Cheatin' songs...

Bryan Burnett | 17:40 UK time, Tuesday, 26 August 2008

candi.jpg"My friends tell me there's no future in loving a married man" wails Millie Jackson ( If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right). Well, if that's the case then how come there are so many good songs written about it?
Tonight's theme of fidelity/infidelity looks like being a bit lopsided as the best songs are definitely falling into the infidelity half of the show.
It's Cheating Heart versus Endless Love and I know which one I would rather play. Would you rather hear Candi Staton sing about Mr and Mrs Untrue or listen to Whitney saving all her love for you?
Just like the devil, do the adulterers have all the best tunes?

Agree the best songs are about infidelity.

Did anyone suggest Jolene by Dolly for the infidelity hour?

Please don't ever play the Shep song again Bryan!

Sometimes stating the obvious has its wee place in music programming. Maybe I missed hearing the vindictive masterpiece, Before He Cheats (Again) by Carrie Underwood. It's got to have its place in the Angry-Wronged-Girlfriend pantheon, don't you agree?

My very first post on this blog!

For Wednesday night's theme of harmony:

    Poco Rose of Cimarron
    Eagles Seven Bridges Road
    Crosby,Stills, etc. Southern Cross
Buena Vista Social Club Amor de Loca Juventud
and last but not least, Subdudes Carved in Stone..

And for Thursday night's Changes theme,
    Robert Cray Change of Heart

Oops on the above post--should have put some punctuation between the artist and the song title-hope you can figure these out!

Songs are often about emotions, and emotions are usually related to short-term situations or actions - such as infidelity. The emotions coming out of this may be "good" or "bad", "Yipee I'm in lust / love with a new person" or "Oh dear, I'm going to screw my life up and can't help it".

Songs about longer term situations / conditions are much rarer, and usually relate to a turning point (eg death, illness, even an anniversary). Which is why Country and Western songs tend to have the upper hand in the fidelity stakes (see Hank Williams' particularly nauseating "Mother's Day").

Thus fidelity generally makes much more involving and intriguing songs than poor old boring and tranquil fidelity.

Oops again, last sentence should read "Thus infidelity..."

Help! What's happened to "Listen Again"? Nothing from Monday night or Wednesday. I'm suffereing from withdrawal symptoms as it's the only way I manage to listen to the programme.

Good point Angus and here was me about to mount a campaign for a 7 day a week, three hour show.

I will have to put the campaign on hold until the technical difficulties are resolved to the satisfaction of existing customers.

Hi all, just to apologise to everyone for the listen again facility being on the blink.

Small consolation, I know, but this isn't just affecting Get It On and the backroom boffins are working hard to sort out the iplayer glitches. This means that I don't have a definitive answer as to when things will be back to normal.

As soon as I do, I'll post an update!
