    TUESDAY

    'Four Stone Walls' - Capercaillie

  • Comment number 2.

    TUESDAY

'Fire at Midnight' - Jethro Tull

unless you want to play it tomorrow instead.............

  • Comment number 3.

    MONDAY

'So Far Away' - Carole King

For the most precious girls in my life, Susan and Jessi.

  • Comment number 4.

Another thought for Wednesday is the Theme from Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. Don't know who it was by but think David Bowie was in the film

  • Comment number 5.

Jim - it was Ryuichi Sakamoto who recorded the song. Always been a favourite of mine. His music has bags of style.

  • Comment number 6.

The home one could be pretty much the collected works of Runrig & The Sawdoctors... Prizes[1] to anyone suggesting up-tempo songs for the night.

    Meantime, my list:
Roger Waters: Ö÷²¥´óÐã (good list of what 'home' can mean to people)
    Dean Owens: Raining in Glasgow
Peter Nardini: A River Without You
    Sawdoctors: Galway and Mayo
Billy Bragg: A13, Trunk Road to the Sea (Essex version of Route 66)
    Easy Club: Old Toon Shuffle
Christy Moore: Go Move Shift (for those not allowed one)
Runrig: The Cutter or I'll Keep Coming Ö÷²¥´óÐã
    Slade: Take Me Bak 'ome

[1] In the current Ö÷²¥´óÐã style of non-prizes for competitions they're not actually running.

  • Comment number 7.

For Ö÷²¥´óÐã night, sorry that again it is a Mary Chapin Carpenter track, but her Almost Ö÷²¥´óÐã is an absolutely fantastic track written with Annie Roboff and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Any MCC fans er CD single of this is worth trying to tracj down as she does a stunning verion of Dancing In The Dark.

Hope this gets played, my favourite MCC song I think.

  • Comment number 8.

Not many suggestions for Monday so far! I'd like to send a presie to the GiO team. Choose one from:

    'Music' by John Miles

  • Comment number 9.

#9 Scotch yuo are right, hope she will be at this party I am off to tonight. I admit its unlikley!!

  • Comment number 12.

Norrie - you bring a tear to my eye. That was very sweet of you!

  • Comment number 13.

I forgot MrChops The Dwarf, his new wee choplet must be here by now! Bob Dylan - Precious Angel.

  • Comment number 14.

ah Norrie, how generous of you :-)

I would like to gift the track "Sleep" by Texas feat Paul Buchanan to my patient and fantastic better half Donald.

He is the best mate I could ask for and also puts up with all my endless chat about themes and GIO! It would be a proper thank you to him for introducing me to the show.

  • Comment number 15.

    Tuesday

Joha Lewie - Stop the Cavalry

"Wish I was at home for Christmas"

    U2 - New Year's Day

"All is quiet on New Year's day" - I hope so, there's no excuse for a hangover out here.

  • Comment number 16.

Norrie - #10 - what a brilliant list! Very clever indeed! Cheers mate and all the best for the holiday season! Basically, that list could cover the entire show with several tracks left over! :-)

  • Comment number 17.

Maz - #14 - I'd like to dedicate the Texas track to all the bloggers and the entire GIO team. I know Paul Buchanan and he's a really nice guy. How much would you take for his moby number? (only kidding! LOL)

  • Comment number 18.

Good list Norrie. You should be given 'Guitar Man'. I think our resident grumps, Waldorf and Stadler, must have the Muppets theme tune played for them. Or 'Rio' for Adam and 'Take it EC' for the North Sea. We could also have 'JimfaeErskine Bridge over troubled waters'

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 19.

    Monday

Aside from simply seconding Norrie's list, I'd like to suggest 'We're Going To Be Friends' by The White Stripes. Gifted to friends old and new.

    Tuesday

Long Way Ö÷²¥´óÐã - Tom Waits

  • Comment number 20.

DC - #18 - Bridge Over Troubled Waters is a beautiful song, and the first song that ever made me genuinely weep at the wonder that such artistry is possible in the world. Thank you! I hope it is played.

  • Comment number 21.

Norrie - I thought someone might do a list for the GIO regular bloggers and i'm grateful it was you 'cos i thought it'd be EC or AFR with sarky (but no doubt funny) suggestions. Thanks for my gift - good choice.

