Electric Picnic 2011 - Warpaint
Cosby Stage, Friday 2nd September, 6.30pm
Describe in a Tweet: Warpaint practiced the art of seduction on the Cosby massive.
What happened: A highlight of the festival so far, the LA chill-rock quartet finally brought the grunge. We'd asked politely for grunge earlier in the day, and suddenly here it was. The tent was packed, and the girls were in fine fettle - working their way through their last album The Fool. A new song was announced, that this reviewer didn't quite catch - mostly down to the over-riding fuzzy, playful sound we've come to know and love. There's a certain pace to a band like Warpaint, and once you get into their rhythm, there's nothing better.
Good Fortune: The allure of Undertow and the seduction Emily Kokal performed on the crowd was mesmerizing. The entire tent swayed and reacted as Warpaint weaved their gorgeous tapestry on stage. The crowd responded with nothing short of undivided attention.
Evil: For peaks like Undertow there was certainly the odd trough. Always hard to keep the attentions of a festival crowd when the music begs for a bit more concentration and patience.
