World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

In case you were wondering what we do...

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH - To give readers an idea of how World Cup Match of the Day gets made, over the next couple of weeks I鈥檒l be asking different members of our team at the IBC to explain their roles. Today it鈥檚 the turn of Phil Sibson, one of two VT (video tape) directors.

Myself and Suzanne Whiston are the two VT co-ordinators, or VT sweepers as we鈥檙e known at the 主播大秀. We鈥檝e got a team of producers and assistant producers working here, making highlights of games, music montages, features and analysis. philsibson203.jpg Mine and Suzz鈥檚 job is to divvy up the tasks that are needed, deciding who does what, where they will do it and making sure it all gets done on time. During a programme our job is to play out the finished packages live to air, or if they have been made in advance, we can play them to the editors in Berlin for them to view. During working hours one of us always has to be at the IBC, so initially we were working 16-hour shifts - from 9am until 1am (don鈥檛 forget highlights programmes finish as late as 0130 German time!). But now things have settled down, we鈥檝e split the shifts, so one of us works 9am-9pm and the other from 1pm-1am. Because the Match of the Day team is split between Munich and Berlin, communication at every level is key to things running smoothly. Meeting deadlines is the biggest pressure. If highlights of the 1400 BST kick-off are needed for half-time in the 1600 match, that doesn鈥檛 leave much time to get it made! But everyone working on the World Cup is here because they鈥檙e good at what they do, so hopefully everything will continue to run smoothly!

Hi,
I'd just like to point out that Tomas Rosicky's surname is not pronounced as "Rusedski", but "ROsiCky". Sorry, I just had to mention it since it's been quite annoying for Czechs living in the UK to have their name mispronounced.
Many thanks

Here in the US he also became Rosikki. Somone should have told them that it sounds almost like Nowitzki ...

Athers - I spend most of my working life wondering what it is you exactly do so I'll be looking forward to interviewing you myself if we actually make it to Munich this weekend.

I think the commentators did fairly good with Rosicky's name compared to Andrea Pirlo's at least.

Pearl-o, hah! The 'Pir' in Pirlo is pronounced kind of like the 'Nir' in Nirvana.

It also feels like the 主播大秀 dumbifies the people watching with explaining who this and that person in Italy are, like they come from a country no one has ever heard of.

Re. Rosicky and Pirlo: Just be thankful that David "The King of Mispronounciation" Pleat no longer works for the 主播大秀. (Remember his take on Newcastle's Ginola and Gillespie?)

He is doing OK for the other side, though.

Talking of pleats, what was going on with Bruce Arena's slacks yesterday?

Not cool!

Ro-sick-y. Where does the difficulty lie? It appeared Strachan was the only man on the 主播大秀 team who knew how to say it.

We Spanish also have our names mispronounced. Why?!!!