For my gift I'd suggest The Ditty Bops song "Wake Up"...for the daughter...and not just because that's what I yell about 50 times every school morning. It starts by focussing on the cliched and restricting advice It's so easy to give to one's children but I'd prefer her to follow the advice at the end...what you could do..."Breath deep, speak out, make up your mind, be brave, follow your dreams, listen to your heart, close your eyes, make a wish". I know it's corny but hey! It's Christmas and nearing the end of another year - bet we all get a bit philosophical at this time.

  • Comment number 22.

    JFE

Inspired choice - one of my favourites.

  • Comment number 23.

Scotch-git has to have 'Whisky in the jar' (OK, the pedants will have noticed that I've taken licence with the spelling)

However, I think this dedication theme should be opened up eg Richard Branson and 'Ticket to the Moon' by ELO, or Van Morrison's 'Half as much' for Alastair Darling

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 24.

    Tuesday:

"Better Be Ö÷²¥´óÐã Soon" -- Crowded House
(always been my favorite Neil Finn song)

Norrie, great suggestion on Mary Chapin Carpenter's "Almost Ö÷²¥´óÐã" -- I agree, it's one of her best songs. Another great MCC song that fits Tuesday's theme is "Going Ö÷²¥´óÐã," the hidden bonus track at the end of her "Time*Sex*Love" album (and my favorite song on that record).

Thanks too for the wonderful list of gift songs for the GiO bloggers and staff!

  • Comment number 25.

Heh, norrie - you got me on the folk side of my sensibilities too. Trying to remember whose voice Natalie's reminds me of.

Is that the version on Ophelia?

  • Comment number 26.

Capt - I made a mistake! It should have been Bread and Circuses!! Thats what I get for not checking, still if nothing else it shows I am not googling!!

The version of Thick as Thieves I like is on her retrospective CD, Natalie solo on the piano.

  • Comment number 27.

    wednesday

'( what's so funny 'bout ) peace love and understanding' Elvis Costello. Doesn't that sum it up?

or as a complete contrast the great version of 'over the rainbow/ what a wonderful world' from the soundtrack of Meet Joe Black' by Israel Kamakawaweole ( or words to that effect )

  • Comment number 28.

bob - that's also the version of over the rainbow that closed Life on Mars.

  • Comment number 29.

#27 and 28. I LOVE him singing that song - he was a huge Hawaiian man with a beautifully sweet voice. It was also on the soundtrack to 50 first dates. His surname is spelled Kamakawiwo'ole (but don't ask me how to pronounce it!!!). Not being pedantic...just best to get it right so the producer can find it easily.

  • Comment number 30.

    Dear Producer: it's here:

  • Comment number 31.

...I rushed out (to iChoons) and bought it about 20 seconds after Life on Mars ended.

  • Comment number 32.

Monday: What I would wish for everyone at Christmas time -

"Life, Love and Happiness" by Brian Kennedy

    Tuesday: Simple, really -

"Ö÷²¥´óÐã" by Michael Buble... ahhhh lovely!

    Have a good 'un!

(This is Julia, not Jonathan, by the way!! He'll kill me for making him look like such a soppy fool, haha!!)

  • Comment number 34.

    That was funny! LOL

  • Comment number 35.

    Julia,
So nice to hear from you. How's the baby?

I'll never forget the time you said that the new Ö÷²¥´óÐã building looked like the box that the Armadillo came in. Priceless!!

  • Comment number 36.

#24 Rich I am shocked beyond beleif. MCC is one of my all time favourite artists and I have listened to time sex love since it came out many many times. Never heard the hidden stuff before! And that is a great track. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • Comment number 37.

Could I also say that Springsteens Long Walk Ö÷²¥´óÐã is a fantastic song and Southside Johnny I Dont Want To Go Ö÷²¥´óÐã would be good too!

  • Comment number 38.

Norrie, you're starting to sound like BB...

  • Comment number 39.

    Festive greetings GIO bloggers!

Like others I will start by thanking Norrie for his great list - I hope BB plays more than one song and I am happy to endorse it all.

My suggestions for tonight are: Love and happiness for you by Kimmie Rhodes, for all family and fiends and in particular my better half, Jane, my sons Mark and Matthew and my brother, Jim. The lyrics make it perfect for the theme.

If that doesn't make the cut, three options which Jane would appreciate are:
    - I fall to pieces by Trisha Yearwood and Aaaron Neville
    - I'll work for your love - Springsteen
    - Until the night - Billy Joel.

#10. Norrie, great list and very flattered to get a mention.

