Geraldine James is Hilary Rees Benson

As Ö÷²¥´óÐã Secretary, Hilary is one of the more experienced members of the Purple Alliance Cabinet and one of Ros' most trusted aides.

Ìý

She was an MP for New Labour before defecting to the Purple Alliance and on the surface appears to be a firm supporter of Ros and her radical policies.

Geraldine James – Biography

Ìý

Described by Sir Peter Hall as one of the great English classical actresses, Geraldine James has starred in TV dramas as varied as Band of Gold, The Jewel in the Crown and White Teeth.

Ìý

Nominated three times for a Bafta award, Geraldine was most recently seen in ITV drama Jane Hall; Andrew Davies' adaptation of Anthony Trollope's He Knew He Was Right; and as Mrs Pincher in Little Britain.

Ìý

She has also appeared in films including The Calendar Girls; Bill Murray comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little; and The Tall Guy.

Ìý

Geraldine received her first Bafta nomination in 1985 for her role as Sarah Layton in the acclaimed ITV drama, The Jewel in the Crown.

Ìý

In the same year she starred with George Cole and David Suchet in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã adaptation of Tom Sharpe's comic novel, Blott on the Landscape.

Ìý

Her two other Bafta nominations came for Band of Gold and The Sins, a mini-series about the seven deadly sins, co-starring Pete Postlethwaite.

Ìý

Geraldine won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival in 1989 for her role in Stephen Poliakoff's She's Been Away, starring Dame Peggy Ashcroft in one of her final roles.

Ìý

Other TV credits include The Hound of the Baskervilles; State of Play; Sky One sci-fi drama Hex; and Crime and Punishment, starring John Simm.

Ìý

On the big screen she has also appeared in Moll Flanders; The Luzhin Defence; Gandhi; and the Wolves of Willoughby Chase.

Ìý

Geraldine was made an OBE in the 2003 Queen's birthday honours list, and was nominated for a Tony award in 1990 for her role as Portia in The Merchant of Venice.
