Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 18:13 UK time, Saturday, 23 August 2008

After a fortnight of me interrupting meetings to go off and watch another must see moment of the Olympics, my producers are looking forward to having my full attention for this week's shows...
vandellas.jpgMonday:
Tonight's show features the best of the summermix tapes that we haven't had the chance to feature. This is also your last chance to choose the tunes that remind you of great summers gone by...

Tuesday:
Let's Stay Together and Torn Between Two Lovers could both be played on tonight's show. Kate Steel in East Lothian suggests fidelity and infidelity as a two part theme. Let's have your suggestions for both halves of the show by e-mailing getiton@bbc.co.uk...

Wednesday:
From The Beach Boys to BoyzIIMen, tonight's show celebrates some great vocal harmonies. We should get a wide range of stuff which includes bands like The Magic Numbers as well as classic vocal harmony groups like The Vandellas and The Shangri Las.

Thursday:
Ch-ch-ch-changes is the theme for tonight. Songs about a change of heart, change of mind and even the times that are changin'. Why not leave a comment on the blog with your suggestions...

    Hi Bryan and Co

    Infidelity

Two classics of the genre come to mind:

Walk On By - Leroy Van Dyke
Not the Bacharach song, but the one with the chorus "I love you but we're strangers when we meet"

Go Ö÷²¥´óÐã Girl - Arthur Alexander, and covered by Ry Cooder
Great lyric and tune about the emotional turmoil of a guy in love with his best mate's girlfriend - which one will he let down?

    Fidelity

So many to choose from, but IMHO it's hard to beat early-period Beatles for this genre eg:

    PS I Love You
    And I love Her
    Eight Days A Week
    Things We Said Today
    All My Loving

    Keep on Getting It On!

    Martin,

    Buckie

  • Comment number 3.

    Monday
You’re So Good To Me – The Beach Boys
Baby You’re A Rich Man – The Beatles
Both value for money B-sides which transport the listener to the summers of 66 and 67
    Tuesday
Fidelity - Old Shep – Elvis – If dogs have a heaven......
Two Little Boys – Rolf Harris – not a dry seat in the house
Infidelity – How Much I’ve Lied – Elvis Costello – Steve Nieve transforms this Gram Parsons song into The Attractions’ best performance.
    Wednesday
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys – Only three voices but leaves the rest for dead. OK, strictly this is counterpoint, so shoot me.
    Thursday
Change of Heart – Tom Petty – Obvious but good
A Change is Gonna Come – Sam Cooke – a smooth voice with a bitter finish

  • Comment number 4.

Brilliant suggestions on the posts above - absolutely fantastic.

Keeping it brief as its a bit sad posting on my holiday but hey ho.....

    Monday

Girls in Their Summer CLothes Bruce Springsteen

All that heaven will allow - Bruce Springsteen

Summertime Blues - The Who or Eddie Cochrane

    Norrie temporarily in the States

  • Comment number 5.

    Tuesday:
Fidelity: "If You Ever Have Forever In Mind" - Vince Gill (or play it on Wednesday for the backing harmonies - just the right side of cheesy).

Infidelity: "Ernie (The fastest Milkman In The West)". Never a great Benny Hill fan but, even after all these years, the words "Two-Ton Ted from Teddington" still make me chuckle.

    Wednesday, Harmonies:

The (unaccompanied) harmony singing on Prelude's version of Neil Young's "After The Goldrush" is beautiful.

I love the London Community Gospel Choir's backing on "Tender" by Blur.

The Doo-Wop genre is perfect for songs for this theme..."Get a Job" - The Silhouettes, "I Wonder Why" - Dion and the Belmonts.

Barbershop? Definitely harmony singing there...afraid I don't know any groups except Ö÷²¥´óÐãr Simpson's group The Be-Sharps!

  • Comment number 6.

My suggestions for the Infidelity theme is soul classic At the Dark End of the Street. Loads of artists have covered it but I first heard the Otis Reading version and he sang it beautifully. Just a lovely love song about people sneaking around!

    Sarah from Glasgow

  • Comment number 7.

Harmonies: How could I have forgotten The Ditty Bops, who are so good at close-harmony singing. I love "Wishful Thinking" - lovely clear voices and quirky lyrics.

  • Comment number 8.

A couple of suggestions for Tuesday...

Infidelity - "I Want You Now", "Halo" "One Caress" "Mercy In You" or "Policy of Truth" all from Depeche Mode

Fidelity - "Hard to Beat" - Hard-Fi, "Run Wild" - New Order

And a couple for Thursday, how about "Change" from The Lightning Seeds, (ok it asks the protaganist not to change.)

    G Rhino, Paisley

  • Comment number 9.

    Hello.

    For Tuesday's show...

