Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 11:37 UK time, Sunday, 16 November 2008

Thanks to everyone who supported Children In Need last week and a special thank you to the regulars who came down to say hello on Friday night. I am looking forward to getting 'back to normal' this week and I think we've got some good themes lined up for you...

stonethecrows.jpg

Monday:
Mine is 'Judy Garland', Barbara's is 'Maggie Bell' and Kirsten's is 'John Paul Jones from Led Zep...but who was born on your birthday? That's the theme for tonight as we look forward to Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Scotland's 30th. Text or call during the show or why not leave a comment on the blog and if you can't think of one tell us what day you were born on and we'll find you a celebrity to blow out the candles with...

Tuesday:

Julie in the Borders suggested 'first' and 'last' as a theme. Tonight we'll do First Kiss and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face....

Wednesday:

...which means tonight we'll do Always The Last To Know. What do you want to hear? Email your suggestions to getiton@bbc.co.uk

Thursday:

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Scotland is 30 years old at the weekend so tonight we turn back the clock to the year we came on air. 1978 is the theme so e-mail or blog with your memories of '78.

GIO Team - I thought last weeks shows were fantastic, it was obviously very hard work for you all so well done!

I am very lucky to have 2 good artists for 14 Decemeber:

Mike Scott, Waterboys - Whole of The Moon is always a great song to hear but a bit overplayed so how about The Big Music as it features Eddie Reader or The Thrill Is Gone which is my favourite Waterboys track.

Beth Orton - she plays an absolutely great cover of Stolen Car. Would love to hear that.

May I make Bowie and Elvis picks for them (8 January):

Elvis picks Golden Years as Bowie apparently wrote this for him.

    Bowie picks - Little Sister.

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 2.

    Hi All

I'll second Norries comments re last week, great shows and well done to all the team.

I share my birthday with Chris Cornell so I would love to hear "Jesus Christ Pose" by Soundgarden but as something a little more listener friendly I would settle for "Black Hole Sun" which is also a great track.

    Thanks

    Maria

p.s. My birthday is July 20th :-) Remember after first singles and occupations I said it felt like a first date? Here we go again!

  • Comment number 3.

    MONDAY

'Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing' - Chris Isaak

Chris and I were born on June 26th
He is, of course, much older than me.
In fact, he's old enough to be my...........

    ...............big brother!

    TUESDAY

'First Thing In The Morning' - Kiki Dee

    WEDNESDAY

'The Last Chance Texaco' - Rickie Lee Jones

  • Comment number 4.

Willie Nelson covers bot Tuesday and Wed:

Willie Nelson - Last Thing I Needed First Thing THis Morning

Absolute classic Willie Nelson - worth the admitance for Willies delivery of the opening few words.

  • Comment number 5.

    Norrie,
Tues and Wed also both covered by The Sisters of Mercy - First Last and Always. Guess which one BB will play!

I'm off to research my Birthday Buddy now ;-)

  • Comment number 6.

Ali - maybe they will play both? Thats a good Sisters track, its the only Sisters album I have I must admit.

  • Comment number 7.

    THURSDAY

Glen and I wish to know if there will be a rerun of the nadir that was Smash Hits theme night.
If so, we shall be ensconced in the Mohawk and Safety - Pin.

  • Comment number 8.

    Hi,
Birthday Buddies... Below are the results of my search and suggested songs for Monday:

    Tommy 17 Sept:

Fee Waybill of The Tubes (checked them out on YouTube...Hmm)
    Bebe Winans, a gospel singer

    Ali 1 Oct:

Keith Duffy of Boyzone( I mean, REALLY!!)
Jerry Martini of Sly and the Fam.
    Julie Andrews

    Eve 14 Feb:

Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 (don't know much about them)

    Aedan 29 June

    Ian Paice of Deep Purple
    Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls

Think it's safe to say Aedan's Buddy wins and I don't mean Pussycat Dolls, he wouldn't appreciate them anyway.

So BB can we get some Deep Purple on for our rocking 4 year old,Highway Star or Hush would be good.

    Cheers

  • Comment number 10.

Roger Waters, of course, had nothing to do with High Hopes but he was there in spirit.

  • Comment number 11.

I also share my birthday with Christopher Brookmyre, with whom I once shared a toilet.

  • Comment number 12.

  • Comment number 14.

    Mon.

Trent Reznor & the Nine Inch Nails with Hurt

  • Comment number 15.

    Glen, I'm hurt!
Surely you won't allow a Welsh girl to drive a wedge between us?

