BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID, THE MASTER AND COMMANDER

Someone recently poised the question to me...,

"Is there ANYTHING that you ARE afraid of?

Well, surely there is something that each of us is afraid of, be it spiders, heights, flying, or confined spaces.

I'm not afraid of spiders or snakes, although if a Black Mamba wanted to bite my B.U.M., I may have to turn the other cheek. and obviously, if a great white shark came swimming close by, getting up close and personal, I may raise an eyebrow or two.

Over the last week there has been some awful news headlines, from young women being murdered, a nine year old girl going missing last week and still remains missing today.

So yes, I am alert and wary more than frightened, of the weather, storms, earthquakes, of terrorists and of psychopathic murderers. But it does not hinder my life.

So, am I frightened of anything at all??

Well, today as I sat watching the frothing, foaming, angry sea, I thought to myself...

I'm afraid of you,

I always was and I always will be.

Cautiously I ventured out into a sheltered bay, the storm carried on at either side of me, but I was safe, protected by rocks, I had found refuge from the storm.

In the mouth of the bay, I stood for a while taking photographs, I did not notice the swirling waters around my feet. The tide was rushing in.

Time and Tide wait for no man

Mindful of a tragedy which happened a few years ago when at least 21 cockle pickers drowned off Morecambe Bay, I hurried to higher ground.

The cockle pickers had not been so lucky. Working diligently far out in the bay, raking the beach for cockles, they had not noticed the incoming tide.

The tide cut off their escape route and in the growing darkness, they became disorientated and instead of walking to safety, they walked back towards the sea.

All 21 poor souls perished.

Today the weather was petulant
Sunny, calm, still, then brooding clouds gathered, a strong gale blowing, the wind moaning.

The billowing waves rolled in, crashing against the rocks
white froth flew high into the air.

The seagulls fought valiantly against the howling wind, the seals had gone into hiding.

The sea is my only master

She is unforgiving, unrelenting
She does not compromise nor will she negotiate

Whatever your colour, black, white, yellow or brown, she will not discriminate. She doesn't care if you are young or old,
A child or Adult
In summer she will lure you with her blue tranquil waters
So smooth and alluring
She is a temptress, but I will not succumb.

The sea has many tales to tell,
She is bountiful and provides for many
She is home to the creatures we love
Otters, seals, dolphins and whales

But she is a formidable foe and
engulfs the feckless and foolhardy.

the sea commands respect
She is the master

She is my master
The Master and Commander

Defy her at your peril.

I'm feeling very sea-sick now.............

Tws from The Loo

Dame Naomi James (the first women to sail solo around the world) lost her husband Rob in a drowning accident - he was also an 茅lite competitive sailor. Someone remarked to her that the sea was "cruel". Her reply was that ".. the just is". It is we humans who endow it with various charcteristics. I respect and love the sea the more it roars and rants, the more I respect it. The Greek word for the "original ocean" is "panthalassa", which has a beautiful, almost onomatopoeic ring to my ears.

Barney from Swithiod the sailor

I was brought up beside the sea and have lived near it all my life. My dad use to say," Fire and water are good servants but terrible masters," and I have felt the same way. I love the sea but there are days when it just scares the proverbial out of me.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. Yes today, Monday 3 March 2008, we had four seasons in one day. Morning, it was almost spring like, I went for a walk to Cliad to see the seal pups which were in their usual place on the rocks. The sun came through, the Sky was blue and it was like summer. As I walked along the beach, the weather changed yet again. purple clouds, heavy with snow, It was like a scene out of Perfect Storm, and then it did snow, Winter. I could see the snow topped mountains on Rum. Anyway, walking back along the beach, the sun re-emerged and it was summer again. My fleece was on then off, then on again. !!! Teatime and it became windy and cold, like Autumn. Well, they say variety is the spice of life !!!

I love the sea too, I respect her, but the power is just awesome. I have spent some of my happiest days, fishing, creeling, catamaran, sailing, watching the basking sharks and one day a sighting of the magnificient Orcas. Perhaps this blog was prompted by too many DVD's. My satellite blew off last week, so I was reliant on my collection of DVD's. First Up - Perfect Storm, then Open Water, Jaws and Adrift. All ending in some kind of tragedy at sea. Strange how films can play tricks on your mind. Perfect Storm and Jaws especially. I did get a fright one day when I went swimming off Union Island in the Grenadines, a very large fish came up to me which looked like a shark, but was in fact a cat fish. Ohhh, how my heart missed a beat !!! tee heee

Naturally no-one would ever be afraid of a catfish. It goes without spraying...