    Fidelity...

'Me And My Arrow' by Nilsson.
This song was never released as a single in the UK (but a hit in the States) and may have been the b-side of 'Without You'. Perhaps someone knows? Not your usual song about fidelity but a really charming track nonetheless.

    Infidelity...

'Some Fools Mess' by Gallon Drunk.
A single from 1991. Straight to the point when it comes to infidelity but thankfully no rude words. A good one to dance madly around the room to. Singer James Johnston went on to join Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 10.

I tried to resist adding to my earlier blog, but the train journey to work always seems to help me identify "obvious" titles I had somehow overlooked. Apologies - I will seek help!

Infidelity - A soft place to fall by Allison Moorer
She's Gone - Hall and Oates

    Fidelity -
I'll work for your love - Springsteen
Till we ain't strangers anymore by Bon Jovi
"I will dream" or "I had my heart set on you" by Emmylou Harris (both are about one-sided fidelity despite a partner's infidelity)
She's no lady (she's my wife) - Lyle Lovett

Harmony - Long train running by the Doobie Brothers

Change - Baby don't change your mind by Gladys Knight and the Pips

Finally can I second Norrie's long-distance request for Girls in Their Summer Clothes by Springsteen.

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 11.

    Thu, Change:

"The Passing Show" - Ian Dury with typically great Blockeads backing. A looking back at life song. We've changed, but do we regret it?

"Till There Was You" - Peggy Lee (or The Beatles)

"I Couldn't Believe It" - Eddie Kendrick and David Ruffin (woman swears undying love then changes her mind)

"Sure Was Better Back Then" - Steve Forbert

"Different Drum" - Mike Nesmith (about a guy who's decided he won't change so his partner's better off finding someone else more compatible)

"Wake Up" - The Ditty Bops (a "what-if", how would you act if things changed song)

  • Comment number 12.

    Tuesday
Top of the Hit Parade for suffering at the hands of an unfaithful wife has to be Rupert Holmes (probably closely followed by Jim Reeves). He should have sensed that she wasn't Miss Right when he started all that business with the small ads. Talk about rotten luck when he gets to the rendevous only to find his boring missus waiting for him! To make matters worse, despite discovering shared interests in exotic cocktails, champagne and getting drookit in the rain - shortly afterwards he discovers that she's having an affair with Him! And gallous with it. Leaving his fags lying around the place. Mind you, it hard to feel sorry for Rupert, as in spite of the evidence he is still willing to stay with her if she decides to give Him up. Dearame!

    Adam...you need help :-)

  • Comment number 14.

    Wednesday:- You can't exclude Maggie,
    Terre and Suzzy.
' Mr. Sellack ' would be my
    1st choice, but anything by
    the wonderful, fabulous
    Roches would be great.
    Thank you!

  • Comment number 15.

    In / Fidelity night -
JoeKBrown - The Kids from Fame, Hi-Fidelity is an excellent call.
Julie - Ernie makes me laugh too.
    Get it On Bryan!

If not these, then what about 'Learning to do without me', George Jones or Gary Clark. It might work on changes night too, as she's changing her mind about him.

Also Love at the Five and Dime, Nancy Griffiths
The wrong man was convicted, Barenaked Ladies

    Harmonies -
Let it be me, the Everly Brothers
Make my heart fly, The Proclaimers
    Only you, The Flying Pickets

    Changes -
Girl, you'll be a woman soon, Neil ' just a wee bit creepy' Diamond
The day before you came, ABBA

  • Comment number 16.

If we're going all Junior Choicey this week (Ernie, Two Little Boys etc), then you've got to play Mike Reid's Ugly Duckling on Thursday. The greatest song about change ever! Wal-lop.

Julie, I think its Mr Holmes that needs help. Do you think it's because he's called Rupert? Or maybe he's got ginger hair...

Norrie - there was a technical problem tonight with internet streaming.

  • Comment number 21.

Adam: OK, I take it back. It is Rupert who needs the help. Not because of the name, or the hair colour (brown...possibly grey nowadays) but because he looks like a cross between Roger Whittaker and Steve Wright (off the radio).

  • Comment number 22.

Yup Norrie, I'm afraid Joe's right.
Not even I can get it tonight. Best you take a couple of asprins and lie down. Think happy thoughts. I'm sure Bryan's boffins will have it all fixed in the morning. At the very worst they'll post the playlist and the significant inbetween comments, so you'll be alright.
In the meantime, as I'm closest to you right now, feel free to blog if you cant get to sleep. I'll be here for you.

Adam down the road in Rio

  • Comment number 23.

Thanks Joe and Adam down the Road! I am a bit technically challenged at the best of times so that I assumed it was me! Bad enough watching out for those ampersands!