    Besides which, it's your round.

  • Comment number 18.

Forgive me Glen, for I have sinned.
When we went for the matching tattoos, I got a dabbity.

  • Comment number 19.

    MON:
On the non-musical front I'm quite happy with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Garfield Sobers, Beatrix Potter, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Earl Tupper (the inventor of Tupperware!) and Marcel Duchaump...plus it being the anniversary of the first potato arriving in Britain!!!).

Not quite so much on the music front:

Rudy Vallee...about whom I know nothing except that he used to sing through a megaphone.

Rachel Sweet - born on exactly the same day as me. Her most well-known song is probably B.A.B.Y but she also sang the theme tune to the original, John Waters version of Hairspray which is fun.

Peter Doyle of The New Seekers - "Never Ending Song of Love" reminds me of car journeys with my two sisters and us trying to recreate the harmonies in the chorus.

Bit more street-cred with Mike Bloomfield, guitarist on Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited".

The daughter (who wishes to remain nameless) shares a birthday with Mick Jones of The Clash (and also with Scotch Git!!!). She would like to hear "Should I Stay Or Should I Go".

  • Comment number 20.

    Hi guys.

Thoroughly enjoyed all of last week's programmes. Great job and loads of money raised for the bairns! Check out Vic's Pudsey Party from just before 20 minutes in... LOL

My choices for this week are as follows!

    Monday - Birthdays:
I share my birthday with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, so will not hesitate to recommend 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana! Fantastic track!

    Tuesday - 'First':
You're The First, The Last, My Everything - Barry White (Works for Wed as well!)

    Wednesday - 'Last':
This Is The Last Time - Keane

    Thursday - 1978:
Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs - Brian and Michael

  • Comment number 21.

I was quite pleased to discover that I share my birthday - 6 February - with some great musicians (and others!):

Bob Marley - No woman no cry
    Kate McGarrigle - Go Leave
Natalie Cole, - Miss You Like Crazy
Jerry Marotta, a member of Orleans - Dance with me
Axl Rose of Guns & Roses - Sweet Child o' Mine
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

    Please don't play Rick!

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 22.

It seems I share my birthday (26 June) with more famous GIO bloggers and listeners (Scotch Git and Julie from Edinburgh's daughter) than great musicians.

However, I was born on exactly the same day as Mick Jones of the Clash. Julie's daughter's shout for Should I Stay or Should I Go is good - but I would probably prefer (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais or Janie Jones.

One other possibility for 26 June is Georgie Fame. Sitting in the Park or Moody's Mood for Love would be fine (but not Yeh, Yeh - please).

  • Comment number 23.

Well, well - twa tawties on the same day.

Monday - I share my birthday with John Cleese and Simon Le Bon, so unless its The Lumberjack Song I guess we'd better go with the Duran Duran brothers.
    "Rio" is appropriate I suppose.
Curiously enough they are playing a gig here this Saturday. Havent bought my ticket yet.......

  • Comment number 24.

    Birthday Buddy

Lyndsey de Paul - sugar me

    Tuesday

First of the Gang to die - Morrissey

    Wednesday

Last of the famous international playboys - Morrissey

    1978 is coming soon!

  • Comment number 25.

22nd May and having researched loads of composers whom I've never heard of apart from Wagner I the found the following

    Jerry Dammers
    Bernie Taupin
    Morrisey

Therefore it's either Death Ride of the Valkyries or Pressure Drop by The Specials.

Never noticed Lynsey De Paul, but there's no song there I'd request.

  • Comment number 26.

    TUE. FIRST:
Bananarama - "Love in the first degree"

    WED. LAST:
KLF - "Last train to trancentral"

THU - 1978 - One of my favourite years - I was 16...I loved punk, new wave and reggae, went to loads of concerts, bought loads of singles...I may have to venture into the cupboard under the stairs again...expect a list!

  • Comment number 27.

Bobby - like you I am looking forward to 1978, for my musical tatse that has the potential to be a great show, though I have to say a quick scan of the Number 1's from 1978 is extremely unpromising!

Good couple of Mozz tracks suggested, the live version of Playboys on the recent greatest hits is great, another good Last track would be

Smiths - Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me.

  • Comment number 28.

Aaah. What nuggets you find when researching for themes. When? 8th September.
Who? Pink, Jose Feliciano, and Frank Tovey amongst others who include Patsy Cline. Frank Who? Think Fad Gadget..... different anyway.
I'd settle for Jose and Light My Fire

Runnerman6 formerly known as Davie from Cardross

  • Comment number 29.