I started listening to the show in the summer, and have really enjoyed listening to and reading everyone's suggestions, and being introduced to new tracks and artists, as well as making my own contributions.

I have really tried to think of something else, but the only track I have come up with so far for Bryan and the Ö÷²¥´óÐã team, Barbara, Mandi, Richard and Sam, and all the bloggers and contributors to the show is "Thank You For The Music" by Abba. I know that won't be a popular choice, so if anyone has a suggestion for a track that says the same but is more suitable for GIO, stick it on the blog.

  • Comment number 41.

    Monday

"Ship Song" Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds for the lovely missus
"My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock" for Ted, with much respeck
"The Golden Void" by Hawkwind, for everyone (me especially!)

    Merry Christmas, Getitonners.

    Tuesday

"Mr Henry" by Tom Waits. A lovely slurred version of a meander home, full of foolish regret, brought down to earth at the end by the reality of (what does not seem to be a good thing) home.

  • Comment number 44.

    Wednesday

Greg Lake "I Believe in Father Christmas". It's about the festive season, without being an overdrive party thing, it's got a caustic note, but the original verses and the bits borrowed from Prokofief or whoever give it a Christmassy gloss which entices in the unwary.

On the other hand, there's Mr Blobby.

  • Comment number 45.

Hi everybody, I hope you are well. Norrie, thanks very much for the song that is very lovely of you. The choplet has indeed arrived, a smashing wee boy who is doing great (as is Ms Chops).

It'll probably be the new year before I get back into any routine that will incorporate thinking about GIO. Meanwhile I hope that everyone on the board and Bryan and the GIO team have a great Christmas and marvellous 2009!

    Regards
    Mr Chops, the Dwarf

  • Comment number 46.

Congratulations Mr. Chops! Good to hear everyone is doing well. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  • Comment number 47.

Hope this isn't too late for Monday's show.Could you find time for Prefab Sprout's We Let the Stars Go-great lyrics, sweeping melodies, a really good example of songwriting as craft...a rare thing, methinks. As an alternative, if you can't find this, could you play Hang out the Stars in Indiana by Al Bowlly from the Withail and I sountrack, originally recorded in the 30s but definitely available on CD.This one's for my husband Geoffrey-with-a-G, who keeps me going ...

  • Comment number 48.

    thanks norrie-just read your list.
For you--Gypsy Rider by none other than Gene Clark.Cheers!

  • Comment number 49.

#44 - Harry - I was listening to Radio Clyde this afternoon and they played the Greg Lake song I Believe In Father Christmas which is basically a comment on the over-commercialisation of Christmas... And guess what? Near the end they cut it short to play some adverts! Irony or what!

  • Comment number 50.

    #10
Norrie - Just catching up and many thanks for the mention (good choice too) - Have a great Christmas.

Bryan, another suggestion for tonight - Turn Around by Nanci Griffiths for my daughters Katy and Roslyn. A reminder of how time flies!

  • Comment number 51.

I hope I haven't offended AdamInRio and EC in the North Sea with my suggestion of the Muppets theme tune. That pair have been rather quiet over the past few days.

I'm also surprised that neither have joined in with the excellent site at

In fact, there's a few notable names missing out the shouts!

I still think 'Santa's a Scotsman' has to be played on Wednesday night

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 52.

#51 - DC - yup, it's a great wee site with loads of cool tracks shared amongst the members. Recommended! Also saves us all from cluttering this blog up with of-topic stuff, which is good.

  • Comment number 53.

OK - here's an uplifting and entirely appropriate track I can dedicate to Bryan the 'Marathon Man' with pleasure. 'Run To You by Bryan Adams (double whammy as the spelling of Bryan is right!)

Get yer runnin bauchles on Bryan! :-)

Mon: If my first choice is unsuccessful, "Enjoy Yourself" by Prince Buster would do the trick too (again dedicated to the daughter (not that she needs much cajoling)- and all the GIO community come to think of it).

#10 Cheers Norrie, that's nice of you.

Good to hear 'We're Going to be Friends' by the White Stripes. Just a really sweet song. Liked Prince Buster, the PTA song and kd lang too. Thought I'd be well scunnered by 'Hallelujah' after hearing it in the shops but her version is nice and restrained. We just need to get that message across to all these Mariah wannabes...