While I'm here might as well add one in I fordgot about and its Justin Currie from his brilliant solo album and Where Did I Go, fantastic track from a truly exceptional album. Virtually all that lp fits!

Virtually all the tracks that spring to mind are the infidelity our ones.....mmmmm!

Posting on a blog where evryones asleep and I cant get to hear....I should worry about myself!!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 24.

ps Adam - I'm on holiday so the asprins are most needed in the morning!

  • Comment number 25.

Norrie - are you one of those people who can't stay away from a computer even though you're supposed to be relaxing on holiday?

You certainly should worry about yourself. The world will keep turning and BB will be available on Listen Again.

    TUESDAY INFIDELITY

In Roxy Music's DANCE AWAY Bryan Ferry wrote about his fiance Jerry Hall when she ran off with Mick Jagger:

"It's funny how, I could never cry
Until tonight, when you pass by
Hand in hand with another guy
You're dressed to kill, And guess who's dying?"

A mate of mine thought the line you're dressed to kill was your breasts do thrill

Ferry also wrote in reply to a chapter in her biography TALL TALES the single KISS AND TELL.

    FIDELITY
    Bryan Ferry Let's Stick Together

  • Comment number 27.

    Tuesday Infidelity

Millie Jackson - If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Wanna Be Right), and then probably just leave the whole of the Unchained album on, dealing as it does with a web of relationships

Fidelity - if glenmiller's going to mention Old Shep, then surely Half Man Half Biscuit's version of Old Tighe should take precedence. Not only is it from the Peel Session vaults, and therefore guaranteed to be a class piece of work, the band manages to stumble through the song until almost the last minute before collapsing in tears of laughter at the sheer improbability of the ghost dog saves young master returning from the war scenario. Country and western never smelt so bad!

  • Comment number 28.

MaxBGold would like to suggest "I'm the man who loves you" by Wilco for the fidelity hour.

MaxBGold agrees that RoxyJohn has made a good call with Bryan Ferry's - Let's stick together.

  • Comment number 29.

I really only wanted to check last night's playlist as I missed 30 minutes, but the temptation is too strong....

    In/fidelity:Still the one - Orleans

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 30.

    Tempted - Squeeze
    Hey Joe - Jimi hendrix
Your Cheatin Heart - Hank Williams

  • Comment number 31.

Oh I forgot - anything by the Proclaimers for Adam in Rio.

He loves them really and was just playing hard to get the other night.

  • Comment number 32.

How are you holding up Norrie?
It appears that rogue footballing island in the streaming has really screwed up the space time continuum of Get It On. Still no sign of last night's show. Just hang on in there though.
You picked a great time to go on holiday right enough.

C'way Bryan what's going on? We've got a blogger stuck in some hotel, motel, Holiday Inn bedroom and he needs his fix. He's spending a fortune on room service fast food waiting for the last summer mix. We dont want Norrie doing an Elvis impersonation you know.

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 33.

    hi everyone

    suggestions for harmonies;

Caravan of Love - Housemartins (always reminds me of Christmas but in a good way)
Tears In The Morning or Deirdre - Beach Boys (Bryan I feel tonight will be difficult for anyone that doesn't like the Beach Boys won't it?!!)

Great show last night for fidelity/non fidelity. Well done team!

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 34.

    WEDNESDAY HARMONIES

Bryan Ferry does some great harmonies with himself on the country tinged Roxy Music song "End Of The Line" and also on the Roxy top 5 hit "Oh Yeah"

    for THURSDAY CHANGES

Of course Bowie's "Changes" is an obvious starter.
Is this my chance to have Roxy Music's opener on their debut album "Re-make/Re-model" played?

Bryan Ferry's version of "The Times They Are-A Changin" or his version of the Crickets song "Don't Ever Change"

  • Comment number 35.

Oops, I think I meant Millie Jackson's "Hung Up" album, but never mind it was terrific to hear it on radio.

    Harmonies

    Buzzcocks "Harmony in my Head"
CSNY "Judy Blue Eyes Suite" kind of sets the benchmark
The Poozies' version of XTC's "Love on a Farm Boy's Wages" should also satisfy your Kate Rusby craving for this week, Bryan?

  • Comment number 36.

MaxBGold is today thinking that Eldorado by ELO has some interesting harmonies that could be shared on air.

  • Comment number 37.

oops, MaxBGold forgot to mention "And Your Bird Can Sing" by The Beatles.

  • Comment number 38.

