soul in traditional rock n roll, that has being described by their friends and followers as Coal Mine Rock. Their new EP She's a Rollercoaster will be released on October 15th.

REBEKAH DELGADO - Scoundrelle
- [starts 40:14]

We first came acrosss the work of Rebekah Delgado in April with a song from her newly-released EP Sing You Through The Storm, from which we included Trying To Forget on the mixtape in June.
Like the artist herself, her website is tri-lingual with Castillian Spanish and French options. This is the title track from a new EP due out on October 8th to be followed a week later by her debut album Don't Sleep and a London launch gig at Bush Hall on October 17th.

JH - Next Time - [starts 43:00]

JH is a solo artist from London who writes, arranges, performs and mixes all his material himself, with the exception of some of the drums. Stylistically, he tells us, his albums take in alternative and progressive rock, pop, powerpop, psychedelia, acoustic and experimental genres. In 2008 he released his hour-long debut album Truth & Bullshit. He followed it up last December with Wanderlust, 80s minutesworth of diverse and eclectic music from which this single Next Time is taken.

JOEL HOOD - Teardrops - [starts 46:39]

"The world is an island on a lonely sea, only satellites for company" sings Joel Hood on his song Teardrops which has already picked up 3,000 plays in just three months on his Soundcloud page. His web presence is a tad light on information: "Not very danceable dance music from the north of England." Er, that's it.

CLEFT - Gulch - [starts 50:32]

Cleft formed in November 2011, when guitarist Dan Beesley and drummer John Simm found each other (and themselves) on the internet - despite living only two miles apart. After a spell in Brighton where he discovered the joys of cheese, Dan moved from the Deep South to Manchester. At exactly the same timeJohn moved down from Lancaster due to a bad experience with a three foot garden gnome and a bucket. Since then they've been condensing 14 minute prog songs into 3 minutes and having a lot of fun doing it. Gulch is the opening track on their newly released EP Whale Bone, recorded live at Blue Cat rehearsal studios in Manchester. Their Bandcamp offers the option to download it for free but - equally - to make a wildly extravagant donation towards funding the band in future. Which, I hope you'll agree, they richly deserve

RUSTS - Even Hipsters Get Married - [starts 53:26]

A return visit to 主播大秀 Introducing on 6 Music for Rusts, whose excellent artist biog bears repeating in full. "After the umpteenth bailiff letter landed on Scott Russell's doormat, he knew it was time to sell up and move on. The last and hardest belonging to let go was his beloved 1960s Fender amp, which he very reluctantly sold to clear his council tax arrears. While rattling around the house on his own, the sense of loss and heartache inspired him to write and record an album under the new moniker, 'Rusts'. Blencathra is Scott Russell's his debut solo release as Rusts - ten songs of melancholic English country house music - Country and Americana-tinged, but with its roots in Albion."

JOSEPHINE - Zadok - [starts 56:58]

Josephine and her ensemble blend hip-hop classical and rock music, with more influence from Bach than Beyonce. They juxtapose string trio and electric guitar, operatic voice and rap vocals. Vocalist Josephine met fellow founding members Gregory Madge (guitarist) and Reuben O鈥 Donoghue (drummer) while at university and recruited the rest of their 10 piece lineup after moving to London.
