Setbacks

What a week !!

The anticipation in waiting for anything is often too much.

Things that have for so long been ideas can become reality but at a price.

The Development Trust of Shapinsay have been waiting for the outcome of the proposed planning permission to erect a Community Owned Wind Turbine on the island. Yesterday was our day of reckonning and Mr B and myself took the ferry to Kirkwall to sit in on the planning meeting to see if the Trusts application would be approved.

We were joined by some other residents who had an interest in the outcome too.

The council had received quite a few objections not all from within Orkney and a late objection from HIAL the Highlands and Islands Airport Limited.

The main number of objectors were postcard objections supporting a resident of Shapinsay whose property is close to the site and objects to the nearness of the Turbine.
The Airports objection was on grounds that the turbine would cause interferrence to the island planes radio transmissions .

The Council were advised to reject the planning application. This was deferred pending further investigations so that further enquiries could be made to the validity of the photo montage that the main objector had based his campaign on and clarification and proof regarding the HIALs objection.

Barebraes is the closest house to the site and unlike some people I don't mind the thought of looking out and seeing the turbine.

Its a small price to pay when you consider the benefits that the income from the turbine would hopefully make to Shapinsay. But thats only MY OPINION and I understand and acknowledge other peoples concerns and if it can be proven that the turbine will interfere with radio communications and cannot be rectified then I would be the first person agree that safety is the most important thing to consider.

We live to fight another day.

Update: HIAL has withdrawn its objection :)

I should think so too. RIP Merranblo.

What is and is not beautiful is of course highly dependant on the cultural context. As an engineered structure I personally find wind turbines strikingly elegant and the rotating blades rather soothing, the more the merrier. The way groups of them slowly go in and out of synchrony as one watches is quite fascinating. There is a wind farm of about 30 turbines, like the on in the picture, about 2 km from Copenhagen International airport and in the several years that it has been there not one aircraft has fallen from the sky becasue of commmunications interference. "Always look on the bright side of life..." maybe your neighbour will come to like wind turbines, too!

Barney from Swithiod a thing of beauty

So long, Barebraes (mrs. and mr.). I guess that, in order to see the completed renovations, given the fact that the 主播大秀 is giving up on IB, I will have to come and say hello one of these days.

I Hope that we can all keep in touch with each other and find another home to carry on the quips and funny banter between us . In the case that we dont I would very much like to have email addresses of anyone who wants to keep in touch . I guess you can ask Carol at IBHQ for mine if anyone wants it