#59 Adam, we had a kinda blog chat about the FM soundtrack album, with particular reference to Bob Seger, maybe I got that wrong I thought it was you who was saying that you loved that album but its going back a bit. I just picked my favourite artists of that album and then picked my favourite Seger song! Not really a connection just trying to pick something I thought you might like.

Saltspringsherri was even more oblique - she said they had loads of snow so Woman In Winter.

You could have at least dedicated "Maria" by Blondie for me ;-) Disappointed.....

Can I make a plea for no Chris Rea tonight?! Don't have anything against the man himself but as someone who listens to other radio stations during the day that song is being played to death this year...oh and harking back to my blog about Xmas tunes it also gives me massive traumatic flashbacks to working in music retail ;-)

    Sorry, moan over

BTW, massive thanks to BB and Babs for playing my request last night, it meant alot and was great to hear Sleep on the radio again.

    Maria :-)

You were worried that this weeks songs could be a bit down beat. So please play Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place (opening line 'Ö÷²¥´óÐã is where I want to be').

  • Comment number 83.

    Meaningful is it.

John Denver - Back Ö÷²¥´óÐã Again
    Simon & Garfunkel - Ö÷²¥´óÐãward Bound
Mark Knopfler - Going Ö÷²¥´óÐã - Theme from Local Hero)

    A bit 'Perkier' -
How about 'Sweet Ö÷²¥´óÐã Alabama' Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Loudon Wainwright III - When I'm at Your House

James Taylor - Baby It's Cold Outside.

Good Luck with the show folks, and glad Babs is back - we missed her brilliant laugh, it is so infectious you can't help smiling even when it's been a rubbish day.

    Cheers!

#66 I'd be impressed if Bryan got that surname first time. Mind you, he must have been to Hawai'i with Scottish Passport so he should know these things!

    Tues:
    'Slight Return' - The Bluetones
"I'm coming home, but just for a short time" - does exactly what it says on the tin!

'My Mate Paul' - David Holmes

'Three Little Pigs' - Green Jelly
A mate from my hometown used to do this at karaoke - both the high and low voices. It was a bit like a musical version of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movie!

    Wed:
'I'm Your Christmas Friend (Don't Be Hungry)' - James Brown
It'll be the second anniversary of his death on Christmas Day. I think we can safely they broke the mould...

Hope everyone has a good holiday.

    Tue...more:

"My Oklahoma Ö÷²¥´óÐã Has Blown Away" Bruce Springsteen.

"25 Miles (from Ö÷²¥´óÐã) - Edwin Starr - contains the iconic line "feet don't fail me now"...that'd raise the tempo a bit.

#75: Thanks, Jim, for requesting "Carolina In My Mind," and thanks to Bryan for playing it. As you might imagine, that song's always meant a lot to me. When I was living elsewhere for a few years, hearing that beautiful track always made me a bit teary-eyed.

#87 - Rich -No problem! That track was always going to be one of my suggestions for the theme tonight. That song and Taylor's version of You've Got A Friend both have the capacity to make me cry on the spot - such is the truthfulness of the lyrics and the simple, crystal clear delivery of a heartfelt message.

    Bryan,

I think Christmas songs should be done by people with a smooth tone to their voice. That's why stuff by Noddy Holder and Bruce Springsteen just doesn't work. How about the following:-

    Silver Bells - Jim Reeves
    Frosty the Snowman - Ronettes
    Christmas Day - Dido
    Viva la Vida - Coldplay

Yes, that last one might not seem obvious but with the biblical references, I reckon it has the right feel to be a Christmas classic in the same way as East 17's "stay another day".

    Happy Christmas,

    A few thoughts for tonight:

The river - Robert Downey Jnr
    Christmas Dream - Perry Como
Hark the herald angels sing - Jewel
Do you hear what I hear - Gladys Knight and the Pips
The Christmas Song or Away in a Manger - Trisha Yearwood
Santa Claus is coming to town - Springsteen

Best wishes to all - and in particular the GIO team

Bruce Springsteen - The Wish - great song about getting his guitar at Christmas and how it subsequently changed his and his familys lives.

Bruce Springsteen - Merry Christmas Baby

Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Darlene Love and the E Street Band - All Alone at Christmas

Wednesday: I've been trying to have "Sunset hymn" by Emily Smith played on GIO but to no avail...perhaps Bryan and Co will play her song "Winter Song" which is another very descriptive song and really puts a picture in your mind of the sights and sounds of Winter (including Christmas). Emily, the Scots Singer of the Year 2008, has a beautiful voice.
