New Recruit

Well the weather has hampered our progress a peedie bit and we have not been able to get on the roof for a few days because of high winds and rain.

But Super cat to the rescue!!!!!

Pickle (by name and by nature) took to the heights to survey the lack of building work. Scaled the wall, scrambled up the eaves and perched herself upon the old roof to spy on the room that up until now she had been shhhushed out of every time she decided to look into or over a wall or window ledge. She seemed very interested in the maze of roof trusses and I am sure that her next expedition is to scale the wall and use her sharp claws to mark a new scratching post within the new roof timbers. Oh to be a cat!!!!!

Meanwhile clever Billy was fast asleep on the couch wondering what all the fuss was about ......................

A boldly-going sort of cat, that Pickle, and just as well too, as MC is leaving Westray bereft of cats both Wonderful and Web-aware. I am not much on the Roof of Confrontation these days, due to Yehoodie McRoodie and family having left for pastures new. Wish I hadn't looked at that picture of Billy. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Flying Cat from The Sunroom of Eternity

I must admit i would rather be a dog myself.....(perhaps 'cause I am already familiar with the dog house?). Nice cat, though.

mjc from NM,USA

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? (sorry folks, but it is hard to resist!)

mjc from NM,USA

Flying Cat if you are looking for a spare armchair then there is one booked for you in the new wing of the property, Unfortunately you would have to share it with the menagerie and dodge the spurless Rooster whose feeling a bit deflated since Mr B despurred him at the weekend, (have you seen a rooster without his dignity? )

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Mjc has your Dog house got a stucco roof too ?

Barebraes from Shapinsay

A rooster without his dignity? A capon? I have seen ... and eaten the like (shhh! I have eaten foie gras/foie d'oie as well). # Once my mother was checking a hen to see whether an egg was in the offing, when an offended but rather rash rooster-mate attacked ["The Adventures of a Poor Childhood"]: no spurs for the ruffian - he was soup before you could say (whatever do you say in Shapinsay?) - Bon Appetit. # My (real) dog house is an igloo-shaped heavy duty plastic contraption (the price was right, and I payed obeisance to my fellow northern walrus eating citizens). Do YOU let your lapdog sleep in the house, Barebraes? Don't tell me he shares the bed with you and the firefighter!?

mjc from NM,USA

The Hooch monster shares the bed only on Sunday morning, his treat and mine too the dog pushes Mr B out of bed to make the early morning cuppa. The rest of the time he sleeps at the foot of the bed and snores incessantly (the dog that is not Mr B)

Barebraes from Shapinsay

I like the sound of the armchair. However, the only kind of sharing I can imagine doing with a de-spurred rooster (and the de-spurring will have made my aims and objectives easier to achieve!) is of the gustatory variety. Which might ruffle a few feathers.......

Flying Cat from cookerybook cupboard

I read in the Orcadian Spiegel (or was it News of the Northern World?) that taxidermists in Orkney, particularly in the Stromness and Shapinsay areas, specialize in cats, and do a mighty fine job. Is that correct? (Hope no one reading this has to be taken to the A&E for resusscitation. Cool it folks: I am just trying to debunk an urban myth!!). The story I heard was that Animal Control thought they picked a stray cat from the ledge of someone's window and ... (did I hear the sound of dishes crashing?!). # Yes, yes, I am glad I live far away ... # Hope you all had/have a good weekend.

Derek from Myview (South Ronaldsay)

Hi Barebraes: how are the cats doing? Alive and well? More importantly, how are MY ducklings and chicks getting on? Hopefully they did not get blown away? Growing up nice and plump, are they?

mjc from NM,USA

Derek. Glad to see there are no hard feelings there were none intended. Keep on Bloggin

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Stuffed Cats , I thought that you stuffed a chicken. Dont let mia and Fc hear that rumour. and as for 'My' Ducklings then you will have to wait till next spring and see if I can raise one or two sucessfully. They are in Ducky heaven alas

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Just before I fly off on a wing and a prayer to Nuevo Mehico to stuff a yankee-doodle-dandy-dawg ..... or two, could someone tell me where Ducky Heaven is, as I feel it's the sort of place a huntin' scootin' phishin' feline could have a darn-tootin' gradeA downright grand time of it. Yee-ha!!