    Some country harmonies -

Angel Band or Calling my Children Ö÷²¥´óÐã - Ralph Stanley

I'll Fly Away - Alison Krauss and Gillian Welsh

  • Comment number 39.

okay-i will get the hang of this blog thing eventually--posted my last comment in the wrong thread-very embarrassing.
Great "harmony" songs would have to include Crosby Stills etc.Southern Cross
    Poco. Rose of Cimarron
Buena Vista Social Club. Amor de Loco Juventud
    Eagles. Seven Bridges Road
and an obscure-but-they-shouldn't-be band from Austin called Subdudes with a song called Carved in Stone.
    Please--not too much Beach Boys!!!

For the Changes theme, there's Robert Cray's Change of Heart.
For a new theme idea, how about songs with words you wouldn't expect to find in a lyric??(Such as You're so Vain..what other song would have the word ""strategically in it!)

  • Comment number 40.

    Hi Bryan,

Another great show tonight. Lot's of good choices so far.

How about playing "Diamonds on the Soles of Shoes" by Paul Simon?

    Thanks,

    Brian, Edinburgh.

  • Comment number 41.

    Bryan

I am sure that you will get tons tonight for Bowie and Dylan.

    So I'll go for:
    The Changeling - The Doors
A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke(time for protest songs again?)
Feeling Good - Nina Simone ('a new dawn, a new day, a new life ...)

Or Turning Japanese - Vapours(misunderstood songs?!)

    Cheers

    Andy

  • Comment number 42.

    Hi all
I am with Andy, only one song for me tonight and that is Sam Cooke, A Change is Gonna Come.

    Maria in Stirling

p.s. what is up with Listen Again, can only seem to get Tuesdays show or Thursday 21st on the iplayer??

  • Comment number 43.

I think tonight's theme of 'change' is a stroke of genius. Change is essentially what drives us forward in life, so many of the best songs, poems, movies, plays and so on will be about change. So it should be a really great show - I shall be sending in my list!

  • Comment number 44.

BB - gonna have to do something about this listen again issue. There are listeners hanging by their fingertips from the highest buildings in the land cause they can't get their GIO fix.

See if you can get the boffins to Change the set up and get it back online.

    Tunes for tonight -
Nina Simone - Feeling Good (everything was good for her)
    Pulp - Something changed
The Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn
The Scorpions - Winds of Change (must have been the sprouts)
Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air

  • Comment number 45.

Hi all, just to apologise to everyone for the listen again facility being on the blink.

Small consolation, I know, but this isn't just affecting Get It On and the backroom boffins are working hard to sort out the iplayer glitches. This means that I don't have a definitive answer as to when things will be back to normal.

As soon as I do, I'll post an update!

Hang on in there and please don't do anything rash, EC!

  • Comment number 46.

MaxBGold is off the firm opinion that Sam Cooke's - A Change is Gonna Come should be a nailed on cert for tonights show.

  • Comment number 47.

MaxBGold was surely trying to wind certain of us up with his suggestion of El Dorado for last night.

    Changes -

    Stranglers - Something Better Change
Bernard Butler - A Change of Heart (one of Donna's favourite singers and albums if you want to earn me some brownie points please, Bryan)
    Hawkwind - Wind of Change
    Devo - Turn Around

  • Comment number 48.

    Hello.

    For Thursday's show.

How about 'Changes' by The Zombies?

From the album 'Odyessey and Oracle' it's a memorable and striking track.

    Also for the Changes theme...

'Treason' by The Teardrop Explodes which starts with the memorable line, 'I've been living through changes and I could swing for you'. Once heard never forgotten.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 49.

Nothing rash going on here ProducerMandi but my fingertips are beginning to slide.

  • Comment number 50.

I am almost letting go too Mandi! Missed Wednesdays Harmonies show and thats the only one that the player doesn't seem to like....oh no, only heard 3 out 4 shows this week, how will I carry on EC?! It all seemed to run much better when you just clicked on Listen Again without the iplayer being involved...we don't like change!

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 51.

I've started this message a few times...and am very conscious that the news I have to impart isn't good, people.

The iPlayer has suffered a loss of many programmes across all Ö÷²¥´óÐã services while it's been upgraded to allow greater capacity. The amount lost is such that, with the resources to hand, I've been told it's unlikely we will be able to reinstate missing programmes.

In plain, if you missed Get It On on Monday or Wednesday, it's unlikely to appear on the iplayer now.

Let's look to the future and a theme running across all 4 nights next week...so much to hang on for!

    Producer Mandi x

  • Comment number 52.

    Mandi

Missed part of last night's show. What is the theme for next week?

  • Comment number 53.

Aye you just can't beat the wonders of modern technology. But wouldn't you just like to beat the wonders out of the IT boffins who're never happy leaving something that works alone.
Hands up fellow bloggers - who has at one time or another been taken offline due to some well meaning IT soul trying to make things "better".
No listen again for so many of last weeks shows. I can see the window sills filling up now.
Suppose it would be inappropriate to play Van Halen's Jump!!