Finding out who you share your birthday has been quite interesting. I don't think that I really want to hear Serge Gainsborough or Bananarama (Keren Woodward) so it comes down to a choice between Emmylou Harris or Marvin Gaye.

Despite my leanings towards country music, Emmylou has to lose out - but only because she is 5 years older than me but looks 10 years younger!

Marvin Gaye has put out some great stuff but how about "Abaham, Martin and John" which doesn't get a lot of airplay but, to me, is a better version than Dion's.

  • Comment number 30.

    Monday Birthday Night -

Not only do I wait all year for my birthday (Dec 24th), my birthday buddies are a pretty strange combo -

Ace of Spades - Lemmy from Motorhead

    She Bangs - Ricky Martin

Working in a Coal Mine - Lee Dorsey

You Must have Been A Beautiful Baby - Harry Warren (composer)was born on my birthday.

Alternatively, the number one song on the day I was born was 'Merry Xmas Everybody' by Slade ( for the very first time). Or is that a theme for another night?

I reckon Lemmy is my best bet for tonight, unless someone can think of something better?
    :)

  • Comment number 33.

It would be good to hear that one Kirsty. I think that it was on "The Tube" that Lemmy was larking around and really got up Muriel Gray's nose. She came close to losing her temper with him but cut him down to size beautifully by telling him that it was pretty obvious why he was called a lemon. :-)

  • Comment number 34.

    Ah, order is restored!

I've done something wrong in a past life (or maybe even this one!).

July 15th - birth date of Joe Satriani, Jason Bonham and Linda Ronstadt :-(

Oh! Also Ian Curtis (I'd do a smiley but that's not necessarily appropriate for the doomy ones), so could we please have "Ceremony" by Joy Division just to bring the mood down a bit?

  • Comment number 35.

    Norrie, Julie,

Canny wait for 1978, I was 16 and left school in the summer to go into the shipyards. Anthem of the year was God Save the Queen, however here's my list (see which ones were taken from John Peels Festive Fifty!)

God Save the Queen - Sex Pistols
    White Man - The Clash
    Deacon Blues - Steely Dan
Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill
Alternative Ulster - Stiff Little Fingers
If I can't Have You - Yvonne Elliman
Alison - Elvis (who my dogs named after!)
Switch - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Shot by Both Sides - Magazine
    Desolation Row - Bob Dylan

I'm sure there will be more!

  • Comment number 36.

#34 - Harry, Linda Ronstadt is pretty cool... No problem with that one at all!

  • Comment number 37.

    Birthday:
Marc Bolan and Buddy Rich. And Radio One (a year before me)

Any of the following would be just peachy:
    Children of the Revolution
    Life's an Elevator
    Truck on (Tyke)
    Jeepster

    The Beat Goes On

And for the R1 link: Flowers in the Rain

  • Comment number 38.

Re. No 11 - glenmiller, would you care to explain or expand (and there is a very obvious follow-on question there which I will not deign to ask)?

Tuesday - "Summer the First Time" (the Millie Jackson version, of course)

Wednesday - Joni Mitchell "The Last Time I Saw Richard"

Thursday - I quite liked 1978 (I think) - learning to smoke, drink and make (semi) sensible conversation with girls.

    Bob Marley - Kaya
Radio Birdman - Anglo Girl Romance
Jim Morrison feat. The Doors - Ghost Song (from the rediscovered "American Prayer")
The Stranglers - Nice & Sleazy
    Tom Waits - Kentucky Avenue
    Wire - Outdoor Miner
    The Adverts - Bored Teenagers
X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents
Steel Pulse - Ku Klux Klan
    Todd Rundgren - Onomatopeia
    Devo - Satisfaction
    Kevin Ayers - Hat Song
    Hawklords - The Flying Doctor

Oh, you could fill a whole week with good stuff from '78.

  • Comment number 39.

    # 36 - Jim, I have one LR album (inherited from ex) which I would have to say is godawful.

    # 35 - Bobby, you were a year behind the times, maaaan.

  • Comment number 40.

MONDAY -- I share my birthday, April 16, with Nick Berry, but I will not torture everyone by asking for the theme tune to "Heartbeat" or the thing he recorded when he was Wicksy on "EastEnders." My superior birthday buddy is Dusty Springfield, so how about "I Only Want To Be With You"?

