An emotional Tuesday for me. No such thing as 'songs that were playing when your child was born' in my number one's case. Indeed, the thought of male presence in the labour ward had only just been passed by the midwyfies at Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy (kain?)

Anyway, the 38 hour labour which preceded the entrance to the world of number one son (I kid you not) was obviously a stressful time for Mrs C but she did well and the arrival of my wee boy was a fantastic experience.

A couple of hours later, I jumped into the car to drive home to tell the world about my wee boy and heard 'Alive and kicking' by Simple Minds come over the radio.

Emotional indeed! Alan is now in his fourth year at Dundee Uni Medical School and about to sit his exams. Please wish him aw the best

Yep happy fathers day all the proud dads.

My first wasn't as long a labour as DC's....just 24 hours but still way too long for any poor mum to have to go through. And Barry Manilow was the only tape she took in with her. We didn't have music for the second or third from what I remember but thankfully they were much quicker in making their appearance.

However I do remember playing the following on returning from the labour wards

Marie Elise was to be called Michaela but when I returned home in the early hours from the hospital I put on the Tv to find The Hit Man And Her with Pete Waterman and a screechin Michaela Strachan. Funny how you can go off a name. I was playin some tunes instead of which Marliese was one and thought that would be nice although the missus subsequently altered it to marie Elise.

So there we have it.

The trial and tribulation timekeepers have clocked DC at an eye-watering 38 hours but there must be someone out there sitting shyly on a super-40 score on the maternal mission monitor.

#18. At 37 hrs I think I'll be second in the 'how many hours' contest...although a consultant did tell me that labour actually can take umpteen (that's a technical term) days more. I was in hospital on a 'false alarm' a few days before and it would have been nice if The Daughter had made an appearance then - my Dad's Birthday - they would've loved to have shared the day (never mind though...she gets to share with Scotch Git instead). I didn't have a birth tape, listened to the radio instead so if there's any commentary from a British Lions rugby match from 26 June 1993...even through the haze of every drug they could put in me I do remember declaring my appreciation of Jeremy Guscott's legs. I don't know anyone who made a birth tape. The Daughter was already a fortnight late, it was a hot June and I was becoming very weary so I may have included The Kinks - 'Tired Of Waiting For You' in a tape had I made one.

Apparently when Mark Wirtz played 'Excerpt from a teenage opera' for the approval of EMI executives, they were horrified. The unanimous verdict was "Can the tape, kill the project."

Somehow John Peel, then with Radio Caroline, obtained a recording. When he aired the song, the response was immediate. People demanded to know who, where, why and how could they get their hands on a copy.
The rest is historical history.

EMI also turned down the opportunity to sign the Beatles. Go figure.

Can any of you techno guys out there tell me how long it should take to convert WMA files to the itune format. I'm doin about 15000 from my flash drive and so far it's got through 2000 in 14 hours...and slowing the old laptop up considerably. Is this normal? Should I book a holiday in the sun and come back in a fortnight and see if it's finished?

Paulo - yes it's normal, and does it on install. You can temporarily kill the process if you need to but I'd suggest just letting it chunter on until it's done. It's usually fast enough.

Ah, the mix tape for the birth. We had Springsteen, Ry Cooder, Ted Hawkins plus some soul. The wife was / is a queen fan (her musical taste is a standing joke amongst friends and family, queen is not even half of it) so I compromised and put some Roachford on as she liked 'Cuddly Toy'. So having trawled throguh the memory bank I suppse the highlights would be:

Jeez you guys are lucky.
I've got the hangover from hell this morning and I only had one pint last night. How did that happen. Maybe I should have gone to sleep at some point. And I've got to stay awake through two meetings today, one of which I'm hosting. Haven't felt like this since I spent 24 hours at a bedside 23 years ago not allowed to nod off. Even with an epidural in her back and doped up to the eyeballs in excruciating pain, she could still muster up enough energy to scream ''Don't Sleep'' if my head moved forward as much as half an inch.

#78 I increasingly finding that my alcohol consumption and hangover bear no relation to each other. At one point I had to consume copius quantities, and / or strange concotions to get a serious hangover. Now I can do it after pint, or a glass or two of wine. Strangely I still have days where after serious drinking I am fine. Thus I try and avoid drinking on school nights, thoguh even this doesn't work as now if I do get a hangover I can feel crap for two or three days.

Thursday - school's out! - My first taste of freedom was a work experience placement at a department store in Brisbane, Australia, 1975 just before I left school.
and the song which always takes me back to that 'Big new world' feeling of being out amongst it all - 'Ding a dong' Hollands Eurovision entry for that year ! Dont ask me why, but it must have got quite a bit of airplay in far flung Australia.

If I awaken after a richt guid bevvy feeling fine it's because I'm still drunk. The hangover gradually imposes itself during the course of the day. By early evening my options are extremely limited; i.e. go back to the pub or go home to bed.