Flying Cat from in a soggy tussock

What's this I hear about the ducklings being frozen (are they in the new freezer that Runestone got recently?)? You have to harden them early, Barebraes, not coddle them with swims in the tub!! Oh well, I take consolation that there is still a chick left: is it getting time for it to get caponized yet? Are you going to do the foul deed or will Mr. Barebraes do it with his fireman's axe? # You sound just like my wife who, when I came home years ago with a catch from fishing, said: "you caught them, you clean them, cook them, and then eat them!" Now you all know why I am not a fisherman (the eating is fine with me: the rest .... phew!).

mjc from NM,USA

NM: home of the Lobos. If you are nice to me (metamorphosis the process is called, methinks?!), I'll try to protect you from their fangs. FC: you might enjoy it here. We have not had rain for weeks on end, feels like spring, and the only clouds in the "partly cloudy" skies are those made by contrails. Sounds as if it is raining ceaselessly in your area: wet around the ears you are, eh? For your info. ABQ is the code for our Sunport, and, not too rarely, a mariachi band meets passengers in the arrival lounge. So, y'all come (and let me know ahead of time).

mjc from NM,USA

stuffed cats, STUFFED CATS, dear me, to think the only stuffing I knew of, is the accusation hurled at me by my female staff regarding my diet!!! (I blame it on the male staff - give him his due, he knows how to shop.)

mia from soggy garden

Meeeeeaow mia, I like a well-rounded shoulder and a plump thigh even better than svelte. Carry on Stuffing!

Flying Cat from all excited and bothered

It's been diet time recently, male staff has been away on overnight trips and it's not so easy to con the female staff that I am fading away.......

mia from being hopeful

poor mia theres a spare bowl for you here anytime

Barebraes from Shapinsay

got my stick and hanky ready, if you see something bedraggled and blue, it's me!

mia from hitching a lift

Going to see barebraes before moi mia? You hussy!

FLying Cat from owleyed and outraged

excuse me, Flying Cat, but barebraes put temptation in my way & I do like a good tempt, you've been making eyes at Winnou (or at least wanting to!) and being the lady I am I wasn't even going to comment!

mia from feeling fluffed

FC and Mia you are both welcome. I will let you know when the hammer weilder is out thought FC

Barebraes from Shapinsay

*SOB*

Flying Cat from in bits on the floor

I think I might just delay my visit for a peedie bit (see, trying to learn & use the lingo from your part of the world). Life is very amusing for a cat at the moment in the suburbs. Young staff has bought himself the new Nintendo Wii & both myself and female staff have been verily amused at the antics of the male population in the house. You've never seen a boxing match like this (oh if only I could post a picture!). There they both are making like Ali - floating like butterflies (ha!), stinging like bees (as if) standing side by side and punching like mad into thin air. The giggle factor is very high. Bipeds are strange..........

mia from a cheshire grin

Mia: amazing what you islanders are up to. 'Tis true that I would rather meet the Hammerer of Shapinsay that way (do you have the Nintendo latest, Barebraes? for in between cup of teas?) than in a duel over the rooftop. I guess your bipeds will be ordering more software (the cost of the console is just the beginning!) before the year is out ...

mjc from NM,USA

mjc, its just the males spending habits we have to watch, and as female staff's other job is (in general terms) in the finance sector, she's hiding the plastic from them! Her bad habit - don't let her anywhere near a bookshop!

mia from still grinning

When I was at Blackwell's (several times, in between lunches and dinners), I drenched in cold sweat. The prices of the books I oogled were horrendous, and yet my fingers kept twitching at the wallet. Doubtless if I had a laptop with me I would have ordered dozens of books from Amazon.com (US, heavily discounted) right there and then (sitting at their Cafe Nero) ... dreaming of the money I was - uh! - saving (typical, eh?!).

mjc from NM,USA

No nintendo here i am afraid although Mr B dissapears over the brae to play the lad nextdoor on the playstation ( hes a big kid really)and Mia your orcadian is excellent.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

mjc, are you sure it wasn't a case of meals in between visits to Blackwells? Female staff has been heavily restricted on her visits to Toronto, ie not allowed into the 'biggest book shop in the world' without a chaperone! And she still has to post herself parcels because she'd be over the luggage allowance!!! As for trips to Glasgow or Edinburgh, male staff is resigned to her disappearing into Borders or Waterstones! And she still uses Amazon. As you may guess we have smoke detectors everwhere, and no rooms without books. Barebraes: thanks for your compliment, I'm chuffed ;)

mia from looking quizzical

Is oogled a cross between googled and ogled?

Flying Cat from a cheshire grin

Hate to admit it, FC, but you are correct: ogle is the term (the o can be short or long). Perhaps if one does "oodles" of "ogling," one could be said to be "oogling?" {Am I trying to get out of a bad spot? Sounds suspiciously like it}.

mjc from NM,USA

Ah Toronto!! ("biggest bookshop in the world" - in Canada? Ah, that's because they are bilingual, eh? Two of everything, by law. - kidding). Years ago, at the Toronto (science, I think it was) museum, I was crowned Yo Yo Champion ('tis a long story: be thankful I have forgotten all the silly details).

mjc from NM,USA

mjc - for godwiness sake, watch out for those brackets, whitesettler is having a malign influence in that department [succumb and be sectioned!!!] {resist resist, avanti populo!}. *whimper* (scallowawife is a classic case.)