    Rich in North Carolina

  • Comment number 41.

Harry - did you ever see the Linda Ronstadt album cover (forget the name) where she is wearing roller skates? Forget the music! Phwoarrrr...... :-)

  • Comment number 42.

    Wednesday:
    Last Nite - The Strokes
The Last Farewell - Roger Whittaker

  • Comment number 43.

    Norrie,

I'm going for a long lie down!

I will rely on my singles collection tonight when I get home for a more accurate list!

  • Comment number 44.

Bobby - I am with you on 78......I apologise to all in advance but I am going to do a list for this theme. It will be a good one!

Typing this from London on a 3 day music trip ending with a great gig in Piccadily tomorrow night with Andy Mackay And The Metaphors

I share the same birthday (20th may) with Nick Heyward (I love the fretless bass on 'Whistle Down The Wind') and also huge Roxy fan John Taylor of Duran Duran.

Also born then was the very talented Lucy Wilkins who has played with many artists and also was the violin player on Roxy Music's 2001 tour. If you can dig out Roxy Music Live you hear a great soaring violin solo on 'Out Of The Blue' failing that you can hear her on Ferry's version of 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' from the 'Frantic album.

  • Comment number 47.

    Tuesday FIRST

Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera 'Initial Speed'

    Wedensday LAST

    2 for 1 tomorrow & Wednesday

    First Week/Last Week...Carefree – Talking Heads

  • Comment number 54.

Norrie - work got in the way of the show today and I haven't had a chance to listen again yet. Did they play Beth Orton for you? I wanted to second that vote, but didn't have a chance to get to the blog until now.

  • Comment number 55.

Maria - Great call pp arnold, totally forgot to include that.

Danielle - i am afraid not, no Beth, no Waterboys :o(, hope it was good busy at your end!

  • Comment number 56.

Norrie - that's too bad. I really do like her. I had actually requested that song for the car theme show too. I guess I'll just have to listen to my copy tonight. Have a great night!

  • Comment number 57.

    First night -

Love in the First Degree , Bananarama - great shout Julie!

First Picture of You, The Lotus Eaters

First Time , Robin Beck (remember that soft drink ad...?)

My First, My Last, My Everything , Barry White

    Last night -

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, Indeep

Last Train to Clarksville, The Monkees

Save the Last Dance For Me, The Drifters

Or what about Band of Gold by Freda Payne as that was the first and last time she saw her new husband!

  • Comment number 58.

    Bryan

Was I just very tired driving home last night - or did you really miss out Rio completely (having given it a huge build up for Adam) - and call Arthur Ashe something rather rude? Anyway, thanks for playing the Clash.

For tonight - One of these Things First - Nick Drake

For tomorrow - Last of the Hobo Kings - Mary Gauthier (a great, great story song about Steam Train Maury)
Or - I'm Down to my Last Cigarette - kd lang

  • Comment number 59.

    Tonight

First Cut is the Deepest - PP Arnold definitely
    First Impressions - Fischer Z
There Goes My First Love - Drifters
First We take Manhattan - Leonard Cohen

BobbyfromHowood great call on Alison by Elvis Costello fro 1978, one of my all time favourites, though it totally failed to impress a young lady of that name in Miami in 1980. Glad you reminded me it was 1978, my memories of late seventies early 80's are pretty hazy due too far too much partying.

Jimfraeerskine Linda Ronstadt in roller skates was on the album Living in the USA and like many of her covers and pictures was enough to get a young man’s hormones in overdrive!. I think she gets a lot of unfair criticism these days. She did some good stuff including a version of First Cut is the Deepest, but at the moment I can’t remember if it’s god enough to consider before PP Arnold

  • Comment number 60.

    Ha Ha Harry,
nice to have you back on the blog.
RE#11 I also was tempted to ask THAT question.

    FIRST:
Sticking with First Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy, alternatively for a laugh could we have I Am A Rock by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Looks like 1978 is going to be a busy night. Oor Tommy is working on a list, as I was only 10 that year my music knowledge is limited. I was still mourning the death of Elvis! However I will second Harry's request for Flying Doctor by The Hawklords. Excellent choice H.

  • Comment number 61.

I can beat that Ali, I was only 6!
However, I was lucky to have older siblings to influence me so you never know what might be on my suggestions ;-)

  • Comment number 62.

    First -

    ALAN JACKSON - First Love
    SADE - Frankie's First Affair

    Last -

ROLLING STONES - The Last Time
    RODNEY CROWELL - Last Waltz
MAMAS AND PAPAS - I Saw Her Again Last Night

  • Comment number 63.

