Bon Voyage and Other Things

Well I have decided to take Mjc's advice and take a break. Things have been hectic here for the last few weeks, Parents arriving, Step Son here to decide if he wants to live with us and work piling up and the weather taking a turn for the worse.

My parents flew back to Essex last night and hopefully were not put off by the wind and the rain, We had a few days where we were able to get out and they had a rest if nothing else, My Mum has problems with her memory and Dads a Diabetic so it was nice that they were pampered for the time they were here. It was difficult saying Goodbye but hopefully I will be visiting Essex before too long.

Mr B was called out last week on Fire Duty as the rain was in fear of flooding a house, All the fire fighters managed to get it under control and there were no injuries.

As I gathered from Hermits headlines the Sanday Show went ahead and a great time was had by the evidence of the pictures. Our show was cancelled unfortunately but the produce and crafts show will be going ahead.

Work on the house is slow due to the weather, it will be nice to see some progress. I havn't had time to keep up with the blogs apart from the odd glimpse to see if you are all ok and have tried to leave a few comments. I would hope that in a couple of weeks I will back to regular blogging and have some pictures to prove that we are working and not swinging the lead. And speaking about Lead, my Dad a keen fisherman brought enough lead up here in his baggage that the airport security made him empty his case as the xray machine couldn't identify the large mass in his case. They were very understanding and let him on his way.

Here is a picture of St Magnus Cathederal window that my Dad took whilst they were on their visit

Barebraes, good to know you and Hulk are in fine shape, and had a satisfying time with your visiting parents. Such visits can be stressful, but they are also very rewarding.

...or, in some cases, just stressful...

Where o where is Ward hill, ? I visited Shapinsay on three occasions during my visit to Orkney in July but none of the local inhabitants i spoke to could tell me the location of Ward hill, builders working on a house near to the jetty or another man working on his boat in the harbour said they had no idea of it,s where-abouts ,is it a closely guarded secret or did the skipper of the ferry-boat Shapinsay land me at the wrong island. I could see only one hill [a long way from the school] but alas my ageing and arthritic legs would not allow me to walk that far.Never mind, i always have an excuse to visit the islands next year.

You should have asked for Hooch, geoff.turner. I doubt there is more than one of his kind on the island. Find Hooch and, there you are, enfolded by Barebraes and the Hunk aka the Hulk, property of the Dog of the House.

I am sorry you didn't find Ward Hill next time you visit ask for Barebraes or failing that go into the shop at the shore and ask them for directions theres a high possibility that I will be serving in there and could give you a lift to east your aching legs :) Hope to see you soon

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Sorry about the arthritic legs, geoff.turner. Try a hot bath with epsom salt added to the water: I dont' know whether it would help arthritic legs, but it certainly soothes the body after exertion (in the garden or elsewhere). Tell me, where IS washington tyne&wear?

Its near Newcastle isn't it Geoff, The Black country i think, Someone will no doubted put me right if I am wrong :)

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Hi mjc. Washington is approx, midway between Sunderland and Newcastle in the north-east of England and seventy miles from the Scottish border, a new town of almost eighty thousand people it includes the old village of Washington andWashington-old hall, one of the ancestral homes of President George Washington of the U.S.A. The old hall is the venue for July 4th celebrations each year which includes the raising of the Stars and Stripes flag and visits by several American dignitaries including the present on some occasions. i hope this information may be of some interest Regards, Geoff.

Barebraes. Birmingham and Coventry are generally regarded as the black country and are of course on the western side of England but i think that particular descriptive term should no longer be used, a lot of money has been spent on both cities and the surrounding areas and im pleased to say is now regarded as a worth-while tourist location. Incidentally, i think we may have already met.i was in the village shop one day when there was trouble with the electronic till, was it you that repaired it? Geoff.

They do still say Black Country down here - it's not a negative term anymore! One of the Health Trusts is Birmingham and Black Country Mental Health Trust. It's more Sandwell and Wolverhampton side than B'ham and Cov though. I know where Washington is, used to go on school trips to Washington Wildfowl when I lived in the area!

I would think that if you visited the shop before last September then it wouldn't have been me, more likely to be the proprietor of the establishment or her daughter. I am only a part timer :). I was thinking of the Boys from the Black Stuff and apologise for the mix up with the locations , they say you learn something new every day

Will do geoff.turner, and thanks. Maybe I'll drop by when next I visit my alma mater (Durham U./Hatfield College). I like the area very much. How come you got interested in the islands, geoff.turner? Where are you originally from (if I may ask)?