The two night themes seem quite popular - has Left and Right been done?

  • Comment number 64.

My attention has been brought to #11, a quite bizarre admission whcih really should be expanded. I mean was this just in the same area, so to speak, or was it a cheek each?

Let's save it for the General Election.......

    Think Amsterdam. Think Marathon.
    Think, 'who took that photie?'

Bryan swears a big boy did it and ran away.
As usual, it's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.
Still, it's not the end of the world!

  • Comment number 67.

glenmiller has gone very quiet though....

For Wednesday can I take the opportunity to also punt "The Last Film" by Kissing the Pink. A strange and wonderful chart record from the 80s.

Not many of those in the pound is there?

  • Comment number 68.

Thursday - As we did a lot of the 1978 stuff a few weeks ago on the Smash Hits show I thought I'd look at the albums of that year. And lo! Probably the finest live album ever came out that year "Live and Dangerous" by Thin Lizzy (alright some of it was touched up in the studio, but still a belter of an record). I'd go for "Cowboy Song" from it but if you want something more people would know then "Dont Believe a Word". But be daring and go for the former.
I went to see them tour that album and got back stage at the Edinburgh Odeon to meet them after the show.
Oh and Maria, fyi, I was 16.

  • Comment number 69.

    Adam

Tony Visconti also produced Bowies live album Stage that year - two very touched up albums. Breaking Glass from the live ep.

  • Comment number 70.

C'mon glen, out with it...bad choice of phrase, I admit.

  • Comment number 71.

Decided not to fight my way to the back of the cupboard to find my singles - think I bought these in 1978:

"Hey Lord, Don't Ask Me Questions" - Graham Parker and the Rumour

"Fantasy" - Earth Wind and Fire

"Whoops a Daisy" by Humphrey Ocean and the Hardy Annuals. Humphrey Ocean was in Kilburn and the High Roads with Ian Dury (who wrote the words to this single - the other side is a so-bad-it's-(almost) good version of The Ballad of Davey Crockett). He's now an acclaimed portrait painter who's been hung in the National Gallery (ouch!).

"What a Waste" - Ian Dury and the Blockheads

"Follow You Follow Me" - Genesis

    "Identity" - X-Ray Spex

    "Love You More" - Buzzcocks

"If the kids are united" - Sham 69

    "Tommy Gun" - The Clash

I'm having to exercise much restraint here -I could very easily compile the Mother of all lists...1978 was a very rich year, musically speaking...just so many good songs to choose from. I may not be able to resist adding more...

AFR - are you stalking me? Not only were we both at the same Big Country gig but we were both at the same Thin Lizzy gig. Was great wasn't it...i feel very lucky to have seen both Phil Lynott and Bon Scott in concert (though not at the same time!). Wasn't the Odeon a great venue.

Thin Lizzy, rmember seeing them live, great gig and my hearing took days to get back to normal. Phil RIP!

  • Comment number 74.

Phil Lynott wore the best Rock-Star Trousers!!!

  • Comment number 75.

Care to elaborate on that Julie?

  • Comment number 76.

Ooooh! Came over all girly there!!! Anyway...some musicians wear items of clothing that just look the part e.g Justin Currie when he used to wear proper rock-star cuban-heeled boots onstage, and I think that Phil Lynott's leather trousers were the best lead-singer, rock-star-trousers ever.

Your mind is in the gutter!

As if the speculation surrounding Glen was not enough.

Maybe Christopher will reveal the truth in his next book.

  • Comment number 86.

He could call it 'Keep Yir Haun Oan Yir Ha'penny'

  • Comment number 87.

Jim: I hope you're being serious and they're nice chunky manly heels and not kitten ones. If so...that's just made my day.

Angus: Don't lower the tone :0)

    Glen,
The toilet was at Love Street, wasn't it?

  • Comment number 89.

Now now Scotch...how would you know that ? LOL

  • Comment number 90.

Doing some research and was reminded of something else released in 1978...no matter how much I loved punk etc. The Band's "The Last Waltz" still contains some of the best performances ever - if it's on TV, no matter how late I have to stay up to watch it all.

  • Comment number 91.

Julie - maybe our paths crossed a few times in Edinburgh in years gone by.

  • Comment number 92.

    AFR - what a thought!

  • Comment number 93.

    Julie

If you'd crossed paths with AFR you would have remembered.
